Blackheath Junior Section in 2020 Blackheath has a very popular junior section of well over 300 boys and girls, with waiting lists for nearly every squad. In 2020 we will have a team of 5 professional coaches, as well as numerous qualified volunteer coaches and squad managers. In addition to our Friday evening coaching sessions and family BBQs for all age groups, we will continue to offer midweek coaching for hard-ball squads and individual coaching for all those who want it. Aside from our beautiful main ground at Blackheath, in the coming season we will have the benefit of a fantastic new facility at Grafham, our recently-acquired second ground, where major improvements are being made over the winter thanks to generous grant funding from Sport England and the London Marathon Charitable Trust. The main beneficiaries of this will be our girls’ section, in which we are investing heavily with additional coaching support, facilities and equipment. As explained below, we have also made major changes to our winter coaching programme this year, with all training sessions now taking place on Friday evenings (except for the U15/U14 boys’ squad, who will train on Sunday mornings). We have also introduced a girls’ winter coaching programme. Boys’ cricket Our ethos is to provide both high standard competitive cricket and inclusive cricket, so as to ensure that every boy gets the opportunity to play in matches at the appropriate level. For all the boys’ age groups from U9s up to U15s we will be running both A and B teams in the new Surrey Junior Cricket Championship (SJCC). Our U8s will also play matches in the SJCC soft-ball league. Though our U7s and U6s do not play league matches, we plan to organise at least one tournament. 3
In the coming season, nearly all our boys’ A teams will be playing at the highest available level against some of the top teams in the county. Our U15s/U14s will be playing in the U15 Surrey Junior Invitational League. Most of our other A teams are playing in Tier 1 of the SJCC at the relevant age group. Our B teams will be playing in either Tier 2 or Tier 3, as appropriate. This summer there will be at least 20 league fixtures in each boys’ age group (in most age groups there will be additional cup fixtures and/or friendlies). Home fixtures will be played not only at Blackheath but also at Grafham and Duke of Kent School. Fixtures will mostly be played on Sunday mornings, although some of the youngest squads will play on Saturday mornings and there will also be some midweek games. There will also be tours for some of the boys’ squads. The main summer training sessions for all age groups will be starting on Friday 24 April 2020 at Blackheath, with the usual family BBQs each week. Planned session times are as follows: U6s from 4.15pm until 5.15pm; U7s-U10s from 5.15pm or 5.30pm until 6.30pm; U11s-U15s from 6.30pm to 8pm. As last year, all hard-ball squads will also have the option of separate midweek net sessions during the summer, and the U15s are also welcome to train alongside the adults on Wednesday evenings. Our boys’ winter training programme will be starting on Friday 10 January at Longacre School (U8-U9s) and Charterhouse Club (U10s-U13) or Sunday 12 January at Charterhouse Club (U15s/U14s): see page 7. There will also be pre- season training camps in the Easter holidays. 4
Girls’ cricket Our girls’ section has grown rapidly over the past few years and in 2019 numbered around 60 girls. A further significant expansion is planned in 2020, made possible by the redevelopment over the winter of the Grafham ground and pavilion, which will be re-opening in April as the new home of our Women & Girls’ Section: see our Grafham Project page. In 2020, the girls will be divided into 4 squads. The two oldest squads will both be playing league matches: the U14/U12 squad in the U14 Surrey Hardball Development League and the U11/U10 squad in the Surrey SmashIt League. The U9/U8 squad will be playing in several festivals and we expect to arrange at least one tournament for the U7/U6 squad, a newly-formed squad for our youngest girls. Girls’ matches will usually be played on Sunday afternoons and home matches will normally be played at Grafham. As with the boys, the main training sessions for all the girls’ age groups will be on Friday evenings starting on Friday 24 April 2020. However, this summer all these training sessions will take place at the redeveloped Grafham ground, where (as at Blackheath) the bar will be open and we will be running a family BBQ every Friday. Planned session times are: U7/U6 and U9/U8 squads from 5.30pm to 6.30pm; U11/U10 and U14/U12 squads from 6.30pm to 8pm. The U14-U12 girls will also have the option of an additional midweek training session. We will also be running a girls’ winter training programme this year, on Friday evenings at St Catherine’s School starting on 10 January: see page 7. 5
Our coaching team We have a very strong and experienced coaching team, led by our head coach, Chris Poil. In 2020, the team will include no fewer than 5 professional coaches: our Women & Girls’ Manager, Sharon Eyers of Middlesex CCC; our two Surrey coaches, Ronny and Danny Harrison; our overseas player/coach, Angus Hamilton, and a new experienced local coach, Tom Selby. There will be at least one professional coach allocated to each boys’ and girls’ squad this summer, working together with our numerous qualified volunteer coaches and squad managers. Individual coaching Individual and 1:2 coaching sessions are available to junior members throughout the year from one of our professional coaches. Sessions take place at the club or during the winter months at an indoor facility. The cost is £25 per hour (whether 1:1 or 1:2), plus the cost of hiring the indoor facility. To book, please contact ronny@matchfitacademy.com. Other activities Aside from training programmes and matches, the coaching team also runs various other activities, including half term and summer holiday cricket camps. These are open to both boys and girls at appropriate age groups. 6
2020 Winter Coaching Programme Although we understand that not everyone will be able to attend winter coaching sessions, we hope that as many as possible will do so. Sessions are particularly recommended for those aspiring to A team cricket. To sign up for winter coaching, simply tick the relevant box in the online registration process. U15s/U14 boys’ squad In 2020, the U15/U14s will again be invited to winter train at the same time as the club’s men’s section on Sunday mornings 10am-11am, between 12 January and 5 April. This year the sessions will be at the Charterhouse Club in Godalming (GU7 2RS). The cost will be £50 for all 13 sessions, or £5 per session. U13, U12, U11 and U10 boys’ squads This year we have changed our winter coaching programme for the U13-U10 boys’ squads, which will be taking place at Charterhouse Club (GU7 2RS) on Friday evenings 6.15pm-7.45pm, between 10 January 2020 and 27 March 2020 (excluding 21 February and 20 March). We have hired the entire sports hall, which includes 4 nets and a large separate training space. In general, the U13 and U12 squads will use one half of the hall while the U11 and U10 squads use the other, so all 4 squads can divide their time between the nets and other drills and activities. The cost will be £60 for all 10 sessions. Parents should note that if they would like to use the facilities of Charterhouse Club (including the gym and the pool) during the boys’ training sessions, they may do so by joining Charterhouse Club, which is offering special discounted membership rates to Blackheath members: see next page. U9 and U8 boys’ squads Winter training for our U8s and U9s boys’ squads will take place at Longacre School in Shamley Green (GU5 0NQ) on Friday evenings 4.30-5.30pm between January and 27 March (excluding 28 February and 20 March). The cost will be £40 for all 10 sessions. U14/U12 and U11/U10 girls’ squad For the first time this year, we are running a winter training programme for our U1U14/U12 and U11/U10 girls’ squads. This will take place at St Catherine’s School in Bramley (GU5 0DF) on Friday evenings 6.15pm-7.30pm between 10 January and 27 March excluding 21 February and 6 March, and will be run by our Women & Girls’ Manager, Sharon Eyers, assisted by a second professional coach. The cost will be £50 for all 10 sessions. 7
Registration As in previous years, there are waiting lists for most age groups, so registration will take place in 2 stages. First, there is a members’ priority window, which ends on Sunday 5 January 2019. Thereafter, those on waiting lists will be contacted and offered any available places. Registration is done online via the club website (www.blackheathcc.co.uk). To re-register a child who was a member in 2019: Click on “Members” and enter either your Username or email address and Password you used last year (or follow the prompts to reset your Password). This will take you to your personal Dashboard, where you should select the child under “You & Your Family”. To add the sibling of an existing member to our waiting list: Log in as above and under “You & Your Family” click on “Add Junior”. To add your child to our waiting list if your family is new to Blackheath: Click on “Members” then “New Family?” and follow the instructions. If your child is already on our waiting list: We will contact you to explain the next steps. If in doubt, contact Sue Brocksom (suehodgson1@btinternet.com).
