The Gheralta mountains in Tigray Province are not only visually stunning but are also home to over 30 churches hewn into the rocky mountainsides. Built at altitude to bring pilgrims closer to heaven and to be hidden from raiding armies that might head through valleys and villages, their location off the beaten track has ensured that few visitors have enjoyed the art and beauty of these constructions, or the pathways to reach them. This stunning adventure also includes an introduction to bustling Addis Ababa, and a tour around the holy town of Lalibela, home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site’s 13th Century churches (commonly referred to as The Eighth Wonder of the World) and a centre of Pilgrimage. From here we set off to remote Gheralta mountains, for a stunning and unique 5 day trek, camping with panoramic views, and meeting friendly local villagers and learning about their culture.
