JUNIOR SAILING DIRECTOR Jesse Andrews The month started out with a fun Opening Day and Chili Cookoff at KYC. The Junior sailors did something new this year and had a pursuit race around Coconut island in Bics, Lasers and 29ers. My starting time calculations may have not factored in the strong North winds but none the less the Juniors had a fun, fast reach around Coconut island! The Bics had a 15 minute head start and held on to their lead for the overall win after planing to the North side of Coconut and then tight reaching back to KYC. The lone Laser enjoyed similar conditions only having to tack once. The 29ers had the most tactical race with all boats deciding to round clockwise. They couldn't resist the fast reaching spinnaker run from high of the North Channel to not quite laying the South end of Coconut. Kawika Tumilowicz Instructor Mike Pacholski and his class with Reverend Galindo and Matt Grimsley made it the highest with their kite up and rounded the bottom at the annual Boat Blessing. Photo: Ken Case of Coconut first. Malia Johnson and Zach Severson were hot on their tails followed by Mani Pahuatini and JP Lattanzi. Things got shuffled when the boats got in the lee of Coconut and had to tack up the backside of the island. At the finish it was very close with some boats again going high to hoist their spinnakers to come in the South Channel and others taking the short cut in the North Channel. Mani and JP ended up with the victory in the 29er class. The overall Junior win for the Cowan Shield race went to Makani Andrews Sailing a Bic. The following weekend KYC hosted HLA Laser event #2 in 15-25 knot winds. It was so windy that even John Myrdal took a smaller radial sail! It turned out to be the correct decision as he won all 5 races. Zach Severson's consistency payed off and he took the B Division win. After the last race a 35 knot squall came in and most Lasers blazed into the yacht club. One boat had to be rescued after the sailor was separated from her boat. Thanks to all the volunteers who helped with the regatta and helping retrieve the boat and sailor safely in the end of the event! Our next Junior race is HYSA #1 Saturday, March 2 at Rainbow Bay Marina. There is a new HYSA website that you can check out at hysasail.com thanks to Lisa Yasuda! DECKHANDS Margaret Peebles President The Deckhands are sad to announce the passing of one of our emeritus members. Dee Andrews was a long time member of the Kaneohe Yacht Club. She joined the Deckhands in early 2000. Dee was the Parliamentarian during her time on the board. She became an Emeritus member in January of 2015. She was fondly called the Grand Dame, as she was the matriarch of the Deckhands. Dee was the mother of seven children and lost her husband Frank in 1996. Dee had a wonderful life as a mother, wife, Wave in the Navy and a TWA flight attendant. She was an avid bridge player and loved to travel, especially with her children. Dee had many grandchildren and great, great grandchildren. She spent the last years of her life living in California being cared for by her family, where she passed away. She will always be remembered for her gracious, kind and thoughtful ways. She never had a bad word for anyone and always had a Dee Andrews smile on her face. She will be missed. Reported by: Wendy Jackson The Deckhands love a great party, and would like to congratulate Vice Commodore Mike and Rear Commodore Pete for the great job putting together such a FUN Opening Day celebration! We would also like to thank all of the members who tasted our chili and voted it their favorite! We WERE going to share the recipe, but decided to make some "tweaks" and look forward to hopefully a repeat for Opening Day 2020! We faced serious competition who know their way around a chili contest! Thanks to the topping expertise by Bobbi Youngblood and Sime Gross. Sherri Phillips was our secret weapon serving up the tastes and sharing the most amazing cornbread. And finally, Rennie Faith and Wendy Jackson were the "Chefs". One hint we will share - some heat, but NOT too much..... Bingo was held in the longhouse on Wednesday, February 20. What an incredible turnout! 60 members and friends brought pupus to share and played 6 rounds of Bingo. There were some BIG winners, with Blackout being won by Richard Hansen, congratulations to him. We had a double Thanks Mike and Pete for organizing Opening Day! winner by a new member to the club. Kathy Joy and her husband Chuck came late and missed a few of the first games. Somehow, she still managed to win twice. Huge Mahalos to Laura Kelley and Barbra Green for all the planning, for the night’s fun. Lani Brandt was an amazing announcer and thanks to all the Deckhands who served beverages and took care of all the participants. The feedback is already great and everyone would like to play Bingo again soon. The locker has a new Point of Sale system thanks to Sime Gross. Thank you to her and her team for getting the new system up and running so fast. Deckhand of the month for March: Becky Dodini You receive 25% off a purchase of up to $100.00. Congratulations! TENNIS FLEET Donlei Darnell When we think of a Valentine’s Dinner a vision of candle light, soft music and roses comes to mind…. Well!!! The Tennis Fleet didn’t quite find that waiting at the Long House on February 9 for the Valentine Potluck. The tables were very pretty, due to the decorating of Diane Minsky and Terry Beuret, and music was playing but we also found wind, rain and very cold temperatures….Brr. Jackets and coats were the dress of the day and I heard orders of Hot Toddies and other warm drinks. The theme was warm loving recipes and we had some wonderful chili, lasagna, meatloaf, other side dishes and desserts made up the many offerings from the heart. I’ve heard it said time and again that the fleet should put out a cookbook highlighting the wonderful special dishes we share at our potlucks. Winners for the tournament earlier in the day were MEN 1st Place – Greg Siok; 2nd Place – Kit Beuret and Wayne Jackson; and 3rd Place – John Gross. WOMEN 1st Place - Susie Jannuzzi; 2nd Place - Liz Meierdiercks; and 3rd Place - Sime Gross Other players were Steve Brooks, Jean Fernie, Pam Isayama, Harvey Minsky, Lynn Pease, Aaron Phillips and Fran Tannen. Thanks to June Williams for the potluck coordination and Wayne Jackson and Greg Siok for tournament event. Watch for notices about our March event to be held on Saturday, March 16. We welcomed new fleet members Kathy and Chuck Joy and look forward to Kathy playing in future tournaments. Crazy Day on the Bay!!! T by Andy Johnson he first day of the year for the IRF fleet showed us all a little bit of everything. We went from 20 plus knots before the start of the first race to barely 10 knots at the start of the second race to 20 plus knots in the third race. We had 11 boats on the line with fairly shifty conditions making things quite challenging for our race committee. Out of practice? Who’s to say, but we had boats Photos: Ken Fitzgerald Case IRF A1 2/17/2019 wiping out left and right throughout the day and the third race was a regular demolition derby. Mike Rothwell on Kava nearly went over the side and was saved by catching the lifeline with his face. Jesse Andrews on Papio had a pretty substantial gash on his shin. Victor Lozano made it back to KYC minus a backstay. All in all everyone had a story or two to tell and once again the crew of Crusader proved they are the ones to beat. The 2018 Seasons' Points Champs picked up right where they left off and won the day. The races for the day were won by three different boats, Cash Flow, Crusader and Restraining Order. The top five included Crusader, Pursuit, Cash Flow, Papio and Restraining Order. Good fun had by all and a big thanks to our Race Committee, Tim Roy, Jeff and Katie Cruise on the Float Boat and Ken Fitzgerald Case, as usual, documenting every wipeout. Thistle Racing Photo: KYC Archives on Kaneohe Bay By Glenn Clark My wife Dulcie and I joined the club in 1958. We purchased a wooden Thistle #1407 and entered the last race of the season. It was a mass start with ten or eleven boats on the line. MPs, Lightnings and Thistles. Here is an account of that day over 60 years ago. The first race did not go well for me. I got too close to the Race Committee boat and a medium wave put me on the stern rail causing a race official to fall out of his chair. I said “I guess I’m out of it!” The person who fell told me,"No, we've got two more races, stick around you can use the practice!" We waited. A couple of boats went by the RC boat and told them they were going in. An ill omen; the wind and waves had each increased. We managed a fair start and plowed the boat forward in the spray. Then we heard some loud voices - asking for right of way, incoherent replies and a terrible crash, unkind words; most unfit to print. An out of control MP had t-boned a brand new Lippincott Lightning bow first and stove a 12 inch hole in the starboard side. They each headed for the club. It was the Lightning’s inaugural race. Halfway down the course a couple more boats went home. We were soaked and had to bail a little. On the home run to the finish line we had a lot of water in the boat and were chilled. Some more boats headed for the club. Just when we were hoping for cancellation RC announced this was the last race. With most of the boats gone - we made a good start and plowed up to “A” mark, bailing often on the downwind leg and nearly swamping. It was quite a day. As I remember this, I feel a chill. They had a presentation by the piano bar and awarded us First Place. A mug. It would be almost two years before I could win again. The gentleman in the RC boat and trophy presenter was Harry Uhler, a Star boat skipper and nice guy. The Lightning owner whose boat was damaged was Cy Gillette.
