GET TO KNOW YOUR NEIGHBOR VIRGINIA BROWN Meet the May 2019 Resident of the Month, Virginia Brown. Virginia was born on January 19, 1925 in Wamac, Illinois. She was number 8 of 9 children born to Albert and Edith Bronson, 8 girls and 1 boy. Her dad was a carpenter in the coal mines and her mom was an awesome homemaker. Of the nine children, two live in Spring Arbor and on lives in Arkansas. Virginia’s sister Ella is 92 and recently moved here to SAAL and her other sister Viola will be 99 in May. Virginia graduated early because she was able to pass from kindergarten to the second grade. After graduation, Virginia worked for two years in the office at a candy factory. Two days a week, the workers received a yummy and warm candy bar. Some of those candy bars are still made today. She then moved to Hillsdale, Michigan, where she started painting for Munn Art Studio. She was an excellent artist, working nearly 40 years for this small company that sent scene-o-felts to missionaries and pastors all over the world, teaching the love of God. She and several other ladies worked there, living together in what was called the “Bee Hive”. Their pastor, Verdon Dunckel, had named it that, saying that there were “Honeys” living there. On April 4, 1946, Don Brown captured one of the bees and they were married. Don was a letter carrier for over 30 years, known as “the whistler”. They became life-long members of the Free Methodist Church in Hillsdale. Don and Virginia had three children, Keith, Karen and MAY Featured Resident of the Kathy, who all live in Michigan. They did have one Month more special “child”, Kandi, who “dogged” her way into Virginia Brown their lives. Don and Virginia were married 68 years. They enjoyed traveling to most of the states, including a trip to Hawaii for their 25th anniversary. They also enjoyed several winters in Florida. Virginia has looked forward to her sister Ella’s move to Spring Arbor Assisted Living. Now that she is here, watch out, these two ladies will be taking laps around the building.
