ABOUT THE FESTIVAL DES ARTS DE SAINT-SAUVEUR A firm belief in the fundamental importance of culture in our society has brought the Festival des Arts de Saint-Sauveur into the ranks of major arts and culture events staged in Quebec and the rest of Canada each year. FASS is now the largest regional dance presenter in the country, both in terms of the number of large-scale shows it presents and the size of its attendance. For nearly 30 years, the Festival has welcomed the greatest artists of dance and music on the national and international scene in the enchanting setting of the village of Saint-Sauveur. The Festival’s artistic direction has been orchestrated by Guillaume Côté since 2014. His experience, along with the expertise acquired in his career as a dancer, composer and choreographer, have led him to affirm the mandate of the Festival while putting added emphasis on creation, diver- sity and support for Quebec artists. Founded in 1992 as the Festival des Arts Hiawatha, the Festival was renamed the Festival des Arts de Saint-Sauveur in 1997. The Festival first received recognition at the Grands Prix du Tourisme des Laurentides awards, with a special mention as Cultural Event of the Year in 2000, and has received the “Grand Prix du Tourisme des Laurentides” in 2007, 2008 and 2014. In 2009 FASS was awarded the “Prix Ambassadeur culturel des Laurentides” in the Cultural Festivals and Events category. For its 2020 edition, FASS was awarded the Prix Opus in the Specialist Presenter of the Year category. Under the leadership of Etienne Lavigne as Executive Director, it has contributed actively to laying the foundations of a genuine cultural hotspot with a reputation that extends well beyond the geographical boundaries of the Laurentians. OUR MISSION The Festival des Arts de Saint-Sauveur is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the discovery and presentation of the best choreographers, dancers and musicians. Through its eclectic, inclusive, accessible and original programming, the Festival seeks to support and inspire artists from Canada and around the world, and to introduce audiences to their work and passion in an intimate setting.
PROGRAM COPPÉLIA SUITE LENGTH 8 min 30 s CHOREOGRAPHY Marina Villanueva based on Arthur St-Léon MUSIC Léo Delibes CAST Anna Ishii, Bernard Dubois, Kiara Felder, Théodore Poubeau, Sofia González, Giuseppe Canale, Catherine Toupin, Stefano Russuello, Tatiana Lerebours, Enno Kleinehanding An excerpt from the great ballet-pantomime. The action of this classic was inspired by the E.T.A. Hoffmann tale “The Sandman.” Frantz is engaged to Swanilda, but falls for Coppelia, not knowing that she is no more than a mecha- nical doll created by the mad old scientist Coppelius... DANS MA MAIN LENGTH 4 min 30 s CHOREOGRAPHY Gaby Baars MUSIC Jean-Michel Blais CAST Maude Sabourin, Raphaël Bouchard Montreal-based Dutch choreographer Gaby Baars presents with Dans ma main, his very first creation for Les Grands Ballets. The piece is a pas de deux that conjures up the paradoxes of new love, both simple and complex. Like hands on the keys of a piano, Baars has bodies moving with harmony and grace.
FÊTE DES FLEURS À GENZANO LENGTH 9 min CHOREOGRAPHY Auguste Bournonville MUSIC Holger Simon Paulli CAST Yui Sugawara, Célestin Boutin A love duet that serves as a setting for joie de vivre and mischief. A gem of the Danish classical repertoire, Fête des fleurs à Genzano is the only excerpt still performed to this day from the full-length ballet of the same name. This divertissement demands both a technical virtuosity that is lightness itself and an inexhaustible stamina.
7TH SYMPHONY (2ND MOVEMENT) LENGTH 9 min CHOREOGRAPHY Uwe Scholz MUSIC Symphonie No. 7, Beethoven CAST Myriam Simon, Roddy Doble, Anya Nesvitaylo, Graeme Fuhrman, Maude Sabourin, James Lyttle, Maude Fleury, Nicholas Jones, Tatiana Lerebours, Étienne Delorme, Julia Bergua, Antoine Bertran A bequest from the late Uwe Scholz. The dancers, in symbiosis with the majestic music of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7, will present a work that produces, with its athletic achievements and its geometry danced in unison, a leitmotif effect. Through its remarkable musicality, this ballet on pointe, as finely cut as a diamond, leaves no one indifferent. It makes for a memorable evening of music and dance. SONATA DE LUNA LENGTH 6 min CHOREOGRAPHY Edgar Zendejas MUSIC Caetano Veloso CAST Hamilton Nieh, Enno Kleinehanding Montreal-based Mexican choreographer Edgar Zendejas presents a duet strongly inspired by the lyrics and everlasting voice of Caetano Veloso. Sonata de Luna is a dance under the moon of two beings where support is constant and mutual. Every relationship, either with a father, a brother, a friend, a partner or a spiritual guide, brings to us a message to help us in our endless life transitions.
DEPARTED LENGTH 7 min CHOREOGRAPHY Vanesa G.R. Montoya COSTUME DESIGN Vanesa G.R. Montoya LIGHTING DESIGN Marc Parent MUSIC Unchained Melody par Alex North & Hy Zaret, performed by The Righteous Brothers, The Dear Repose by Charles Papasoff CAST Vanesa G.R. Montoya, Célestin Boutin Departed addresses our intimate connections and the feeling one experiences on the loss of a loved one. An unfillable void, a life forever changed. The piece is an evocation from various standpoints of the almost crippling sensation of being deprived of a great love, and the absence of a familiar presence: life lived mechanically, the same thing done over and over with that loved one now done alone. LES BOURGEOIS LENGTH 2 min 55 s CHOREOGRAPHY Ben Van Cauwenbergh MUSIC Jacques Brel, « Les Bourgeois » CAST Roddy Doble Belgian choreographer Ben van Cauwenbergh presents an energetic and theatrical solo to the upbeat music of his compatriot Jacques Brel.
FLAMMES DE PARIS LENGTH 6 min CHOREOGRAPHY Vassili Vainonen MUSIC Die Flamme von Paris (Flammes de Paris): Pas de deux (arr. March): Act IV: Allegretto; Act IV: Moderato: Men’s Variation; Act IV: Allegretto: Women’s Variation; Act IV: Coda by Boris Asafiev, interpreted by the Sofia National Opera Orchestra & Boris Spassov CAST Rachele Buriassi, Esnel Ramos An excerpt from this essential piece of the classical repertoire, faithful to the Russian ballet tradition. Set against the backdrop of the French Revolution, Flammes de Paris tells to story of Jeanne and her brother Jérôme, two young idealists from Marseilles who are on their way to Paris. A breathtaking pas de deux that combines technical virtuosity and elation! IMPORTANT REMINDERS The use of cameras and camcorders is strictly forbidden. Out of conside- ration for the performers and for their safety, please make sure that you have turned off your cell phones and any other devices that may emit noise.
ABOUT LES GRANDS BALLETS For over 60 years, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens has been a creation, produc- tion and international performance company devoted to the development of dance in all its forms, while always staying faithful to the spirit of classical ballet. The dancers of Les Grands Ballets, under the artistic direction of Ivan Caval- lari, perform choreography by both long-established and trendsetting creators. Situated at the heart of Montreal’s Quartier des spectacles, Les Grands Ballets offers leisure services in its STUDIOS and supports its National Centre for Dance Therapy, which promotes all the benefits that dance can bring. The company’s mission is also to ensure accessibility to art for everyone; in that spirit its achie- vements include the founding of The Nutcracker Fund, which every year enables thousands of children to enjoy a first ballet experience. Les Grands Ballets, recognized for its excellence, creativity and daring, is fully committed to the local community, and is acclaimed on stages around the world. grandsballets.com IVAN CAVALLARI ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Born in Bolzano, Italy, in 1964, Ivan Cavallari received his initial training at the Teatro alla Scala PHOTO : SASHA ONYSHCHENKO Ballet School in Milan. He will present his version of Romeo & Juliette in grand premiere in March 2022, at Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier.
