QUILTER OF DISTINCTION PRESENTATION Saturday, May 28 at 2 pm Canmore Opera House (#42) • 2022 Quilter of Distinction — Cheryl Arkison • Festival of Quilts welcomes Cheryl Arkison as the Quilter of Distinction for 2022! C heryl started as a young quilter of 23 and nothing can stop her now. She is a mother of three active kids, runs a business alongside her husband, and finds time to foster her creative spirit in quilting. In addition to her own creative works, she loves teaching, writing books, spreading the gospel of improv, and designing quilts. For over 18 years, Cheryl has had a great love affair with the Festival of Quilts and we have been fortunate enough to have her as a participant, teacher, volunteer and visitor for the Festival. In her words,“One day, I will make it onto the railing on the Wainwright Hotel. One day”. Over the past decade she has published three books: Sunday Morning Quilts (co-authored with Amanda Jean Nyberg), A Month of Sundays, and You Inspire Me to Quilt. It was the slab technique in Sunday Morning Quilts that inspired quilters around the world and locally to contribute blocks and quilts to make over 100 quilts in response to the 2013 floods here in Calgary, a project Cheryl coordinated. Since then, other guilds use this approach for charity quilts in their own communities. Cheryl has also travelled the world to teach quilting, both literally and virtually. Her goal as a teacher is to inspire a good attitude and spirit of adventure in quilting; to remember to play. In her words, “my goal as a quilter is to demonstrate those traits myself and have a lot of fun. After all, we are in it for the quilt making.” Cheryl has been an active and inspiring member of the local quilting community and her use of bold colour and quiet whispers of low volume fabrics will inspire those who come to Heritage Park to celebrate her as our Quilter of Distinction. We can’t wait to see what the next 23 years will bring. Heritage Park celebrates these qualities in our Quilter of Distinction • An outstanding quilter who has made significant contributions by volunteering, being an inspiration to others, and showing encouragement within the quilting community. • Is a resident of Calgary or the surrounding area. • Has a sufficient body of work available to showcase their talent. • Has work to show progression or growth in quality. Do you know someone who should be celebrated? Please let us know. Submissions will be accepted at Canmore Opera House (#42) throughout the Festival or kindly email your nomination to quilts@heritagepark.ca Heritage Park Historical Village Festival of Quilts 2022
