JULY 11 Starting on Sunday, July 11th, we will be returning to doing two worship services again. At this time we will resume doing a traditional worship service in the sanctuary. The worship time will be at 8 a.m. We will do our contemporary service at 9:30 a.m. in the Family Life Center. We will also begin doing our fellowship time again on this date from 9:00 a.m.-9:30 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall. For Sunday school, our preschool and children’s classes will be meeting at 9:30 a.m. during the contemporary worship service. Peter Wells will also be leading an adult Sunday school class at 9:30 a.m. Our youth class and Tim Swanson’s adult Sunday school class will be meeting after the contemporary worship service. Nursery will be provided for both worship services and Sunday school. We will also continue to show services online. The contem- porary service will be shown on Facebook Live at 9:30 a.m., and the sermon will continue to be shown on YouTube. As we make these changes, I want to take a moment to explain why we are making the changes we are making. First, and foremost, we are strategically trying to more effectively make disciples of Jesus Christ. This is our mission. This is why we are in existence. We believe the changes we are making will better help us in doing this. With this in mind, we are trying to give people more options. We will provide an early worship at 8 a.m. to reach those who desire an early worship time with traditional worship in the sanctuary. We will do a contemporary worship service in the Family Life Center at 9:30 a.m. for those who enjoy contemporary worship and the atmosphere of worshiping there. Why have we chosen 9:30 a.m. for the time for this service? We learned a couple of things as we have worshipped together in recent months. One of the things that we learned while having just one service was that people liked being able to see everyone. Before COVID, people who worshiped at the traditional service often never saw others who attended the contemporary service and might not have even met one another. With this in mind, we are going to do our fellowship time from 9:00 a.m.-9:30 a.m., so everyone will have the opportunity to fellowship with everyone in the congregation regardless of whether they attend the traditional service or the contemporary service. We also learned that the 9:00 worship time was a popular time to worship. While we are not going to be doing the contemporary service at 9:00 a.m. but instead at 9:30 a.m., we believe that more people will likely attend an earlier contemporary service at 9:30 a.m. than at 10:45 a.m. like we did before. To make this work, we had to change our Sunday school times. We thought it was crucial to have something in place for our children during the time of our contemporary worship service. Now that we have a new worship space in place for contemporary worship, to reach younger families we must also be able to minister to their children as well. This should enable us to do this more effectively, and hopefully, increase the number of children attending Sunday school. With our youth, we have chosen to do their class after the contemporary service which they are more likely to attend. We are providing two adult Sunday school class options, so that adults can attend Sunday school regardless of which worship service they attend. Now, as we make these changes, we realize that change is generally not easy and something we often do not like. There will be minor inconveniences and not everyone’s preferences will be met. However, I encourage you to embrace the changes we are making. Change also brings excitement and can enable us to grow. I want us all to think about this one question, “Are each of us willing to welcome change at church, so the church can grow?” Our goal always should be about pleasing Jesus Christ and not ourselves. Until we get to heaven, neither at church nor anywhere else in life, will we ever get everything that we desire. When we think of the fact that Jesus Christ gave his life for our salvation, dealing with minor inconveniences or letting go of our personal preferences are a small price to pay for the Kingdom of God. I encourage you to think of how important it is to you to see your children, grandchildren, or great grandchildren know Jesus. We are attempting to build a church where that can happen, but it does require some sacrifices on our part. True worship always costs us something. Will you pay that cost so more people can become disciples of Jesus Christ? Blessings, Pastor Jon
Dear Family, At knights of North Castle VBS, your child will enjoy an interactive, energizing, Bible-based good time as they go on a quest in search of the King's Armor. They will become Knights and discover how to serve God and God’s mission for their lives. After a high-energy opening assembly time, the Knights make their way to the Bible Story Station. Interactive Bible lessons reveal Castle Callouts to equip your Knights for an active life with God. Your Knights will discover a Banner Verse (Bible memory verse) that will remain with them in their faith long after VBS. The students will expand on what they’ve discovered by participating in a variety of activities: making their own art projects, singing new songs, playing games and enjoying snacks. Along the way the Knights will hear about our mission project. Join us at Sherman United Methodist Church on July 26, 2021 through July 30, 2021 from 6:30 pm to 8:15 pm.
