EDITORIAL # 5 Making our presence felt Dear readers, If you have a kitchen delivered, you can usually start cooking as soon as the kitchen is installed. Once the fitters are done with their work, the customers can admire and try out their new kitchen straight away. Ideally, this creates an immediate positive user experience for them. Things are slightly different with CARLISLE® CM Europe. If a flat roof, façade or building has been completely waterproofed, there is usually nothing left to be seen of our EPDM products. Hidden in the ground or beneath a stylish green roof, they still fulfil their task of protecting the building envelope. So what about the user experience? Well, it certainly is a positive one if the roof is reliably watertight. But is that an actual experience shaped by the intense emotions involved? And aren’t these emotions brought about only by seeing, touching and experiencing a product? We, however, still wish to be visible, perceptible and approachable; we wish to make our presence felt to you in a positive and memorable way. As our Bruno Bauer American colleagues would put it, we want you to ‘get the CARLISLE® expe- Director of Engineering at CARLISLE® rience’. With this in mind, allow me to welcome you to this new issue of our Construction Materials GmbH magazine BLACKPRINT, which, of course, is inline with our motto: ‘Experience the CARLISLE® Difference!’. M any towns and municipalities are becom- ing increasingly aware of the potential offered by centrally located, former industrial and commercial spaces, which are then mostly converted into office and residential districts in the course of large-scale urban development projects. Well-known examples in Germany include the HafenCity in Hamburg and the Überseestadt in Bremen. On Amsterdam’s western waterfront, what was once the Houthaven (English: lumber port) is undergoing a similar transformation from an industrial location into a popular waterside resi- dential district. Where tree trunks were once loaded onto freighters, a vibrant urban district is now under construction. Around 2,500 flats, 70 berths for houseboats, plus schools, restaurants and cafés will be built by 2020.
