Two key areas in Girl Guides is the development of self—learning GRASSROOTS GUIDING new skills and taking on challenges—and service to the community in which they live. The girls of Mount Colah Aurora Guides, a Senior Guide Unit, have taken on a novel project which meets those areas of Guiding. They have built and set up a street library near the Guide Hall at Pierre Close, Mount Colah. Building the street library was a service project which took two terms to finish. In the process the girls learnt new skills including planning, designing, and using power tools. The girls learnt about different libraries and were instrumental in the decoration of the library, choosing a design that reflected the area in which they live. The Guides will monitor and maintain the library as an ongoing responsibility. Street libraries are a beautiful home for books, planted in your front yard. They are accessible from the street, and are an invitation to share the joys of reading with your neighbours. — streetlibrary.org.au They work on an honour system where people choose books to borrow and return, or add another book for others to read. There is no checking in or out but it is a good way for books to get read over and over and not sit on a shelf gathering dust. The Guides and their Leaders thank the Friends of Mount Colah for their support as well as Paul Hiscock from Just Call Paul for his advice and skill during the project. try Girl Guide PBoyeO.C. 2018 —Lismore Senior Guid e Ashes Proud Badges.
