Ventura Community Cat Project – March 2021 March is Pet Poison Awareness and Prevention Month! About one- fifth of all phone calls to the ASPCA’s Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) involve pets who’ve accidently swallowed human medications. 1. Over-the-counter medications: 19.6% This includes vitamins, OTC pain medications (acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and naproxen), herbal supplements, antihistamines, and cold and flu medications. 2. Human prescriptions: 17.5% Ingestion of medications prescribed for people include attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder medications, antidepressants, and heart medications make up a significant amount of these cases. 3. Food: 11.4% Food is number three at 24,469 cases. Xylitol, grapes, raisins, onions, and garlic make up most of these cases. 4. Chocolate: 10.1% Chocolate moved up a spot from 2017 with 21,635 of APCC cases—working out to almost 60 cases a day. The popularity of chocolate gifts for occasions like Christmas, Valentine’s Day, and Easter adds to the danger. 5. Veterinary products: 9.3% Flavored medications and misread labels are a big reason pets run into trouble with veterinary products. If you have a pet that you think has ingested a poison you can call the ASPCA’s hotline at (888) 426-4435. For information on affordable spay/neuter services please go to the website at www.letssnipit.org or call 203-253- 1934. Ventura Community Cats are FREE! The Sunshine Ladies By Linda Dolan Just three weeks short of a full year off, the Sunshine Club has resumed meeting. 34 members were delighted to gather on Wednesday morning to see friends and exchange stories. Baby blankets and hats and quilts were turned in, signifying what many had been doing to keep busy. Finger foods were provided by members that Norma Poutre had contacted, gloves were provided and used to pick up items to eat with coffee or tea. Norma arranged the refreshment list for the next several weeks. There is a copy on the bulletin board in the library. Several members got together in late November to carry out the Christmas Card project that we started last year. I received several cards in return from former members and read the messages to the group. Marie Noble brought in a sheet with three potential covers for the audio book that her husband Bob is producing and the list was passed around for each member to vote on the one they liked best. We are still collecting food and/or money for the Ventura Elementary School Food Pantry. Canned goods, cereal etc. can be brought to Wednesday Meetings or dropped off at the Ad Building. Boxes for donations are inside the main door. Bev Meer played piano before the meeting and played a patriotic song during the meeting with members being reminded not to sing as that is considered a major germ spreader. When asked, everyone present indicated they had received at least one shot, many had received both. All agreed that the Convention Center is doing an excellent job of administering the vaccinations. Very smooth, moving traffic quickly without having to get out of the car. Hopefully the government will be able to increase production, enabling all who want to be vaccinated and finally getting some control over this disease. We discussed the improbability of holding our Flea Market as social distancing and crowd control would be impossible. We are hoping that the neighborhood yard sale will be held and discussed how to make the addresses of participants available to shoppers. The Bunko Game is resuming on Friday afternoons at 2 in the library. Anyone who is interested is invited to play. We had 2 new residents in attendance and they were warmly welcomed. The book club is meeting again, the third Thursday of the month in the Nineteenth Hole. The book for March is It’s in my Genes, written by a former Student of mine, Kathy Gillcrist. Adopted into a loving family at birth, she never tried to find out about her birth parents until after she retired from teaching. The book explores why she decided to investigate, how she went about the search and the surprise information she discovered. The book is available on Amazon and is free for Kindle or the Kindle App. If you haven’t been vaccinated, seriously consider getting the shots, remember it is still important to wear a mask, maintain social distancing and keep washing your hands. Things will slowly get better and we will talk again next month.
