WELC OME HOME If you’re looking for a true taste of Lakes living, escape to Low Longmire, nestled between the villages of Oxen Park and Bouth, tucked away at the tip of the less tourist- trodden southern Lake District. A whitewashed traditional Beatrix Potter storybook cottage, dating back 250 years, Low Longmire Cottage is the ultimate haven for true Lakes aficionados, walkers and traditionalists.
“It ’s protected land; the Lake District National Park and Rusland Horizons help preserve public footpaths and the way of life. That ’s what ’s amazing about this home – it ’s in the middle of all that.” STEP INSIDE Step back to a simpler time, at Low Longmire Cottage, a home wrapped up in the beautiful landscape of the Rusland Valley, rural farmsteads, bird sanctuaries. Peaceful and secluded, the restful silence broken only by birdsong, make your way to the gabled front door. Beyond the porch, a glazed, sky- blue door opens into what could be the kitchen-diner of one of Beatrix Potter’s colourful characters. Dressed in locally sourced items, many from the reclamation store at Yew Tree Barn, including a pair of wooden clogs above the original fireplace by the dining area.
Furniture befitting the cottage’s antiquity and seat amidst the C OUNTRY surrounding countryside adds to the ambience, whilst underfloor CHARM heating infuses the room with warmth from beneath the flagstone tiles. Country charm comes complete with contemporary assurances of convenience; the electrics have been replaced and a new boiler added alongside the introduction of mains water. Original beams, exposed overhead, add character, with cupboards and cubbyholes all contributing to the vintage charisma of the cottage. Spotlighting illuminates the sky- blue central island in the kitchen, fitted with a Rangemaster and dishwasher. A freestanding fridge- freezer stands by a dresser. The washer and dryer are conveniently tucked away in the cupboard beneath the stairs.
“I love Its untouched C OUNTRY spaces, nooks and CHARM crannies.” From the kitchen, step down into the studio lounge, with high ceilings, bright views out over the garden and countryside and a warm cheerful atmosphere. Originally a barn, planning permission existed to extend this conversion to two storeys, should this be of interest for future buyers. With a contemporary feel in comparison to the main cottage, this studio section still retains its own quirks and charms, climb the ladder stairs and peek into the mezzanine level. A sleepover den for children, a yoga space, the choice is yours… Snuggle up in front of the multifuel stove and admire the breathtaking views out over the fields, where lambs frolic and gambol in the springtime.
VERDANT VIEWS Returning through the home, take the stairs up from the kitchen-diner, curving past a window, spilling light through, to arrive at a shower room on the left. Tiled and featuring shower, wash basin and WC, this provides the guest bedroom with its own, separate washing facilities. Across the way, a second room of refreshment features bath with shower tap, wash basin and WC, set above wooden flooring. A linen closet is on hand for storing towels, whilst light streams in through the window. Views out over the countryside are framed through the window of the second bedroom, a bright and light room currently housing two beds and Laura Ashley cupboards with drawers and hanging space. Opposite, the master bedroom contains an original hanging rail and soaks up glorious views over the countryside opposite. Double windows open to the sunrise and views over the fields, water meadows of forget-me-not, and contentedly bleating sheep.
“ The real garden is everything on the other side of the wall; it goes on forever. I walk out at 6pm and come back at 10pm in the summer. It ’s still light.” STEP OUTSIDE View the finest sunsets from the garden, where a bench is deliberately situated to soak up the views out over the fields and nearby ‘one tree hill’ overlooking Colton parish church.
