M A R C H 2 0 2 1 Our fundamental purpose is to assure all students acquire the knowledge, skills, and behaviors to be successful individuals and responsible ci:zens. Longfellow Leopards NewsleOer Every year Longfellow students and staff celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday on March 2 and Read Across America Week. During the week of March 1, we parFcipated in several fun and exciFng acFviFes that had something to do with reading. This year each classroom received a children’s classic that students became familiar with, and shared with the rest of Longfellow students and staff. Some examples of these books are Goodnight Moon, Curious George, Where the Wild Things Are, Alice in Wonderland, The Wizard of Oz, Anne of Green Gables, Harry PoOer, The LiOle Prince, and many other wonderful classics. Each classroom created a video about their book. These videos were shared with everyone each day of that week. Please check out our posFngs on the website and our Facebook to see how Longfellow students are excited about reading. Please ask your children to share what they have learned from their book or about books presented to them by other students. “You’re never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read to a child.” These wise words by Dr. Seuss inspire us to share the joy of reading and learning with young readers. Please find a few minutes this week to sit down and share the magic of reading with your child.

Resilience For the month of March, we will focus on the trait of resilience to L.E.A.P with good character. What is resilience? Resilience is bouncing back from setbacks and learning from failure. This is how we will define resilience for our students: “When you have trouble, you bounce back and try again.” This definition comes from the book, A Mindset for Learning, by Kristine Mraz and Christine Hertz. These authors suggest that Books About Resilience “resilience is essential to learning”. After the Fall: How Without resilience, learning Humpty Dumpty Got Back anything new is impossible. This Library Association and then allows all students to read favorites from voted upon for a winner. previous years and share their LOVE of Grades 4 and 5 are still eligible to read 4 books and be part of reading with others in their classroom and a party planned for May. A also in other grades. chart on the 2nd floor shows their progress. Library is one of the favorite subjects for students. Just like: Art, Music, and P.E. when we have a shortened week and library is missed students can’t wait to get back. We are happy to have students stop by anytime they have finished a book to find another good READ. In 4th and 5th we also read aloud. We are currently reading, “And then it happened” a series of short stories. Each one involves 3 grade school boys who are always into mischief that has a funny ending. Every library in our Hastings Public Schools has a para professional to help students. We are fortunate to have this position available. As a librarian I am shared in three buildings so when I am at another school I know that students are still able to have access to this space!
