1. About the Production
     Matilda is adapted from the British children’s book of the same name. The original
book is written by the prominent children’s book writer, playwright and novelist Roald
Dahl. Famous movies such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Fantastic Mr. Fox, The BFG
are all adapted from his works.
     It was the renowned Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) that adapted this exciting
story to a musical. RSC is one of the most influential theatre company in the UK, which
has a largest scale and highest performance quality. Matilda has been a success since
its opening in 2011 at the West End, London. It won 7 Oliver Awards (the top theatre
award in the UK) and 5 Tony Awards (American theatre award). The Sunday Times
described Matilda as “easily the standout musical of the decade”.
     Matilda the musical features children actors, and their skilled performance and
excellent techniques amazed all audience. In fact, acting as Matilda also brought the young
actresses huge honors: all 4 children actresses of the 2021 West End production won
the Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical, and the 4 children actresses of the
2013 Broadway production won the Tony Award for Best Performance.
     In 2019, Seven Ages Musical produced Matilda (English touring version) in China.
We toured 13 cities, presented 140 performances, and welcomed more than 190,000
audiences. In 2021, Matilda (Chinese version) will be Seven Ages Musical’s annual major
production to be produced and performed. This Chinese Matilda will be the well-known
work’s second top standardized non-English production. Seven Ages will collaborate with
the Royal Shakespeare Company and the GWB Entertainment to produce this production
with foreign creative members directing in person and a full Chinese production team of
director, choreographer, music director and other production staffs. Children Actors will
go through several rounds of auditions before getting one on one instructions from
the foreign and Chinese production team. Their language, speech, singing,
dancing and even gymnastics skills will be trained comprehensively through
intensive rehearsals. Finally, they will perform this production on the first-class
theaters in China.

2. Children Characters Descriptions and Requirements
  1) Matilda (young girl)
     Height Requirement: 100-140cm
     Age Requirement: 8-12 years old

     Matilda is a complicated and extremely smart child. Her parents bully her, and
     she escapes into books and her imagination. She doesn’t comply and is full of
     wild energy.
     We need confident young girls who are skilled in singing and have strong text
     comprehension skill, and can bring natural and truthful performance.

  2) Bruce (young boy)
     Height Requirement: 100-150cm
     Age Requirement: 8-13 years old

     Bruce is Matilda’s classmate, a boy who loves eating.

We need young actors who haven’t experienced their voice change and have
       board range and strong voice; skilled in popular song singing and comedy
       acting, and can control their body movements well to perform dances.

   3) Eric (young boy)
      Height Requirement: below 120cm
      Age Requirement: 7-10 years old

       Eric is the smallest child in Matilda’s class and is bullied by Miss Trunchbull the
       most.
       We need cute young actors who haven’t experienced their voice change, and
       is skilled in singing; can control their body movements well to perform
       dances.

3. Production timeline
Rehearsal: September – December 2021
Performance: December 2021 – August 2022

Children actors need to attend the all rehearsals, and need to guarantee enough
performance attendance, premised that the actors’ heights and voice conditions fulfill
the requirements.

4. Application Information
  Due to international pandemic control, the audition will have two phases, the first
  phase is Video Audition, and the second phase is In Person Audition. The creative
  team from UK will participate throughout the whole process.
