Burrows like to reflect on some incredible happenings at our House in 2019. Dominic C. Canuso, CFA Robert A. Cocozzoli • We have been a “home-away-from-home” for 1,322 families: families just like Janker Limaico’s, whose Pauline M. Corso story is featured in this issue of Our House. Six-year-old Janker came all the way from Quito, Ecuador Rich Doane with his family for life-saving cancer treatment at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children. Barbara Dukart He has been at the House, thousands of miles from home, for almost ten months. Stories like Janker’s Joel E. Dukart speak to the strength of our families, and the figurative and literal distances they go to ensure the Tony Hill health and happiness of their loved ones. Vijay Iyengar, M.D. Christopher S. Marshall • In June, we received an RMHC Remarkable Impact Grant thanks to AbbVie, allowing us to transform Raymond Parisi, Jr. an existing space in order to implement a multi-sensory support program. Seelhorst and autism-spectrum disorder and their families. Bob Trostel Marichu C. Valencia • September was a busy month for fundraising and special events for the House. Our 31st Annual Golf Event raised over $230,000, which is nearly 10% of our annual operating budget and enough to Advisory Council provide 3,194 overnight stays for families in need. This energetic event brought in over 400 participants and raised over $32,000. Perry S. Beberman Mary E. “Together, We Have Become Stronger” Limaico Ibadango Family Story Mayra and Diego say that meeting new people at the House has helped them feel welcome and comfortable. They have become good friends with several other families, noting a special experience when another guest family shared special homemade bread with them, and then taught them how to make it. In addition to making new friends, the family of three has also become much closer to each other. “Before coming here, we always had family at home to help us,” Mayra and Diego shared, “Family would help us to make decisions.” They told us that without their extended family close by, the three of them have learned how to overcome obstacles as a smaller family unit. W hen six-year-old Janker Limaico Ibadango (nickname Sebastian) was diagnosed with Type B Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, an aggressive form of blood cancer, his treatment began in his home city of Quito, Ecuador. When this initial treatment was not proving as successful as Sebastian’s parents hoped, the family faced difficult decisions. Doctors were recommending a bone marrow transplant, a procedure that Sebastian’s parents had heard about, but were very nervous in pursuing for their son. To add to their anxieties, when Sebastian’s doctors shared that the chemotherapy had worked, Sebastian was eligible for a transplant, and they were able to get that transplant in the United States, “Together, we have become stronger.” parents Diego and Mayra were overwhelmed, but joyful. “It was like winning the lottery,” Mayra shared, “We had so For the Limaicio Ibadango family, being able to be together at the many setbacks that we were starting to lose hope.” Ronald McDonald House has made their journey “a good experience” that allowed them to get the care they needed for Sebastian. On Now facing their son’s intimidating medical procedure and having to October 1, Sebastian was discharged from the hospital and cleared to travel thousands of miles to a different country, far from their family go home after almost 9 months. He and his parents were thrilled to support system, the Limaico Ibadango family faced a major life ring our Good News Bell and share the great news. decision with worry and fear. But then, Mayra connected with a family in Quito who told her that her family had traveled to Delaware for medical treatment and stayed at the Ronald McDonald House. The mom told Mayra, “You have nothing to worry about. The Ronald McDonald House not only put a roof over our heads, but provided shuttles to run errands, meals, and a kitchen that allowed me to cook for my son. You will feel at home.” Hearing this helped Sebastian’s family feel confident in making the decision to travel to the U.S. for treatment, and on January 8, 2019, the family checked into the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware. At the House, the family has found a calm “home-away-from-home” for the past 10 months, where they can be together, play, cook, and enjoy family meals. When he’s not at the hospital, Sebastian loves to be at the House- riding his bike, playing soccer, visiting the park with mom and dad, and playing with his favorite Legos.
