JUNIOR SURF “NIPPERS” 2021-2022 SEASON Welcome new and returning families to the start of Junior Surf/Nippers season at Wainui SLSC. We hope to have another great season so please enjoy our wonderful beach and facilities. Junior Surf is a great way for children to make friends, be active and learn how to enjoy the beach safely. As an island nation, teaching our kids how to respect the water and learn water safety and lifesaving skills, is a no-brainer! Nippers first learn about surf awareness and beach safety with fun as the priority. As they progress through the various age groups, they pick up surf lifesaving and sport skills. At the age of 13, our nippers have the opportunity to take part in the Rookie Lifeguard Programme, which is an introductory step into lifeguarding. Rookie Lifeguards are asked to do patrols alongside a mentor, learning what it takes to become a surf lifeguard in a safe and enjoyable way. There is also the opportunity to participate in our Surf Lifesaving Sport carnivals which offer numerous beach and water (beach and pool) focused activities. These events are tailored specific to age group, and are a lot of fun for the entire family. This is all done in a safe and supportive club environment. There is a lot of information in this handbook but we hope it will provide you with much of what you'll need for the season ahead. Please keep checking our club communications systems – Facebook Wainui Surf Lifesaving Club, regular emails and website www.wainuislsc.co.nz for updates throughout the summer.
WHAT WE OFFER Junior Surf/Nippers at Wainui is all about enjoyment, participation and confidence building. The skills our coaches pass on will encourage juniors to develop their abilities in and around the ocean enabling them to become confident, aware, and above all safe with a healthy respect for the ocean and its changing conditions. Key Objectives for Junior Surf at Wainui are: 1. To provide the best possible life saving experience for all juniors with the view to encouraging long-term active participation. 2. To provide opportunities for juniors to actively participate in and enjoy life saving and competition in an aquatic environment. 3. To ensure our junior members are safe on New Zealand’s beaches through building knowledge and experiences in the Junior Surf programme. 4. To develop a team based philosophy encompassing leadership, camaraderie, teamwork, and fun. 5. To promote social, emotional and physical growth and development in a healthy and safe environment. REGISTRATIONS AND SUBSCRIPTIONS Nipper registrations and start of the season 9.30am Sunday 14th November 2021. Registrations and memberships will be taken on the day. Membership Fees Junior Surf/Nippers Member (3-13 yrs): $40.00 Family Membership (All family members): $165.00 Junior Competitive (10-14 years, attending training) $65.00 Associate Member (Social, non-competitive) $30.00 SUNDAY JUNIOR SURF/NIPPERS DAY Our Junior Surf season this year will run from 14th November 2021 until 6th March 2022. There will be a short break over the Christmas period. TIME: Sunday morning 10.00 – 11.00am. An attendance register (roll) is marked every Sunday. This is a key health and safety requirment so parents, please ensure your child is marked on the roll every day you attend, even if you arrive late. Everyone must sign out prior to leaving the beach as this is part of our Water Safety Plan.
Once you have signed in, please get your age group colured cap and a blue rash top. All Nippers must wear a long sleeve blue rash top and coloured cap as part of our safety and sun smart policy. A head count is carried out at the beginning of each session for each group and throughout the duration of the session. Please ensure you advise the Age Group Coach if you are leaving the session before its completion so that your child/children are signed out and that all participants are signed out at the end of each session. It is a mandatory requirement that we must have 1 adult for every 5 children (1:5) for all water activities. That ratio drops for the 5 & under group to 1:1. If it is not obtained we will be unable to enter the water. Parental assistance is crucial! AGE GROUPS The Surf Lifesaving New Zealand Junior Surf Programme is designed for young people aged 7-14 yrs. But here at Wainui we have extended the age to include all family members. All surf lifesaving clubs are volunteer and non-profit making organisations and the only way we can function effectively is for you to take an active role. The roles we need help with are: 1. Nipper Age Group Coaches Ideally, we would like to have at least 3 Age Group Coaches per age group. As you can see from the coaches list, some group only have 1 or 2 coaches. Our coach ratio is for safety and to take the load of 1 individual coach. It also enables us to better manage smaller groups and assists our coaches in working together to ensure there is always someone present to lead their group on a Sunday morning. This is a fun and positive way to be involved with your club and children. Along with your own good ideas for fun games & activities we'll supply you with all the information and equipment you'll need to fill in an hour on the beach on a Sunday morning.
2. Surf Officials For our junior athletes that wish to compete at carnivals this season, there is a national official ratio which must be met by all clubs. This means for every 10 athletes there must be 1 official (1:10). For example, if Wainui has 30 junior competitors at a carnival we require at least 3 Wainui parents/officials prepared to help out on the beach. SLSNZ runs Surf Official courses throughout the season. More information about these courses and what’s involved can be found here: https://www.surflifesaving.org.nz/sport/official-coach- development/official-courses. Please ask how you can become involved. This it's a great way to learn the rules of surf sports, what’s involved in setting up and running an event, gives you the best spot on the beach to support our juniors and watch the action up close. 3. Safety support and beach help. We need you either in the water or on the beach watching our Nippers at all times. Please never leave the beach or leave your children in the hands of others. It’s extremely important to keep an eye on what's happening or join in with the groups when they're enjoying water activities. Don’t be afraid to bring a wetsuit and hop in with the kids – the coach will love you for it! If you arrive early, please help to get gear and uniforms placed outside and ready for the day. When the session is over, please assist us to get gear from the beach, cleaned and safely packed away. .
JUNIOR SPORT CARNIVALS For those Junior Surf members who want to represent the club and compete in Sport events, there are a number of carnivals and competitions held throughout the local season. There are also events in other regions throughout NZ. For members 10 years of age and over, there is an added national competition, Oceans. This is the Under 14 Surf Lifesaving National Championships held at the beginning of March each year. Additional training during the week and during the summer school holidays is available for all members wishing to compete at this national event. Training is done under the guidance of our Club's Head Coach, Dion Williams. Age groups for this are determined by the age of a junior on 30th September 2021, e.g. a child who is 9 on 10th September will participate in U10 at Junior Surf Events. Age groups eligible to compete in Junior Surf Carnivals are U8 – U14. Rookie Lifeguard: Be 13yrs at 1st October 2021 – preparation pathway for Junior participants working towards their Surf Lifeguard Award (SLA). More info about Rookies can be found here www.surflifesaving.org.nz/lifesaving/junior-surf/rookie-lifeguard-programme
CARNIVAL INFORMATION All Wainui competitors must be correctly attired in Wainui swimwear, Hi Vis vest and Wainui club cap. Be prepared - carnival days are much longer than a standard Nippers session and often involve down time. Ensure you have sufficient food, drink, sunscreen, shelter, and warm dry clothing/towels/ or even blankets if need be. All junior members who wish to use foam or fiberglass paddleboards and/or swim beyond waist depth must pass their 200m safety test. This is a mandatory safety requirement which demonstrates that junior members are confident in the ocean and capable of returning to shore if they are separated from their equipment. Junior members must have the badge fixed to their togs or club cap. Parents will be required to manage individual age groups and provide the official/athlete ratio at all carnivals and with other tasks such as loading and cleaning gear. We hope to use our expert event managers at the big carnivals to ensure Wainui stays on top in the competition arena. Ocean Athletes U11 to U14 The Oceans focussed programme is there to develop athletes while ensuring they are integrated into the Surf Lifesaving movement and become lifeguards. It will provide the best possible environment for our young athletes to develop and grow and targets all major competitions including the annual NZ Ocean Athletes competition. This is for the Intermediate & Development Surf age groups only (U11 – U14) and requires a reasonable level of skill and commitment. 200M SWIM STANDARD Please ensure your child can swim or is in a swimming lesson. Any Junior wishing to use a foam or fibreglass paddle board whether U9, U10, Intermediate Surf or as part of the Oceans Training Squad must pass their 200 metre swim test to be able to participate in the advanced water activities and in any competition with their age group. The 200m standards are: U9 yrs and U10 yrs Pool swim – 200 meters (under 7 mins) and tread water for 1 minute U11 yrs Pool swim – 200 meters (under 5 mins) and tread water for 1 minute U12 – U14 yrs Pool swim – 200 meters (under 4 ½ mins) and tread water for 1 minute
The 200metre swim qualification must be refreshed at the start of every season. A session will be held at the Olympic Pool to run through these requirements. Junior and Intermediate Surf programmes are not designed to teach your child to swim. If your child’s swimming is not to a level where they would be safe in the water then parents need them to get them to that level via swimming lessons and ensure they are not extending themselves beyond their capability. It is crucial that all children feel safe and confident in the water in order to fully enjoy our Junior Surf experience. OVERVIEW OF COMPETITION EVENTS Beach sprint – This is a straight running race. U8 - U10 run 50m, U11 – U12 run 70m and U13 – U14 run 90m. Beach relay (all age groups) – Teams of 4 (2 at each end of the course), run same distance as Beach Sprints. Team members run carrying a baton and pass to the next team member. Each baton must be received behind the line and if any part of the body crosses the line before the baton has changed the team will be disqualified. If the baton is dropped, it can be picked up and the team continues. Beach flags (all age groups) – This is a sprint up the beach to claim a baton. There will always be fewer batons than competitors; the competitor who does not get a baton is eliminated from the competition. All competitors lie face down with toes on the start line, heels together, hands on top of each other and head up facing out to sea. On the command “heads down” chins are placed on the hands and competitors must stay still. At the whistle competitors get to their feet as quickly as they can and run to get a baton. There is only one false start allowed, so the next competitor to false start is eliminated.
Run-wade-run (U8 – U10) – This is a beach/water event. Competitors run from the starting line on the beach into the water then wade out and around two markers and back into shore where they sprint to cross the finish line. Some competitions do not offer this event for U10’s. Run-swim-run (U10 – U14) –This is a beach/water event. Competitors run from the starting line on the beach into the water, then swim out and around two markers and back into shore, where they sprint to cross the finish line. Surf race (U10 – U14) – This is a swimming race. The course length varies by age-group but will be no longer than 200m. All competitors must have completed their 200m badge. Competitors usually swim left to right around the course and return to shore to sprint across the finishing line. Boogie board race (U8 – U10) – The race starts at the water’s edge with each competitor’s board leash attached to their arm. They race out and around two markers and back into shore. Competitors must cross the finish line in contact with their board. No fins are required. Some competitions do not offer this event for U10’s. Board race (U10 – U14) - This is a kneeboard race. Competitors start at the water’s edge holding their board. Then, they race out into the water on the starter's whistle, paddle out and around three markers, and back into shore to the finish line. Competitors must cross the line in contact with their board. If a competitor loses their board after the last buoy/marker, they can swim the remainder of the course. Board relay (U10 – U14) – Same rules as for the Board Race but with teams of 3. The first team member completes the water course and tags the next team member, not their board. The final team member must cross the finishing line in contact with their board. Diamond race (U8 – U14) – This is a multi-discipline event. The order of events is swim, board, run. The competitor swims out, and around two markers return to the beach and pick up their board. They return to the water, paddle out and around the markers, returning to the beach, dropping their board at the flags then sprint to the finishing line. Cameron relay (U8 – U14) – This is a multi-discipline team event. The order of events is the same as the diamond race but done in a team of 3. The first competitor swims out, and around two markers, return to the beach and tags the paddler who runs to the water and paddles out and around the markers, returning to the water’s edge, tagging their runner who then sprints to the finishing line. Tube rescue (U13 – U14) Teams consist of a patient and rescuer. First, the patient lines up at the start between their flags. Then, on the starter’s whistle, they swim out to their buoy. On reaching the buoy, the patient places a hand on the top of the buoy and raises their other hand. On seeing the signal from the patient, the rescuer, who stands on the seaward side of the start line, runs up the beach to get the rescue tube and fins. These are put on as soon as the rescuer is ready, and they then swim out to the buoy.
The rescuer swims left to right around the buoy, clipping in the patient behind the buoy. The patient can help clip on the tube before they cross the buoy line and swim into shore. The patient must remain on their back w h i l e b e i n g t o w e d and assist by kicking and/or sculling underwater. The rescuer removes their fins when they are in shallow water, and the team runs up the beach to finish in between their flags. Board rescue (U13 – U14) – Teams consist of a swimmer and a paddler. On the starter’s whistle, the swimmer races out to their allocated buoy; on arrival, signals that assistance is required. The paddler begins at the swimmer’s signal. On reaching the swimmer, the paddler rounds the buoy from left to right, picks up the swimmer, making sure that they are on the seaward side of the buoy. Then the team jointly paddles back to shore. The paddler and swimmer run to cross the finishing line with both competitors in contact with the board. EQUIPMENT POLICY Wainui SLSC provides as much equipment as it can to juniors for training and competition. All juniors who regularly use gear and take advantage of coaching services outside of Sundays are required to pay the training fee of $50 in addition to their normal subscription. This to help with equipment purchase, repair, safety and coaching costs. Some principles that must be adhered to with regards to club gear include: You must have your 200M swim badge qualification to use any foam or fibreglass board Don’t use damaged equipment and check for damage prior to use Report any damaged equipment to your coaches immediately Never stack boards on top of each other Always carry boards (don’t drag!) and no surfing onto the beach Soft boards for use of U12 only unless permission given Allocated fibreglass boards only to be used by ‘owner’ as designated by coaches General use boards are marked and can be used by any qualified member or assisting parent Always wash gear and put away tidily
