Welcome our guest presenter Ms NH Mabuza Student Funding Division 14
DIVISION STUDENT FUNDING NH Mabuza Student Retention Presentation
DSF MANDATE • The Division Student Funding (DSF) administers funds in the form of; External Bursaries NSFAS Scholarships
…DFS MANDATE Internal funding • to students who are academically deserving and financial needy. • These funds are allocated based on the criteria set out by the sponsors/ Donors. There has been substantial increase of funding available to students in the past years. The recent announcement of fee free education by the then President also increased the funding pool.
External Bursaries • Bursaries are divided into the following categories: Government Bursaries: These are bursaries provided by National and Provincial Government Departments: Cooperate Bursaries: De beers, Telkom, Edward Lekganyane; etc. SETA Bursaries: These include ETDP Seta, MICT seta etc. Students apply directly to Donors/Sponsors
NSFAS • NSFAS is funding provided by the government to assist financial needy yet academically deserving students studying at Higher Education Institutions. • Following the announcement by the then President Jacob Zuma, students entering for the first time in 2018 at Universities are awarded grants and not loans
…NSFAS • Criteria for NSFAS Funding – 2018 Students – Household income of R350 000.00 per annum – Academically deserving – Studying for a formal qualification • Criteria for NSFAS Funding - Students prior 2018 – Household income of R122 000.00 per annum – Academically deserving – Studying for a formal qualification • Students apply directly to NSFAS.
NSFAS Funders • NSFAS Funders: These bursary funds are channeled through NSFAS. • These include Funza Lushaka, Nat Skills, Disability, Nedbank, Social Development etc. Students apply directly with NSFAS
New Funding Model Student Centered Model • Central Application System (CAS). • All students to apply through to NSFAS directly. • Student s apply only once. • Funding awarded for the entire qualification. • Funds follow a student • Students have direct relationship with NSFAS
Internal Funding • Unisa makes funds available to students who are academically deserving and financially needy. • Unisa Funding include the following: Merit Bursary Council bursary
…Internal Funding Post graduate Bursaries This is for students who are registered for Honours, Masters and Doctoral studies; It covers tuition, and research related activities such as Editing, field work etc.; Students must have passed the proposal module to be eligible for funding All these bursaries are subject to the availability of funding and budget approval by council
Scholarships • These are mainly for post graduate students • These covers Tuition and research activities such as editing, binding etc. • The Unisa international office administers international scholarships
SUCCESSES • Funding available to students has grown drastically over the years. • DSF successfully administered over a billion in 2018. • DSF funded approximately 95 000 students in 2018.
Challenges • Demand versus supply is a huge problem as more funding is required to assist all students in need of funding • Insufficient allocation of funds leaving students outstanding debt • Outstanding documents from students remain our biggest concern • Changing of contact details by students. This includes addresses and cellphone numbers
…Challenges • The NSFAS Student Centred Model provided challenges that led to some students struggling especially with the allowances through Sbux. • Late funding decisions by NSFAS • Lack of integration between NSFAS and Unisa • Unisa timelines i.e. registration differ from other institutions leading to challenges to meet deadlines from donors as well as acquiring necessary bursary documentation

Time to reflect 2018 -2019 Achievements vs Regrets
Counting the costs • When you look back, what do you see? • Could you have done better? • Are you proud of the outcome? • Is all lost? • Should I change my path? • What is it worth it? • Where can I improve? • Lessons learnt
Time to take stock
Successes and Failures Failures/Challenges Success/Achievements • I failed some (Most) • I managed to pass some • Where did I lack? What did I modules miss? • What did I do best? Can I • What do I need to improve? springboard from there? • Is there still hope for me? • Can this be my foundation/ Can I buil from this
Where to from here?? Re-Focus, Re Planning, Back to drawing board
There is still hope for me • Better planning • Better Time management (Time table) • Reducing the workload • Breaking tasks in smaller chunks • Set Priorities (What matters most, Is it necessary) • Acknowledging the lacks and weaknesses • I can ask for help • I can do it better next time • Have the courage to say NO
Way forward
Come 2019 Bring it on
