The American Library in Paris Posted 12 May 2022 Position Available: Assistant Children’s and Teens’ Services Librarian (CDI) Start Date: Tuesday 2 August 2022 The American Library in Paris seeks a full-time Assistant Children’s and Teens’ Services Librarian (36 hours per week) with strong cataloging and subject analysis skills, primarily for materials for children and teens. As part of the Children’s and Teens’ Services team, under the supervision of the Children’s and Teens’ Services Manager, the selected candidate will support the smooth operation of the department, and will be responsible for cataloging materials for our young members. This position requires the ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written English. In order to provide the highest-quality service to children and families, the American Library in Paris seeks to hire a candidate who has undertaken specialized coursework and/or on-the-job training with a focus on services for children and teens. Organization The American Library in Paris, established in 1920, is the largest English-language lending library on the European continent. The Library welcomes more than 80,000 visitors a year and provides access to 100,000 books and thousands of periodicals, as well as a wide range of literary and cultural programs for readers of all ages. It operates as a non-profit association with 501(c)3 status in the United States and as an association loi 1901 in France. Candidates should bear in mind that as a non-profit organization, the American Library in Paris’s salary structure does not match equivalents in the private sector, although the benefits of working for this unique, historic, and dynamic institution are considerable. Position Schedule ● Sundays 13h00–19h00 ● Mondays 10h00–17h00 ● Tuesdays-11h00–20h00 ● Wednesday–Thursdays 10h00–19h00
Position Description As part of the Children’s and Teens’ Services team, under the supervision of the Children’s and Teens’ Services Manager, the selected candidate will fulfill the below responsibilities to ensure the smooth operation of the Children’s and Teens’ Services Department. Applicants must have experience and training sufficient in scope and quality to furnish them with an acceptable level of the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the position without more than normal supervision. This includes, but is not limited to: Cataloging and Collection Development ● Cataloging a variety of materials in an automated cataloging environment. ● Supporting plans for improvements to cataloging-related issues. ● Streamlining cataloging process when appropriate. ● Assigning headings and classification numbers to catalog entries . ● Advising on emerging cataloging/metadata schema to facilitate access. ● Participating in discussions relating to discovery, access, retrieval, and management of information, materials, and digital repository systems. ● Processing purchase orders. ● Completing assignments related to collection development support. ● Participating in discussions of changes and improvements to collection development policies. ● Technical processing of books, magazines, audiobooks. ● Gathering collection and programming data, and organizing department archives. ● General collection maintenance tasks for materials for children and teens. Readers’ Services—Children and Teens ● Staffing the Children’s and Teens’ Services desk. ● Responding to email, phone, and in-person queries. ● Familiarizing new members with the Library and the use of its services. ● Assisting members in accessing print and online resources. ● Responding to readers' advisory questions. ● Nurturing the habit of reading for recreation. ● Creating and supplementing attractive and timely book displays for children and teens. ● Assisting with shelving, book displays, and stacks maintenance. ● Shelving and shelf reading. Events and Outreach—Children and Teens ● Providing support for programming for children and teens. ● Hosting programs for children and teens ● Assisting with the Library’s social media outreach efforts for children and teens. ● Creating passive programming for children and teens. ● Planning and implementing team activities including: workflow procedures, team priorities, cataloging projects of an experimental nature, goal setting, and strategies for meeting team production goals. ● Training and supervision of the departments 30+ volunteers and interns. Qualifications The ideal candidate will have a deep appreciation for English-language literature for children and teens, and experience working with children and/or teens in a library. Fluency in written and spoken English is essential; in spoken French, highly desirable. The American Library in Paris prides itself on outstanding patron service, and the Children’s and Teens’ Services team highly values collegiality and collaboration. Candidates should bring a record of experience in libraries and/or customer service. Organizational skills and attention to detail and process is essential, as are patience, good listening skills, and discretion. The successful candidate will also have: ● Valid European working papers. ● Master’s degree in Library Science or commensurate experience (students currently working towards a degree will also be considered). ● Excellent communication skills. ● Extremely strong interpersonal skills. ● Proven organizational skills. ● An appetite for hard work and the ability to prioritize and multitask in a close-knit and busy organizational environment. ● The ability to push full book carts, shelve books on high and low shelves, and carry boxes.
