This itinerary takes you to the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, in South West France. Nouvelle-Aquitaine is the largest region in France. It is as diverse as it is surprising, with nature, the great outdoors, vibrant cities and legendary beaches. So, no matter what type of holidays you’re looking for, there’s bound to be a destination for you. Nouvelle-Aquitaine brings to mind famous places, like Bordeaux and La Cité du Vin (1 million visitors in 2 years), Lascaux (which attracted more than 500,000 visitors in its very first year after opening) and the Dordogne Valley, Biarritz and the Basque Country, Poitiers and Futuroscope (where visitor numbers grew by 6%), Cognac, Pau and the Pyrenees, or Limoges and its skilled craftsmanship. But there are also 750 kms of fine sandy coastline, with ports from Bayonne to La Rochelle, the 110-metre-high Dune du Pilat and islands like Ile de Ré and Ile d’Oléron. It is increasingly easy to get to Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Bordeaux is just 2 hours from Paris by high-speed rail link (LGV), Biarritz, 3 hours 55 min, Futuroscope, 1 hours 40 min and La Rochelle just 2 hours 25 min. Thursday 14th March 2019 WELCOME TO BORDEAUX! Come and discover Bordeaux, the place to be, a world heritage site! Visitors like to dive into the past, to walk along the quaysides fitted out with flowers in border of the Garonne River, admiring 18th-century architecture elegant stone buildings. Friday 15th March 2019 PERIGUEUX Périgueux : City of art and history, the capital of Perigord has one of the largest protected areas of France. The former Gallo-Roman city "Vésunna" on medieval-Renaissance city, not forgetting the large ensembles of 18th and 19th centuries, it offers no less than 2000 years of history. The cathedral Saint Front is a listed Jacobean religious monument in the world heritage of UNESCO. The city of Périgueux is also greedy. The market for local producers is held daily near the town hall. Wednesday and Saturday are also reserved to the general market that takes place on the fairways of Aquitaine and around the cathedral Saint Front. Vegetables and fruit, flower gardens and poultry and, in season, porcini mushrooms, truffles and walnuts. From November to March are held, St. Louis, markets in fat (they stock geese and duck in all its forms, including fresh foie grass it is prudent to carry in a cooler bag and cook following). Pleasant also a walk or bike on cycle paths along the banks of the Isle, the quiet river that runs. Am : Discover the Cité du Vin, a temple dedicated to wine troughout the world, that has opened in 2016 along the Garonne River, and a must see site in Bordeaux PM : Am Transfer to Périgueux in the Dordogne region, 1h30 drive from Bordeaux. Saturday 16th March 2019 SARLAT & DORDOGNE VALLEY Listed by UNESCO, the Dordogne Valley is one of the world’s largest biosphere reserves. Its unique landscapes with dizzying cliffs dotted with superb castles, prehistoric caves, picturesque listed villages and remarkable gardens, make it an exceptional destination. Located not far from the Vézère Valley, a visit to the new Lascaux centre takes visitors on a journey 18,000 years back in time to meet history’s first artists. Finally, don’t miss Sarlat to steep yourself in the local atmosphere. The capital of the Black Perigord, this medieval city has been awarded the “art and history” label and possesses no less than 66 listed monuments. Both pretty and picturesque, it stands out for its architecture, a real testimony to the evolution of the heritage of the 14th to 18th centuries. Just like in the Middle Ages, the streets of the city transform during market days, hosting a palette of colours, smells and flavours that contrast with the ochre of the ancient stone. The stalls overflow with local produce: strawberries, porcini mushrooms, foie gras and above all, the famous Perigord truffle that will delight the taste buds of any gourmet. A real treat! Am : Enjoy the morining to discover the charming villages and medieval castles along the Dordogne River. PM : Transfer to the beautiful city of Sarlat and enjoy some time strolling in the city center on a Saturday afternoon. Am Dinner and night in the Dordogne (Hotel to be confirmed)
Sunday 17th March 2019 DORDOGNE VALLEY Lascaux IV: buit next to the original cave, Lascaux IV offers an even more immersive experience. It opened to the public in 2016 with a visit of the entire cave, the clever recreation of a cave-like ambiance , scenography and 3D films. Brive la Gaillarde : In the same region, Brive la Gaillarde, the gateway to the Valley with Brive/Vallée de la Dordogne airport, is well worth a visit. It is no doubt named “la gaillarde” for two reasons: both attractive and valiant, it was a fortified town in the Middle Ages. Stroll along its streets lined with mansions and discover the Georges Brassens market hall which hosts the “fat fairs” and Brive’s famous Book Fair, not to mention a visit to the Colette Garden, created in the image of the unique author who so splendidly described plants and flowers. Am : In the morning, you will visit of the new Lascaux and discover the Vézère Valley, classified by the UNESCO for the concentration of prehistorical sites found there PM : Spend the afternoon in Brive la Gaillarde and surroundings Farewell Dinner and night in Brive
