Thursday 27 February From the Principal Dear Parents and Guardians, Today, our school community came together along with invited guests to induct our 2020 student leaders. Congratulations to the following students; Laurence Tomasetig (School Captain), Jace Bethel (Sports Captain), Ronin Kovacich (Student Council President), Lanie Booth (Student Council Secretary), Myer Wyburg, (Student Council Treasurer) and Jaiden Booth (Student Leader). I look forward to working with these student leaders to make our school and community a better place for all. They already have a number of ideas that they want to do. The challenge is now for them to lead from the front and ensure that they happen. Good luck to our student leaders. Last week, our Parents and Citizens’ Association also held their Annual General Meeting. Thank you to the following people who were sworn in as the executive for 2020; President – Stephanie Eckford, Vice President – Pippa Tomasetig, Secretary – Sonya Elmazis and Treasurer – Rachael Booth. Our P&C do a wonderful job ensuring that our students and school community are very well equipped and looked after. Thank you to all members of our P&C for their continued efforts and support. I would love to see all families represented at our next meeting. Sincerely, Troy Patti Principal In the Classroom All students are now well and truly into the swing of things in the classroom with classroom routines now well established. It has been pleasing to see a number of students starting to take the initiative and getting themselves ready for activities that they know are about to happen in the classroom. Well done kids! In English, students in P-2 have been busy retelling narrative stories that are based on princesses and dragons. They have really enjoyed the book “Hunting for Dragons”; a humorous book that details the ventures of a young girl who tries to capture a dragon in her house. Students have also been identifying parts of speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives and pronouns), stating their likes and dislikes of a text and making personal connections to the text. Our year 3-6 students have also been learning about all things narrative. They too have been learning about different language features and they have been analyzing their effect on different texts. The students have also been accessing the Queensland Government’s online e-reader library where they have been reading the quest novel “Deltora Quest – The City of Rats”. They have really enjoyed reading
this book and have been analyzing the different textual and language features used by the author. They have two assessment tasks that they are working towards for this unit; an analysis of a chapter or a short story as well as writing their own narrative. In mathematics, the students have been learning about the following: Prep – Numbers to 10 and sorting objects Year 1 – Addition and subtraction – identifying the parts and the whole amount. Year 2 – Counting in 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s. Year 3 – Representing and writing numbers to 1000. Year 5 – Representing unit fractions, comparing fractions and locating fractions on a number line. Year 6 – Chance and data. Making dot plots and picture graphs and retrieving and analyzing data from different types of graphs. In other subject areas, the P-2 students are about to complete their first assessment task in Physical Education. For this task, they will be getting their ball skills assessed. The year 3-4 students will also complete their first assessment in this subject next week. They have been practicing circus tricks and will perform a short circus routine. Our year 5 and 6 students are also commencing their first part of their HASS assessment, which links in with the work that they have been doing with graphs in Mathematics. Playgroup The Clare State School Playgroup has started again for this year. Playgroup is a fantastic way for young children to play and learn with others and is also an excellent outing for parents. So far this year, our playgroup has had a lot of interest from families in the Clare community, which is pleasing to see. Leadership Camp Two weeks ago, our year 6 students attended the Grip Leadership Conference in Townsville as part of their leadership camp. The students had a wonderful time learning all of the important elments that make a great leader. Their participation in the interactive conference was second to none with all students eagerly contributing infront of a large audience of student leaders from other schools.
Following the Conference, the students brainstormed ideas that they would like to engage with throughout this year. These ideas covered fundraising, school projects and community projects. These will be tabled at the first student council meeting. After a spot of swimming, a delicious meal at Longboard Bar and Grill, a play at the Strand and some gelato to finish the night, the students were ready for day 2. On this day, they first of all went to the Drill Hall Art Studio where they made model castles out of corflute. After that they went to Kingpin Bowling and Laser Tag. Here, the students had heaps of fun but it should be noted that the teachers beat the students at both bowling and laser tag! We then returned home, well and truly exhausted. Burdekin Small Schools’ Cross Country The Burdekin Small Schools’ Cross Country will be held at Gumlu State School again this year. Permission forms are attached as well as a tuckshop order form. Please return these to school, especially the tuckshop form, promptly. Thank you. NAPLAN Online In Term 2, students in year 3 and 5 will be completing NAPLAN Online. This is the second year that our school has completed the NAPLAN testing online. We will be commencing practice tests in the next couple of weeks to ensure that our students are familiar with the NAPLAN Online Testing Platform. We will include weekly computer lessons and will commence NAPLAN practices through the NAPLAN Public Demonstration Site (https://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public-demonstration-site) where students can practice answering NAPLAN-style questions and familiarize themselves with the testing platform. This site is also accessible to students and parents at home and I strongly encourage all families with students in year 2-6 to log in to this site to help your child with their preparations and increase everyone’s understanding of NAPLAN Online. If you have any questions regarding NAPLAN Online, please make a time to come and speak with us.
