John Deere FarmSight | 3 The productivity gains from the mechanisation of farm machinery are reaching a limit. There are only so many hectares a machine can cover in a day. But there are opportunities to improve productivity: better optimisation of individual machine performance. Better optimisation of logistics for more efficient harvesting and cultivation and better use of field data for analysing yields and improving decision making. All of this will help farmers to grow crops and manage their operations more effectively. So they make the most of the resources at their disposal. Not just improving productivity but farming more sustainably and helping to conserve the limited resources on our planet. It’s a new set of challenges. It calls for a different way of thinking. John Deere FarmSight.
4 | John Deere FarmSight: Evolution of farming The evolution of farming. Driven by technical innovation The increase in farming efficiency and productivity has gone hand-in-hand with the growth in world population. Although different regions of the world have evolved at different speeds, every step change in agricultural practices and productivity has been driven by technical innovation. New machinery … domestication of animals … hybridisation of plants … the development of agri-chemicals and artificial fertilisers. John Deere FarmSight is the next innovation in the development of agriculture. It brings together wireless communications and precision farming technology such as satellite guidance systems in an intuitive, easy to use way. It’s set to revolutionise farming for the 21st century. 10,000 BC 6,000 BC The first evidence of the organised sowing of wild plant seeds has The domestication of oxen in Mesopotamia leads to the first crude been associated with the fertile crescent of Western Asia, Egypt and plough – a simple wooden stick which is dragged through the topsoil. John Deere FarmSight | 7 FarmSight & Agricultural Management Solutions Many John Deere customers are already familiar with Agricultural Management Solutions (AMS). This is the range of fully integrated products and services including GreenStar receivers and displays, guidance systems and remote monitoring technology, that’s been pioneered by John Deere over the past 15 years. AMS was developed exclusively by John Deere as we recognised the productivity improvements that could be made by integrating technology directly into farming equipment. Thanks to our investment in AMS, today a single operator is able to perform multiple operations accurately and easily with complete confidence. Our AMS portfolio will continue to grow and expand in the years ahead and John Deere FarmSight builds on the AMS product range by including ‘Dealer Value-Added Services’. These services are currently being developed and are designed to help you get more from your equipment and your AMS products. They will include remote monitoring of machines, dealer-owned RTK networks, performance analysis, agronomic decision support and much more. As John Deere FarmSight develops and the know-how of your dealer grows, the range of services available to support you will increase. Just ask your dealer about their plans for value-added services.
8 | John Deere FarmSight: Machine optimisation Machine optimisation. Improving equipment productivity It’s always been difficult to know if you’re getting the full potential from your machines. Everyone has their favourite set-up and their own opinion of what’s best but how do you make any meaningful comparisons? John Deere FarmSight gives you the data you need to make informed decisions on how to get the most from your machines. Fuel, for instance, is one of the biggest running costs, but how do you know your machine is using it efficiently? With JDLink you can remotely monitor how the machine is being used (idling, transport and working in the field) and you can look at engine loadings to see how its capacity is being utilised. All of this gives you powerful insights into optimising machine settings, improving operator behaviour and pre-planning tasks for better efficiency. Service ADVISOR Remote is another powerful machine optimisation tool. Now your dealer can remotely monitor your machine, pre-plan maintenance schedules around your work routines and identify issues before they become a problem – all maximising your uptime.
John Deere FarmSight | 9 “I’ve been working with my dealer to improve fuel efficiency using JDLink. I used to keep a simple book and record the hours worked, the job and fuel used but it didn’t tell me what I really needed to know. Fuel efficiency isn’t just about how much fuel you use, it’s about how effectively you are using that fuel. I gave my dealer permission to remotely monitor my machines for a few weeks and he then took me through the figures. I’m now operating better balanced machines with more productive work rates and they’ve helped train another operator so even if I’m not behind the wheel I know they’re getting as good a result as me. When you have confidence in other operator's ability it frees you up to work on other parts of the business. That’s a knock-on effect of John Deere FarmSight. It can really change not just the way you use your machines but your whole approach to running and managing your business.”
10 | John Deere FarmSight: Logistics optimisation Logistics optimisation. Better fleet management Having the best, most efficient equipment is essential for farming productivity but it’s equally important to make sure it’s in the right place at the right time. Managing machine logistics can be a real challenge, particularly for forage or harvest contractors. Today’s forage harvesters, can cut 4,000 tonnes of silage in a day but ensuring you have enough trailers to keep it running all the time is another matter. John Deere FarmSight solutions can help make sure you have the right number and size of trailers to provide the optimum workflow for non-stop harvesting. By tracking machine movements using JDLink and controlling faster trailer loading with machine-to-machine communication tools such as Machine Sync, it can help you minimise the number of machines required for the task. It’s better for the environment too. Less unnecessary trips … reduced soil compaction … and lower fuel consumption. Machine Sync was awarded a silver medal for innovation at Agritechnica 2011
John Deere FarmSight | 11 “It’s always a real challenge during the harvest season to keep my combines moving without any stoppages due to delays with trailer logistics. Less stoppages mean more hectares cut and that makes a big difference to my bottom line. Machine Sync is one product that couldn’t come soon enough for me. It gives me machine-to-machine radio contact but more than that, trailer drivers can remotely read all of my combines’ grain tanks so they always know which one needs unloading first. Unloading is faster and safer too. All the trailer driver has to do is bring his tractor alongside the combine and the combine operator takes control of the tractor using Machine Sync. What’s just as important is it’s so easy to use. My operators needed hardly any training and because it’s all part of John Deere FarmSight it integrates with all my other monitoring systems, so the set up was really straightforward.”
12 | John Deere FarmSight: Ag decision support Ag decision support. Better business decisions John Deere FarmSight helps you make better, more informed decisions by pinpointing all the different input costs and variables in your operation. It also cuts down on paperwork with standard format document templates that make running your business a lot easier. Easy to use software with simple data transfer from machine to PC lets you pre-plan jobs for operators or analyse the results in the comfort of your own office when it’s convenient for you. Either do-it-yourself or your dealer can work with you to build up a picture of your business across each season. This will help give you an understanding of where it pays to invest money and where it doesn’t. When you add this to the experience your dealer has over hundreds of customers in his territory, you can benchmark your performance against other similar operations for better business performance.
John Deere FarmSight | 13 “I’m not a big fan of paperwork so the integrated set of documentation has helped make running the business a lot easier. For me it really comes into its own with yield mapping. I’ve been working with the team at my dealer to build up an accurate picture of all the factors affecting yields. Now we’re on our second harvesting season and we’re really starting to see patterns emerge which will help improve cost control. The contractor who cuts my silage also uses foragers equipped with HarvestLab. This gives me real-time measurement of all the important constituents – sugar, starch, protein and dry- matter content. So I know the quality of my silage as soon as it goes into the clamp. It lets me balance my feedstocks better and gives me the option to buy in bulk at a lower price and it helps me decide what crop variety to plant to give the best yield next season.” Constituent measurement on HarvestLab was awarded a silver medal for innovation at Agritechnica 2011
14 | John Deere FarmSight: New dealer services New dealer services. Adding customer value Thanks to John Deere FarmSight, more and more dealers are able to offer value-added services that can help you run your business more efficiently and profitably. And, it doesn’t matter if you farm livestock, dairy, arable or operate a contracting service, your business can benefit from John Deere FarmSight one way or another. It might be as simple as providing guidance systems to reduce skips and overlap when fertilising or spraying. Or it could be remote machine monitoring and diagnostics services using Service ADVISOR Remote … evaluating machine performance or machine settings with JDLink … fuel consumption analysis … or yield mapping with documentation software. With the expert knowledge and insight of your dealer, John Deere FarmSight gives you a window onto your business that you’ve never had before.
John Deere FarmSight | 15 “JDLink is an important step in helping to develop our first John Deere FarmSight value- added services. Once a customer gives us their permission to remotely monitor their machines we can analyse how they’re being used. Using this information we can provide operator training on the right machine set-ups, choice of implements and work rates to optimise individual machines. Harvest season is also another important time where we’ll be able to add real customer value. Remote monitoring of combine performance will allow us to give real-time advice on the right settings for the conditions and offer insights that can make significant improvements to the logistics of the whole operation. Even when harvesting is over, our work can still continue. We can manage the paperwork for some of our smaller customers and we can also analyse harvest data and prepare reports with yield maps. All the data is still owned by the customer but with our added experience we can help them make informed decisions on what inputs and crops to plant for the following season in a way they’ve never been able to do before.”
