The University cannot accept legal parental responsibility for students on a course of study whilst still under 18. This remains with their parents or guardians in relation to final responsibility for health, welfare and financial liability. In relation to living accommodation, the University’s student halls of residence meet the specific standards that are now considered to be a legal requirement to provide for those aged under 18. The Department of Health produced a set of National Minimum Standards entitled 'Accommodation of Students under Eighteen by Further Education Colleges' and places an obligation upon colleges to adhere to these published standards. The University has adopted these National Minimum Standards, which are overseen by OFSTED. Only resident students aged under 18 can gain access to the dedicated secure accommodation areas using electronic key card technology. If students aged under 18 wish to live off campus after Phase 1, they will need to arrange their own accommodation privately that meets their own and their parents’ / guardians’ specific requirements. We are able to provide advice and guidance on this process; however, we are not able to find or recommend alternative accommodation for students. 16. General notes a) You are strongly advised to insure your personal effects. b) You are also advised that all articles of clothing should have some kind of permanent marking, such as nametapes (outfitters may be prepared to attach these if asked). c) Bed linen and towels are not provided. d) Electric shaver sockets are provided. e) Cadets are expected to launder their own clothes regularly. Washing and drying machines are available in the accommodation blocks and you will be given a laundry top-up card to use. Credit can be added to the card online using debit/credit cards. f) Boiler suits must be clearly and neatly marked with their owner’s name above the left hand breast pocket. g) A laptop would be useful for assignments and project work. There is Internet access in the accommodation blocks. h) The clothing and general checklists above represent a guideline only and you may wish to include additional items. Cadets are expected to keep their clothes in good order and to replace items as necessary. 6 WMA Admissions December 2018
