Steelhead Survey Opportunity – Work with CA DFW!
California Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Yuba River Management Team
are conducting a survey to count steelhead redds (spawning beds) on the Lower
Yuba River. They need volunteers! This survey is imperative for future management
decisions for steelhead that are going to take place on the Yuba River. If you are
interested in volunteering, please email Duane Massa: SMassa@psmfc.org. As a
volunteer you will be trained by agency biologists to properly identify steelhead redds
and called out on specific dates to conduct the survey. Thank you for being a part of
this important project!

SPAWNERS Earth Day Clean-up
Another work party opportunity is on Earth Day (April 23) with the SPAWNERS group
that we worked with in October last year. They are a great group working on the San
Pablo creek in El Sobrante. This is the same day as our fishing trip to the lower Yuba,
but if you aren’t fishing, you can beautify our local creek with SPAWNERS!
The event is Saturday, April 23 from 9:30am-noon at the El Sobrante Library; lunch is
provided.
No sign up is needed, just show up to work. Drop an email to Eric Larson -
ericlarson87@gmail.com if you have any questions.

Mia Sheppard and Whitney Gould use Spey casting skills
To raise money for Casting for Recovery

Spey-O-Rama--a distance casting competition with a 15 foot, double handed rod and long
belly line-- is right around the corner. It will be held April 22-24, 2016 in San Francisco.

During the competition, Mia Sheppard and Whitney Gould, both past winners of the women’s
division, are teaming up to raise money for a wonderful cause-- Casting for Recovery-- an
organization also supported by GPFF.

Here’s how it works. You determine what you think Mia and for Whitney’s longest cast will
be, add them together, and then make a pledge based on that combined total footage. For
example, if both Whitney and Mia have a longest cast of 130 feet (total =260 feet) and you
donate $1.00/foot then you will donate $260.00 to CFR. Donations raised will be split 50/50
between Northern CA and Northern Oregon CFRs.

The person that comes closest to guessing the combined distance of Whitney and Mia’s
longest cast, will receive a guided trip with Little Creek Outfitters in Oregon. The person who
comes the next closest, will receive a two hour casting instruction from Whitney Gould. Flat
donation amounts are also accepted. Click on this link to make a donation:   https://form.
jotform.com/10195517743 .

Everyone making a donation above $25 will also be entered in a raffle to win products from
Simms Fishing, Echo Fly Rods and Nautilus Reels.

Feather River

Rich Miller on the backside of the
     island in the wildlife area.

Rich Miller and Christopher Miller(not related) joined me on this trip to the lower
Feather River. I had scouted the river the previous week with new club member Todd
Pond and found that most of adult steelhead had gathered just below the hatchery
above highway 70. Only a few straglers seemed to be still in wildlife area, so we began
this club trip across from the hatchery in downtown Oroville CA.

At 8AM we were greeted by a throng of other anglers slamming their truck doors and
rushing to claim a spot. There was not much room to move around in the river, but all
anglers were very cordial. Chris had a minor run-in with adult steelhead that shook off
quicky and Rich landed an enormous sucker fish to his amazement! The water was
only slighty off color from the rain. No steelhead were brought to net though. After
lunch we decided to go down to the wildlife area were there would be no sight of any
other anglers. Still no adults were brought to net, but we had much fun releasing many
young smolts and getting to know the river. It was great to meet Chris Miller, a long
time club member whom I had never met before.

Rogue River

Rogue River at Elk Picnic Hole.
           Photos by Ed Beggs.
Our Rogue River Steelhead trip went for five days. Got an early start, and we were
able to drop into the Ashland Fly Shop in Oregon and get some info. Info was: river
getting into shape and steelhead are on the move. Moving where was our primary
concern. The desk-man there at Ashland Fly Shop said “everywhere” but some places
are better than others. These places were noted on our Stream Time river access
map. As it turned out we went everywhere and numerous locations. First stop was
below Dodge Bridge along Agate Road there is a secret place, and we went there. Got
to swinging our intruder flies at 3 PM, till dark. Water was a bit fast there. No grabs.
We stayed the night at Shady Cove. Next day went to Tou Velle State Park for the
morning. No steelhead grabs, but I snagged a sucker fish. We moved on up the river
to our next stop, Dodge Bridge. Wading was difficult there so we moved up river to
Taskelma County Park. Not good there either for swinging. Water was just too high.
Moved up to Casey State Park below the Lost Creek Lake dam and found good water
but no willing steelhead.

It was decided after our first night in Shady Cove to move our lodging location to
Grants Pass. The following days we fished below Grants Pass and fished and scouted
many of the river access markings on the map and hit evey location pointed out to us
by the Ashland Fly Shop. We went as far down river as Carpenter Island but again
way too fast for safe fishing. We did find fishable places on the way back up to Grants
Pass, where at Upper Ferry Hole Rich Miller caught two fifteen-inch rainbows in the
same place with the same fly (black leach) within forty minutes. Following that, we
were scouting places for future fishing because the water was just too high. Our
resolve was to get back up river and fish Casey State Park where the waters are lower
and slower. Still no grabs there at Casey. Final day gave us half a day of fishing back
at Tou Velle State Park that offered a variety of conditions, but no grabs.

In summary, the Rogue was shaping up, but rain in the mountains sent down a pulse
of water that began to push the river up again just after we arrived. Lots of swinging
big flys with sink tips at various depths. Water temperate was a consistent 46 degrees
F. River flows went from 2,500 cfs on Feb 15th to 3,700 cfs on Feb 19th at the Dodge
Bridge station. So with all this, between Rich and me, we got two fifteen-inch rainbows
and a snagged sucker fish. We had a great time and learned a lot for out next
adventure up there on the Rogue. Stay away from rising water.

Every time I see photos of the San Francisco Marathon, it reminds
me of an analogy I first heard a decade ago, concerning trout survival
after having been landed on a fly rod: When you land a fish that
has fought valiantly and then hoist it out of the water to take a
few photos, it’s the same as someone holding your head
underwater for a minute after you have just run a marathon.
          Food for thought.

As Lee Wulff wrote in 1938, “A good game-fish is too valuable to be
caught only once.” Scientific studies have shown that, on average,

you will tend to “baby” the fish as you fight them. Most people
don’t know how much pressure they actually can safely apply to a
fighting fish, so the tendency is to take too long. Keep your rod tip up
and bent while playing a fish, and the leader will very rarely break. If
the fish runs right, pull left, and vice versa. The longer you take to
land a fish, the less likely it is to survive, following release.

Sierra Trout Camp Open for Enrollment!
  Hello Trout Unlimited Members,

We are excited to officially open enrollment for Trout Unlimited’s Sierra Trout Camp for kids ages 9-12! This camp will take place June 18th and
19th from 9 am-5 pm at the trout ponds at the Resort and Squaw Creek and Sawmill Lake in Truckee, CA thanks to Matt Heron Fly Fishing and
Tahoe Fly Fishing Outfitters. The camp costs $150 per person. This fly fishing camp will teach the campers to go from novices to pros within two
days! Some of the skills that the campers will gain include: fly casting, fly tying, hooking and landing fish, reading water, aquatic insect
identification, knot tying, and much more!

Unlike previous camps, this will not be an overnight camp. Replacing this is two days that the campers can fish on private water that is filled with
  trout!

If you are interested in signing your child up, or know someone that would be interested in sending their kid to camp, please contact Sam Sedillo:
ssedillo@tu.org, (408) 718 9897. He will send you further information and an application for the camp.

Thank you for your interest and we can’t wait to see your child participate in the camp!
