The ‘Electric Irish Homes Textile Project’ is
a collaboration between Sligo-based artist
Anna Spearman and a group of women
exploring and responding to the themes
of the ‘Kitchen Promises’ exhibition. The
women’s artworks form an integral part
of ‘Kitchen Promises’ which opens at the
Museum of Country Life in July 2019.
The exhibition looks at the huge impact
of rural electrification on Irish housewives
and their homes during the 1950s and
1960s. This is a partnership between the
Museum, Dr. Sorcha O’Brien of Kingston
University, and Age & Opportunity. It
is funded by the UK Arts & Humanities
Research Council.

At the end of January 2019, we’re saying
goodbye to our Artist in Residence,
Róisín de Buitléar. Working on site at
                           Collins Barracks throughout 2018, Róisín
was an integral part of our education
                           programmes providing workshops
and tours of her exhibition ‘Caution
Fragile!’ to a wide range of audiences.
Over the past year, she has informed,
inspired and engaged primary and post-
primary schools, third level art students,
designers, art historians and the public.
Róisín was also a part of our partnership
project ‘Beady Gopa – Beady Pockets’, a
collaboration with Pavee Point and Trav
                           Act, city-based Traveller Communities and
a group of settled women. To celebrate
her residency, we are developing a
series of short films featuring highlights
                           from Róisín’s residency and available
on our website in June 2019.

‘’I never knew how to make a Beady Pocket
before and it was great to discover that my
granny had made some in the past... It was
great to learn how to sew and to get all of
these women together and I think it should
 definitely continue.’’
