The expansion and upgrade of the current facilities will allow for a further 200 new apprenticeship training places annually. The Queensland Apprenticeships Centre aims to be at the forefront of ensuring that current and future gasfitters can safely include working with hydrogen as part of their skillset and be leaders in a hydrogen powered industry. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says, “Queensland’s and Australia’s growing populations and economies will also require increasing supplies of reliable affordable and preferably renewable power. Manufacturing sectors that use hydrogen in their processes will also benefit from a reliable domestic supply.” Along with the specialised gas training facilities, the Centre will house an upgraded welding training centre, commercial level HVAC systems in line with new Queensland government regulations, fire protection alarm and emergency warning systems, expanded roof safety training including safe work on solar panel arrays and, a dedicated special hazards fire system for the State’s only special hazards apprenticeship training. As with all PICAC campuses, energy efficiency and sustainability are an integral part of the design. The Centre will feature low carbon technology such as recladding the roof and walls with Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs), and the installation of rooftop PV solar. Another PICAC feature will be exposed plumbing components that are usually found enclosed in the walls of conventional buildings. By exposing the internal systems, the building itself provides a working example of the latest technologies to all learners and visitors to the facility. The Centre’s plumbing and fire protection systems will be installed by up to 70 plumbing and sprinkler fitting apprentices. The aim is to assist those who have been affected by the economic slowdown caused by COVID-19 and to provide an opportunity to work on the installation of some of the latest, state-of-the-art technology currently available in Industry. Construction commenced 30 November 2020 with completion expected for June 2022. For more information and current training at PICAC, see www. picac.edu.au w w w.plumbingconnec tion.com.au 23

The Vortex/TES unit is unique when it comes to waste to energy technology. The waste to energy system is designed to convert input fuel into a high temperature clean thermal gas that can then be used through multiple applications. BEST PRACTICE THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR QUALITY Johnstone, McGee & Gandy PTY LTD technical office – hydraulics Adam Johnson addresses the use of zip ties by plumbers to fix pipework rather than clips and brackets. O n my desk at work I have sat the cardboard top off a ‘Savoy Biscuits’ box within plain view. For those not familiar with their trademarked statement, it reads ‘There is no substitute for quality’ I use it to question myself constantly, is this ‘best practice?’ ‘Best practice’ is a term that does not seem to get enough attention in a world pressed for time and competitive pricing. But it is one that is key to ensuring the protection of an industry. ‘Best practice’ is a term that should be worn like a badge of honour by one of the two fully ‘licensed’ trades in the country. Instead, it would seem that plumbing is headed on a ‘race to the bottom’ trajectory. With contractors being pushed to meet tight construction programs there is an apparent gravitation to time saving/cost cutting measures being implemented when it comes to pipework. Gone are the days when plumbing was considered by its subjects as an ’art form’ hard drawn copper bends, off sets with a real pride for the finished product.
