JUNE 2022 Wednesday, June 29 at 7:30 pm In this month’s episode of Home is Here we’re hoofing it to the windward side of O‘ahu to explore the healing powers of horses. Based in Waimānalo, Therapeutic Horsemanship of Hawaii is a nonprofit dedicated to improving the minds and bodies of riders. Executive Director Dana Vennen says, “To be able to provide a place for kids to go be outside, be with the horses, be with each other in an outdoor safe environment, I think that’s the neatest thing that we’re able to provide right now alongside with improving self-confidence, improving physical strength, even improving their social skills.” It’s not easy to keep a small, family-run business open for more than a century. But the legacy of Honolulu’s Nisshodo Candy Store carries on with third-generation owner, Mike Hirao. Known for pillowy pieces of mochi, Hirao was a semifinalist this year for the prestigous James Beard Award under the Outstanding Baker category. “I hope that Nisshodo can continue to ... fill a need for our community and our visitors. We strive to do the best we can,” says Hirao. Raise your hand if you love math. How about culture? Now what if you combined the two? That’s where Dr. Linda Furuto comes in. She’s a mathematics education professor at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa and is a pioneer in the field of ethnomathematics. Put simply, ethnomathematics is the study of math from a cultural perspective. Students investigate the mathematical principles involved in everything from navigating canoes by the stars to traditional fishpond construction. “I learned as a little child that the world is a textbook filled with stories from mauka to makai, and that what occurs outside of the classroom is as important as what occurs on the inside,” says Furuto.
