Welcome to your maths challenge ‘Bedroom bonanza”. The brief: As part of this challenge, you will have the opportunity to design your perfect bedroom. To do this, you need to decide on your products, budget accurately and complete the design to fit your room space. Your budget is £500 and your floor plan size is 1 piece of A4 paper. This is obviously not the actual size of the room, but the true scale is 1cm = 1mm. For example, 30cm width real measurement = 3cm width on the floor plan. You do not have to print this booklet, but you can if you wish. All of the details you need to create your plans can be viewed on this document through a laptop or tablet. All you need are a few pieces of paper to create your plans! In this booklet, you will find: - The ‘Mathematical Furniture Inc.’ catalogue, where you can choose the products you’d like in your room and see their prices and dimensions (sizes). - A budgeting sheet, where you will choose your products and calculate your total cost. - A floor plan, where you will need to decide where everything will go and ensure that your furniture will fit in your room. 3

Budgeting Task Below is an example of how you may wish to set out your budget plan. You can use this sheet if you have a printed copy, or draw the table yourself if you are viewing this on a computer or tablet. Remember you only have £500 to spend, so choose carefully and calculate your spending accurately! WHEN YOU ARE CALCULATING, PLACE VALUE IS VERY IMPORTANT! Remember we are calculating with money, so there is a decimal point!! Eg. £39.99 + £12.99 = £53.98 3 9 9 9 1 2 9 9 5 3 9 8 1 1 1 14

CHALLENGE! Floor Plan This is a basic plan of your room. The door is in the corner, it is 1m wide and needs to be able to be opened. The window is on the back wall. You must position your items in your room but make sure they all fit in! Using a true scale of 1cm to 1mm and the dimensions in your catalogue, plan out the positions of your new bedroom! For example, 30cm width real measurement = 3cm width on the floor plan. You can use this page if you have printed it, or a page of normal A4 paper as your whole room if you are viewing this on a computer or tablet. 16
Extra Activities Well done, you have successfully designed your brand-new bedroom! Here are some extra activities to consider now you have finished. 1. Oh no! Your brand-new bed has broken! You have to pick a new bed frame from the catalogue. How does this affect your total cost? 2. The desk you ordered is out of stock! You can order a different one for 50% off. How much does your new desk cost? 3. Your dance mat needs new batteries! The dance mat originally cost £99. £9 of that is the cost of the batteries. There are 3 batteries in total. How much does 1 battery cost? 4. It’s your lucky day!!! Mathematical Furniture Inc have offered you 25% off everything on your next order! You have £150 more to spend. What would you like and how much is it going to cost you with this offer? (Remember that 50% off is half price so 25% off is a quarter of the price off / taken away!) 5. What is the perimeter of your bed? (perimeter means the length all the way around it – Remember it is shaped like a rectangle so it will have 4 sides!) 17
