CORNARD UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB HISTORY Cornard United are believed to have formed in 1920, playing in the Sudbury & District League for four seasons. They then transferred to the Nayland & District League for the 1924/25 – 1927/28 seasons, winning the league in all four seasons they were in it. In 1928/29 they returned back to the Sudbury & District League. Nothing is known of the club between 1929 and when they reformed in 1964. In 2014, Cornard United celebrated its Golden Jubilee, having been re-formed back in 1964. The club initially played in The Sudbury Sunday League, before joining Division Three of The Bury and District League in 1966. They were promoted to Division Two at the end of their first season, and further promoted again at the end of the next season. In 1970 they transferred to Division Six of The Colchester & East Essex League and were promoted to Division Five in 1972. After winning all 26 matches of the 1973-74 season they were promoted once again, and over the next few seasons, further success brought more promotions so by 1975 they had reached Division Two. In 1976 the club switched leagues again, this time to Division One of The Essex and Suffolk Border League. However, when this league was restructured two seasons later the club were moved down to the Second Division. They remained in the Second Division until 1983 when they were promoted back to Division One. In 1985-86 they won promotion to the Premier Division, and in the 1988-89 season they won the league, the league cup and the Suffolk senior cup with a 1-0 victory over local rivals, Sudbury Wanderers. As a result of this success, the club was moved to Division One of the Eastern Counties League. They won this division at the first attempt, and were promoted to The Premier Division, where they remained until 1996, when after a poor season they were relegated back to the First Division, where they have remained ever since. Initially, the club played at the Great Cornard Recreation Ground, before moving to Great Cornard Upper School in 1975. It was not until 1982 that they moved to their current ground in Blackhouse Lane. The record attendance at this ground was set in 2001 when over 450 people watched a friendly match against West Ham United. After many years running The Club, Chairman and Manager, Chris Symes, left the club during 2013 and Mark Hoskin took over the roles. He, in turn, has now moved on and the current Chairman is Harvey Doherty who took over in 2014 after spending 10 years as chairman of Cornard dynamos.
The first team was managed by Paul Grainger, with Chris Tracy assisted by Jack Wignall taking over for 2015/16.Ry Lines & Liam Aves took up the reins partway through the 2017/18 season which was very much a transition season. Family commitments meant that Ry Lines stepped down ahead of the 2018/19 season. The team was managed for most of the 2018/19 season by player managers Matt Grove and Michael Schofield and Colin Athey as goal keeping coach. 2018/19 saw Cornard United make the final of the Suffolk Senior Cup, the first cup final in 30 years, unfortunately narrowly missing out to Achilles. First Team player managers Grove and Schofield decided to step down after the final. 2019/20 Cornard United Grassroots has been formed, chaired by Tony New. This consists of a number of teams from under 9s through to under 18s playing in Sunday leagues and based at the Delphi Sports Ground. 2019/20 sees another transition year for the first team following the resignation of joint player managers after the senior cup final and the majority of first team squad deciding to move elsewhere. The new first team management team of Dave Childs and Tom Clark with Colin Athey continuing as goal keeping coach take up the challenge. The start of 2020 sees Tom Clark take up the reins as first team manager assisted by Dan Hunt with Colin Athey continuing as Goalkeeper coach. The 2019/20 season was cut short and subsequently cancelled due to the Covid pandemic. 2020/21 sees Clark, Hunt and Athey continuing at the helm. The reserve team was resurrected for the 2018/19 season, playing in the Thurlow Nunn Reserve League. They were managed by Steve Rogers and Ray Manser. Ray Manser stepped down at the end of the season. 2019/20 season started with Steve Rogers assisted by Kern Harington. Shortly after the start of the season Steve Rogers decided to step down. Kern Harrington continued with his new assistant Jack Prentice. Under 18s. The 2019/20 season saw yet another management team of Mark Arnold and Chris Benham who are experienced youth coaches at Cornard Dynamos. Unfortunately both have had to step down due to unforeseen work commitments. Tim Jefferies has taken up the reins currently assisted by Tony New from the Cornard United Grassroots setup. Tim Jeffries has had to step down and now the U18s are managed by Tony New. For the 2021 Season the U18s are managed by Tony New assisted by Shaun Bates.

To increase attendances at our grounds, the Thurlow Nunn League, in conjunction with its clubs and sponsors, Thurlow Nunn, is promoting the need to turn matches into a more family-orientated entertainment in a family-friendly environment. The League understands that football is a game of intensity and passion. In the heat of the moment, frustrations grow, tempers can be lost and there is an urgent need for players and club management to share their feelings with others. The League also understands that, in that moment, language may be used that others may not feel is appropriate in a family setting. Nothing will send parents and/or grandparents heading quickly for the exits with their youngsters, never to return, than a constant stream of foul language. All we ask is that you encourage players and management to “Keep it down for the Kids”. To assist match officials identify those within the technical areas, the League has provided florescent bibs to all clubs competing in the Premier and Division One of the League. These should be used for all competitions by these clubs. Thank you Thurlow Nunn League The official home of the Eastern Counties League Leiston FC strongly support the recent FA statement that there should be a zero tolerance approach against racism and all forms of discrimination. Accordingly any form of discriminatory abuse whether it be based on race or ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, faith, age, ability or any other form of abuse will be reported to The Football Association for action by that Association.” (Useful Numbers - The FA 0800 085 0508/ Kick It Out 020 7253 0162
