The Foundation’s Investor program allows the community, both individuals and business leaders like Cane Island, to provide a sound financial platform for Foundation initiatives by committing to three years or more of support. Cane Island President Dan Naef joined the Katy ISD Education Foundation for 2019-2020 Inspiring Imagination teacher grant announcements. “It was one of the most special experiences I’ve had in Katy,” Naef said, “To be present and witness the joy in a teacher’s eyes when they win a grant and to hear the excitement in their voice, it’s priceless.” Cane Island doesn’t just build homes, it builds community. Naef said, “Nothing says community like taking care of our children and taking care of the educators who pour into our children.” The Katy ISD Education Foundation has awarded $1.6 million in its first seven years of Inspiring Imagination teacher grants, impacting students in classrooms all around the district. Funding for the program is provided in part by long-term investors like Cane Island and annual fundraising events Fireflies & Foodtrucks and GROOVE. Recipes Spaghetti Squash You could make this on National Spaghetti Day January 4th! Everyone is trying to be a little healthier these days, so instead of a pasta spaghetti, try using spaghetti squash: DIRECTIONS: 1. To start, cut your squash in half lengthwise. This is definitely the hardest part of making spaghetti squash, but with a sharp chef’s knife and some determination you’ll do just fine. 2. Remove the seeds. Drizzle the cut sides with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Flip the squash cut-side down on a baking sheet. 3. Pop it in a 400°F oven for 40 minutes. Depending on the size of your squash, this could take more like an hour. If 40 minutes have passed and you’re not sure if the squash is ready, pull it out of the oven and drag the tines of a fork on the cut side. If spaghetti-like strands easily release from the skin, it’s ready. If not, continue baking and check on it every 5 to 10 minutes. Over-roasting can lead to soggier “spaghetti,” so it’s best to keep a close eye on the squash. 4. Shred it! When it’s ready, let cool slightly before creating “spaghetti” with your fork. Top with spaghetti sauce or for an even healthier and lower calorie option, go with a marinara sauce. Single Serving Healthy Homemade Strawberry Ice Cream You could make this on National Strawberry Ice Cream Day January 15th! Ingredients 1 banana, frozen 1 cup (5-6 whole) strawberries, fresh or frozen 1/4 cup milk of choice DIrections Place all 3 ingredients in a food processor and pulse for about 1-2 minutes.
