A note from Mr. Coffey

We are truly lucky to have the opportunity to perform a concert this
year. When speaking with many of the students seated behind me, I have
reminded them of this because many districts in our area have simply given
up on music for this school year; choosing to focus attention elsewhere and
restarting their music programs whenever things return to “normal.” Here
in Lyndhurst, we muddled through the challenges facing the music program
such as social distancing and virtual school. Something that should not go
unmentioned tonight is the fact that playing together as an ensemble, which
is one of the most difficult things to do as a musician, is physically
impossible during virtual learning. We were unable to practice ensemble
playing with any kind of regularity for almost 11 months. Needless to say, we
were all a little rusty when we began consistent classes this winter.
I have so many people to acknowledge and thank this evening. First, I
would like to thank our principal, Mrs. Shana Wright, and vice-principal, Mrs.
Theresa Brennen, for all of their support throughout this challenging school
year. Second, I would like to thank all my colleagues in the music
department, Mr. Brian Lang, Mr. James Chwalyk, Mr. Nicholas Cardone, and
our fearless leader, Ms. Elena Wise! It is truly an honor to work with such
fine people and to call you all close friends. Further, I owe a huge amount of
gratitude to that parents of the LMS Band. I am told that being a parent of a
middle school can be a thankless job, so if you have not been told this in a
while, thank you for all the support this year. It was a tough one, but we
made it!
Lastly, I could not let a public musical event in Lyndhurst go by without
mentioning Nick “Coach” Dellosa. Many people here tonight may not know
him, however we are all currently benefitting from his influence as the head
of the music department for over three and a half decades before his
retirement last June. He inherited the LHS Band in 1983 with 12 musicians
and through his undying patience and determination, grew the program to
over 112 musicians, and to a point where it was able to withstand a year-long
pandemic. Next time you come visit the LMS band room, you will probably
notice a sign hanging above my desk that says “BE COACH” which is my daily
reminder to attempt to emulate the same patience and passion for this job
that he brought with him each and every morning for many years.
Thank you so much for coming this evening and enjoy the concert!

Program notes (in order of performance)

The Star-Spangled Banner is the national anthem of the United States of
America. Its lyrics come from a poem, “The Defence of Fort M’Henry,” written
in 1814 by Francis Scott Key. He was inspired by the 15-star and 15-stripe
flag that stayed up throughout an entire night during the Battle of Baltimore
in the War of 1812. The poem was later set to music (performed this evening)
by John Stafford Smith and would officially become our nation’s anthem in
1931. It is traditional to stand if able and to remove any hats or caps not part
of a uniform during its performance.

Overdrive is an irrepressible, high-energy composition with driving rhythms
and catchy melodies combined with power cords to create a tune you will all
be whistling on your way home. I hope you enjoy this piece as much as the
students enjoyed learning it. It is definitely a favorite of theirs.

Joyful Spirit is a challenging march composed by an old music teacher of
mine, Patrick Burns. He wrote it while recalling fond memories he had of
playing in his middle school band not far from here in Bloomfield, NJ. “I
remember noticing how much more interesting and fun the music was
compared to the pieces I had played in elementary school.”

Burritos to Go is a Latin-rock tune composed by Victor Lopez, a highly
acclaimed educator, composer and arranger who serves as a high school
band director in Miami Florida.
Evil Ways is a song made famous by Mexican-American rock band Santana
from their 1969 self-titled album. Released as single in 1969, it became
Santana’s first top 40 and top 10 hit in the US. Today, we still hear it on the
radio and being performed by marching bands all around the country as a
popular stand tune.

Sideways Walking Dog is a rock-funk chart with an incredibly infectious
melody. This piece and all its rhythmic complexities will be serving as the
farewell “swan song” for our fantastic 8th grade drummer, Drew Bancroft.

Seconds Out is a term that is often misunderstood. As a historical
reference, it is used in the sport of boxing just before the boxers are about
to begin to fight. It is an order, by the referee, that all coaches, trainers, etc.
leave the ring. In other words, helpers (or seconds) must be out. At this
point, it is all up to the fighters to rise to the challenge alone.
Take a moment to notice the all-8th grader percussion section being
used for this piece. They have worked so hard on their parts for Seconds
Out. This is by far our longest and most challenging piece of music this
evening due to the stamina and knowledge of music required to perform it.
