HEADING 8 6th August, 2021 LEARNING IN THE CLASSROOM SENIOR SCHOOL During our fourth Unit of Inquiry, students have been looking at information about Earth and our Solar System by relating it to our central idea, “Earth is a unique planet within a complex solar system”. Students have been working independently and in group situations. Senior students have been enjoying investigating how and why seasons occur, the relationship between the Sun, Earth and the Moon and how day and night occur. They have looked into the relationship between Earth and celestial bodies in our solar system and the impacts of Earth’s position and movement. Students are currently working in collaborative groups to design a display which demonstrates their understanding of the central idea. Their display must include something visual, written, mathematical and tactical. Students will be self-reflecting on their social and self-management skills after each session to help them develop good practices for Exhibition next term. 1
6th August, 2021 Senior students have been enjoying watching and talking about the Tokyo Olympics. As a result, we have tied in the Maths unit of Data Representation and Graphing using statistics from the Tokyo games. Students have been creating their own graphs to compare and analyse swimming results from the Rio 2016 Olympics and Tokyo 2020 Olympics. In class, students participated in their own class mini Olympic Games. The events consisted of 100 metre run, bean bag throw, skipping in 1 minute, shooting hoops in 1 minute, and long jump. Students thoroughly enjoyed this lesson and used the results to create their own graph. 5/6D also awarded Gold, Silver and Bronze medal positions. During Reading sessions, Senior students have enjoyed reading from a range of text about Earth and our Solar System. Whilst in lockdown, students were able to explore a number of texts on Epic Reading and used a variety of different resources to verify information. Students have studied and evaluated how the design features of a non-fiction text help the reader to understand the topic. They have gone a step further and started to critique how the author explains the topic in terms of quality of writing, organisation and clarity. Throughout this unit of inquiry, students will be focusing on writing an explanation text. Students have done extensive research into Earth’s place in our Solar System, how and why we have day and night, and seasons. Students have written an explanation text explaining the action and process of events in a detailed manner about their chosen topic. Many students added a labelled diagram or flow chart to support their explanation text. 2
6th August, 2021 MIDDLE SCHOOL Middle school students have shown their resilience and adaptability as we saw much of the last few weeks work being undertaken in remote learning. Some examples of the work students completed remotely are show below. As part of a unit on area and perimeter, students built a paddock or a gaol and worked out how much fencing would be needed for it. We have also worked on capacity and volume and some students chose to make a potion that equalled 600ml, with 6 ingredients but none could be 100ml exactly. While back at school students worked on a poetry unit where they looked at haiku, limerick and shape as well as other styles. Here are some student’s poems relating to our unit of inquiry on celebrations. Christmas by Maya Chinese New Year by Tong & Kemi Cold, Colourful Exciting, noisy Unwrapping, finding, playing Giving away red envelopes Spending time with family Dragon Santa Easter (extract) by Amelia and Alyna Here’s an egg behind the pot, and one up in the tree, I gonna get that one in the bush! Oh no! My brother beat me. I’m on egg number seven, but there’s still so many more. I’ve go to beat my big brother, who’s now on twenty four! 3
6th August, 2021 Wellbeing activities continued to be included in the remote planner, including tidying your sock drawer and taking a photo of your favourite pair, creating some fruit art, and making a Lego model of an explorer students wrote a biography on. JUNIOR SCHOOL https ://whateds aid.wordpres s .com/ In writing, we have been learning how to write a persuasive text. A persuasive texts purpose is to present a point of view and seeks to persuade a reader. To introduce this, students came back into the classroom with all their chairs stacked up. There was confusion in the Juniors as the classroom chairs went on strike due to the fact that they didn’t think the children were treating them very well! The children soon realised their mistakes and wrote letters back to the chairs to persuade them to return to the classrooms so the children could continue to use them. The Junior school students enjoy reading and exploring books. Lately, we have been exploring non-fiction texts and discussing the features that we expect to see and read in such books - features such as real pictures, accurate facts and a content page. We all share the new information we have read about and making connections to what we already know about the topic. As part of reading, we have been focusing on fluency. When reading any book aloud we are practicing to read several words or sentences fluently. We aim to read these using our normal speaking pace and not to sound like a robot. To help our reading sound fluent we also need to pause at a comma and a take slightly longer pause for a breath at full stops. 4
6th August, 2021 For our new Unit of Inquiry, Sharing the Planet, we started with a provocation of creating messy classrooms that represented polluted environments. Students identified their feelings about being in such an environment and tried to infer how different animals would have fared if these were their habitats. Students discussed different positive and negative impacts people may have on habitats. In Maths, the Junior school have been investigating and learning all about the different features and values of the Australian coin. The students have identified and compared the sizes, shapes and colours of the coins to learn more about the value that each hold and represent. During this investigation, students were given a range of coins and asked to assist their teacher in co- constructing a series of success criteria aimed at how to develop their abilities most effectively and efficiently in counting, sorting and adding groups of coins. After the success criteria was developed, students began organising the coins into like groups and deciding whether it was better to stack or leave them in a loose pile. Students then begun working on strategies on how to best count and add up the total value of all their coins. Some counted and used their books to keep track as they went, while others stacked their coins into more manageable piles of dollars. 5
6th August, 2021 FOUNDATION During remote learning Foundation students have continued to investigate how they can use their imagination to help them create, solve problems and see things from other perspectives. Many students created Max’s mask or a cave from reading ‘Where the Wild Things Are’. Other students were open-minded and had a go at designing a dance that they shared with their peers online. We watched rock stars, contemporary dancers and breakdancers. It was also lovely to see some family members having a dance in the background during our online session. Through music, students created many different musical instruments using recycled materials. Students used their imagination to develop guitars, shakers and drums. We are thrilled to be back in the classroom to continue to create, think and express ourselves using our imagination. 100 Days Foundation Celebration On Monday 2nd August 2021, Foundation students celebrated 100 days of learning at school!!! As we opened the door in the morning to greet our students, we could not believe our eyes! Our students had aged over the weekend. They were all 100 years old. We found it hard to recognise them. Our celebrations started straight away, making their 100 days smarter crowns, taking their time and ensuring they thought carefully about their design. As part of their writing session, the students described what they thought they would look like and be doing if they were 100 years old. Next, the students participated in a parade in the gym. They walked around to music and showed everyone how they had dressed up to portray themselves as 100 years old. We all completed an exercise routine that had 100 moves eg 10 star jumps, 10 toe touches etc and then sat together in the gym and ate our snack. Each student was presented with a special certificate to congratulate them on reaching this fantastic milestone. 6
6th August, 2021 After recess, we watched ‘Jungle Beat’ while munching on popcorn and enjoying an icy pole. After lunch, students completed a 100 numeracy activity by adding 10 items, such as 10 flowers, 10 stars to each part of their activity page. They counted their groups by 10’s and gave a big cheer when they got to 100. To finish off the great day, students participated in their weekly PMP session. Congratulations on completing 100 days at school. We are so proud of you all and look forward to many more days of learning together. 7
