MINOR BOUNDARY MODIFICATION
Area of property
The area to be added to the site core zone is the archaeological area known as "Sepolcreto" (Roman burial
ground); it is a small 0.1109 hectar plot of land.
- site area as registered to WHL: 155.3 hectar
- site area proposed for perimeter modification: 155.4109 hectar
Description of the modification
The minor boundary modification
suggests the inclusion of the
Sepolcreto archaeological area to
the current core zone of Aquilieia's
site. It is a really small area
compared to the core zone, that is
perfectly in line with the
Outstanding Universal Value and it
elevates its relevance considering
its archaeological importance.
The Sepolcreto inclusion expects
the addition of 0.1109 hectar in the
South-West area. In particular the
new core would begin at Via XXIV
Maggio interrupting the
boundaries on the pedestrian
section, before its junction with Via
Annia; it would then continue
westward, following the perimeter
of the current archaeological site of
Sepolcreto, which is a state
property and managed by
Fondazione Aquileia, finally
conjuncting the trace of the core
zone on Via Annia.

MINOR BOUNDARY MODIFICATION Justification for the modification The archaeological area and the patriarchal basilica represent a unique testament of a urban complex which dates back to the High Roman Empire. The World Heritage site, as it is now bounded, does not include the Sepolcreto, that is the only visitable burial ground of the whole complex. As expected from the Roman legislation, the area dedicated to the burials was placed outside the walls of Aquileia, on the now-called via XXIV Maggio, and it was first brought to light during the excavations conducted by Giovanni Brusin in 1939- 40. The sepolcreto is divided into five funerary enclosures which were each property of a family and offers a valuable witness of the different forms of burials (cremation and inhumation) dated between the first and third centuries AD. The grave goods that accompanied the burials are kept in the Archaeological Museum of Aquileia, while the burial monuments offer an interesting overview of the different declinations of funerary art: the urn, the stele, the Ara topped by a pyramid. In addition, the excavations undertaken under the direction of the Superintendent during the recent restoration works promoted by Fondazione Aquileia, have identified additional burials, about ninety, and thus have shown that the Aquileia burial ground constitutes one of the best preserved necropolis of northern Italy. In addition, to date, paleontological and paleobotanical investigations on the findings are underway. These additional studies, integrating the results of previous excavations data, will allow a further clarification of the history of Aquileia. The inclusion of the Roman necropolis helps to further clarify the criteria for which the site is included in the WHL, since the Sepolcreto represents a function of the ancient Roman city, the burial one, which is not otherwise represented by the current perimeter of the site . The area proposed for inclusion in the site also meets the requirements of integrity and authenticity: although the restoration work carried out during the 1940s have partially integrated the original stone elements, such inserts are perfectly recognizable because they are labeled with the date "1942". Contribution to the maintenance of the Outstanding Universal Value The Sepolcreto area contributes to increase the OUV of the site as it elevates the meaning of exceptional testament of High Roman Empire civilization. The current shape of the World Heritage site includes most of the ancient Roman city of Aquileia functions: the public one represented by the Forum, the thermal baths and the basilica; the commercial one represented by the port and warehouses, and the residential one of luxurious residential complexes. In addition, outside of the walls, the excavations have unearthed an amphitheater and a circus. The inclusion in the perimeter of the site of the necropolis permits to include the burial function, maintaining and expanding Pagina2

the meaning of 3rd and 4th criteria, which recognize to the archaeological site of Aquileia the role of the
most comprehensive and representative case of the High Roman Empire’s city in the Mediterranean context.
Implications for legal protection
The archaeological area of the Sepolcreto, which is the object of this Minor Boundary Modification proposal,
it's property of Demanio dello Stato Italiano (Italian State Property), so it is safeguarded ope legis from
the Code of Cultural Heritage and Landscape (article 10 of Legislative Decree 22 January 2004 n. 42.). Every
intervention on the site has to be authorised by authorities, in particular by the Superintendent of
Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape of Friuli Venezia Giulia.

MINOR BOUNDARY MODIFICATION Implications for management arrangements The area of the Sepolcreto is owned by the Italian State Property and it is managed, as all the other archaeological areas open to the public, by Fondazione Aquileia. The Management Plan for the World Heritage Site of Aquileia, which has been drafted by Fondazione Aquileia and is currently awaiting approval, comprehends the necropolis area and includes it in projects listed in the plan. As regards the management of the burial ground until today, in January 2015 Fondazione Aquileia commissioned restoration and works for the arrangement of the area; these works involved the construction of retaining walls, replacing the clogged drains, the removal of architectural barriers and the creation of a viewpoint at the end of the access path in order to enable the access to the area also to disabled visitors; the latter has been recalibrated with a ramp from the entrance gate so as to be coherent with the project of the requalification works promoted by the City of Aquileia in via XXIV Maggio. During the execution of the works it was ensured the archaeological surveillance, with the aim to detect any non-discovered burials from the previous excavations , and provide for their recovery. The results of these investigations, carried out under the scientific direction of the Superintendency, have been largely positive, with the discovery of 87 more burials, accompanied by grave goods. At the end of these investigations, after the recovery of the archaeological finds, new drainage were also arranged and the coverage of the entire area has been realized with drainage material to ensure the preservation of the remains and allow the optimum usability of the area. The restorations were completed in the summer of 2016, without any closure to the public of the archaelogical area. In this way visitors could follow the various phases of excavation and restoration and now can again easily recognize the original parts of monuments and those rebuilt in the Forties. Finally, it was realized the lighting system, which allows the striking night visit to the complex. It has been planned as a future action the purchase of a plot of land, which is currently privately owned, to provide direct connection between the Sepolcreto and the area of the Great Baths . All interventions put in act and planned for the future have the specific purpose of allowing maximum accessibility to visitors with disabilities the area of the burial ground, mitigating barriers. 1. Cenni storici
Tutti i monumenti funerari ritrovati ad Aquileia, tra cui il sepolcreto e il mausoleo, erano situati all'esterno
della cinta muraria, lungo le strade che portavano fuori dalla città secondo la legge romana che vietava le
sepolture nel centro urbano. Il sepolcreto è riferibile all'epoca compresa tra la metà del I sec. d.C. e gli inizi
del III ed è formato da una serie di cinque appezzamenti di area divisa appartenenti ad altrettante famiglie.
La prima area tombale è quella degli Stazi; al centro si erge l'imponente ara del capofamiglia posta su quattro
gradini. Nel secondo recinto, il più povero, non sono state rinvenute iscrizioni per cui non si a chi
appartenesse. La terza area tombale apparteneva alla famiglia dei Giuli e vi si può ancora leggere parte della
scritta che per regola doveva indicare le dimensioni del recinto stesso ( “in agro pedes XXX e in fronte pedes
XXIII”). Nel recinto ci sono due are: la più piccola è quella dedicata allo schiavo Venusto e la più grande ha la
cuspide decorata con simboli funerari come i delfini intrecciati al tridente di Poseidone. Il quarto recinto è
più ampio e apparteneva alla famiglia dei Trebi. I sarcofagi hanno il coperchi a doppio spiovente e addirittura
uno di essi è scolpito in modo da rappresentare il tetto di una casa fatto di tegole. Nel recinto c'è anche un
gruppo scultoreo raffigurante una donna seduta a colloquio con una bambina alata. Il quinto recinto, non
del tutto scavato, era della famiglia Cesti o di quella dei Emili.

Fratture e distacchi della malta a base cemento utilizzata per le stuccature, si ipotizza che i vari agenti atmosferici e assestamenti
del terreno abbiano collaborato all’avanzamento di degrado.
INTERVENTO CONSERVATIVO
Dopo le opportune verifiche è messe in sicurezza, l’intervento di restauro su gli elementi in graniglia è stato eseguito in
corrispondenza alla nostra relazione tecnica ( prot.058/15 del 12/08/2015 ). A seguire le metodologie adottate :
graniglie
trattamento biocida di tutte le superfici, compreso il paino di calpestio, tempo di contatto 7 giorni
eliminazione della vegetazione infestante manualmente
trattamento con biocida delle radici infestante
idrolavaggio a bassa pressione, eliminazione dello strato biologico superficiale
posa di AB57 in soluzione satura, tempo di contatto 6 / 8 ore
idrolavaggio a bassa pressione, eliminazione delle radici più tenaci ( prospetti nord e nord/est )
rifinitura delle parti più tenaci mediante azione meccanica con l’ausilio di bisturi a lama mobile e fissa
stuccature
rimozione manuale delle stuccature a base cemento
crepe profonde e malta adesa al monumento, le stuccature verranno abbassate di livello con l’ausilio di micro-martello
pulitura accurata delle crepe mediante acqua
posa di malta a base calce e inerti a granulometria variabile
posa di malta a base calce finitura ad intonazione cromatica con polvere di pietra
velatura ad intonazione cromatica a base di pigmenti naturali stemperati in acqua
posa di protettivo consolidante , silicato d’etile fino a rifiuto

Stato di conservazione
Per effetto di percolazione acqua piovana, pur avendo la copertina in pietra, su molti elementi in cotto si rilevano
disgregazione, rottura, fessura, crepa, caduta e perdita.
INTERVENTO CONSERVATIVO
Da un attenta analisi e dopo un confronto con il funzionario MIBACT, è emerso che vi sono alcuni elementi in cotto originali
che non sono stati delle metodologie a seguire descritte :

5. Conclusioni
L’intervento di restauro dei monumenti funebri di “ Sepolcreto “ è stato eseguito in conformità a quanto documentato
e relazionato, nella relazione tecnica specialistica, da me redatta prot. 058/15 del 12/08/15.
Unico intervento che non è stato relazionato, ma abbondantemente condiviso fra tutte le parti, riguarda la prima
balaustra in pietra¹.

L’intervento ha richiesto la collaborazione frà impresa edile e di restauro, allontanata la ghiaia di riporto è emersa la
base della balaustra, a seguire sono stati eseguiti interventi di restauro² riferiti alla scheda 2 della presente relazione.
Un ultimo ciclo di protezione, idrorepellente silossanica e successiva posa di biocida è stata eseguita su tutte le
superfici, tale intervento dovrà essere eseguito ogni dodici mesi. In particolare si segnala la necessità di posare biocida,
affinché venga preventivamente evitata ogni possibile crescita di vegetazione sui beni culturali .

Utilizzando il supporto magnetico allegato ed una connessione internet, sarà possibile visionare le schede tecniche dei
materiali. La scelta dell’azienda nell’utilizzo di tale sistema permette un contenimento dei costi di gestione e rispetto
dell’ambiente . Sara comunque possibile visionare le varie schede tecniche sul supporto magnetico allegato ,
nell’apposita cartella creata .
