COMPANY BACKGROUND Who we are what we do Business Women Scotland is a membership platform providing business advice to women. BWS was founded by Lynne Kennedy MBE 13 years ago. She based BWS on her own struggles with mindset, limiting beliefs and loneliness in 10,000 business. Business Women Scotland has built one of the largest membership networks to provide expert advice to women. Through its BWS Members’ Club, ambitious businesswomen ONLINE READERS can gain access to exclusive expert support, training and INTERESTED IN mentoring to turn their idea into reality. BUSINESS BWS started in 2009 during the first financial crisis when there 9 was no support for women in business. Many women had great ideas for businesses but didn’t know how to go about turning those ideas into reality. Others had been made redundant and were looking for opportunities to go into business for themselves but felt they had nowhere to turn to for help and advice or to meet other women in a similar position. Faced with these questions and many other challenges, Lynne launched Business Women Scotland magazine, offering advice and information to women in a similar situation. Lynne ISSUES PER YEAR brought in experts in their field to provide editorial content in each issue. These experts discussed a variety of topics to help women in business, from finance to legal and HR issues, while a lifestyle section covered everything from wellbeing to family advice. The next step was hosting business events – the live event. The concept took the editorial features from the magazine and brought them to life in a venue where women could meet and HYPER LINKS hear from experts. We discussed burning issues from gaining confidence to finding finance, and invited business owners to discuss how they succeeded in business personally and professionally. ON ALL EDITORIALS The first event was in a Glasgow city centre hotel with 40 exhibitors and 250 guests – it was evident there was demand for more. BWS readership grew, big businesses and Government-backed groups started to take notice. BWS constantly looked at what additional support was required to improve the support BWS offers women in business. Statistics indicated that women connect and work better when they have built a working relationship on trust, so further BWS events were created to meet this need. In 2013 the first BWS awards launched, recognising women in business for the contributions they made and showcasing their expertise as role models for future generations. Since then, we have hosted many network events, business roadshows and online events to help support women in business. Now in 2022 BWS is a membership platform supporting women at all stages in business.
STAFF BIOGS LYNNE KENNEDY BWS FOUNDER An interior design graduate with a background in publishing, Lynne Kennedy MBE is the founder of Business Women Scotland. Lynne started her career in television, spending four years with the BBC and STV as a set designer, before changing direction and joining the world of publishing. She was part of the team that set up the acclaimed Homes & Interiors Scotland magazine and went on to run her own publishing business and launched many titles, from the luxurious Skibo Castle Gazette to commercial magazines for clients such as Clyde Property. Business Women Scotland magazine was established in 2009 during the first financial crisis. Lynne saw a gap in the market for women to have a platform to showcase their businesses, and Business Women Scotland was set up to inform and promote women in business, as well as provide information about the world of business and women in business roles. The magazine has grown organically and the business now includes annual awards, virtual roadshows and online networking events for women in business. In 2012 BWSLiveEvents evolved with the idea of taking the magazine content to a live event and bringing the magazine to life with inspirational speakers, hot business topics and relevant exhibitors. Events were regularly hosted in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen before moving online. Business Women Scotland works in conjunction with the Scottish Government as part of its outreach programme, encouraging more women to step forward in business. In 2018 Lynne received an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for services to the promotion of women in business. Interiors is still one of Lynne’s passions and she had the opportunity to design a bar in Aberdeen which has received a number of accolades.
