Tuesday 23rd February 2021, 0145 Real News. Scrolla.Africa Jail Zuma, Zondo tells ConCourt Toby Shapshak Jacob Zuma should be sentenced to two years in jail for contempt of court for blatantly refusing to appear at the state capture commission. “Zuma’s behaviour is calculated to undermine the integrity of this court and the judiciary in general,” said the commission’s secretary Professor Itumeleng Mosala. “This is no ordinary case of contempt.” The former president has defiantly refused to appear at the commission, chaired by Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo, defying the apex court’s instructions to appear last week. Two other criminal charges have already been laid against Zuma.
One for leaving the hearings without permission, and the other for failing to appear when summoned by the commission in January. In an urgent application to the Constitutional Court filed on Monday, Mosala wrote that Zuma had intentionally and unlawfully failed to appear before Zondo on 15-19 February as the ConCourt instructed. Mosala said Zuma also failed or refused to furnish the commission with affidavits about evidence about his role in corruption at Eskom and Prasa. Nkandla’s most famous tea-party host also made statements that are injurious to the reputation of judges and the entire judiciary. “Zuma should be sentenced to imprisonment for a term of two years for contempt,” wrote Mosala, who wants the apex court to order Police Minister Bheki Cele and National Police Commissioner General Khehla Sithole to, he said: “Take all steps as may be required to give effect to the order.”
After the Constitutional Court in early February ordered Zuma to appear, Zuma said: “It is also patently clear to me that I am being singled out for different and special treatment by the judiciary and the legal system as a whole.” He said the commission into allegations of state capture can expect no further cooperation from him in any of the processes. “If this stance is considered to be a violation of their law, then let their law take its course,” he said. Picture source: @PresJGZuma & @Zondo_Raymond Motshekga praises class of 2020 despite 5% drop Lungani Zungu The matric class of 2020 has defied what appeared to be insurmountable odds to achieve a national pass rate of 76.2%.
Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga said: “I expected a bloodbath. “I’m really grateful because these learners faced a monumental challenge but still made it.” The minister said the havoc wreaked by the Covid-19 pandemic which forced the country to go into hard lockdown last March created unbelievably difficult challenges for teaching in the country. Despite the 5% drop when compared to the matric class of 2019, Motshekga said the 2020 matric class had produced quality results. “If it weren't for Covid, this class could have produced the best results ever,” she said. The results are as follows: ● Free State 85,1% ● Gauteng 83,8% ● Western Cape 79,9% ● KwaZulu-Natal 77,6 % ● North West 76,2% ● Mpumalanga 73,7%
● Limpopo 68,2% ● Eastern Cape 68,1% ● Northern Cape 66,6% At least 36,5% of matric pupils achieved a bachelor’s pass, with 26% scoring a diploma pass. Motshekga announced that 83,6% of prison inmates had passed their matric examination. Of the 124 inmates who sat for the exams, 71 passed with bachelors. For the 2020 academic year, 725,034 pupils were registered to write with 607,226 writing exams. More than 2,100 special needs learners wrote, and over 2,000 passed. The top three best performing districts were Tshwane South followed by Gauteng West with Gauteng North coming in at number three. The minister encouraged those who did not make it to register for the Matric Second Chance Programme.

The designer of the Jacob Zuma Tea Shirt told Scrolla.Africa that he was shocked when he saw his brand trending as “the tea shirt challenge.” Ndamase is not bothered by reputational damage associated with former president Zuma #TeaShirtChallenge. ‘’I saw my precious brand being labelled as the ‘tea shirt challenge’. "But after reading the tweets, I realised that no serious damage can be done to my brand. I decided not to read too much into the Twitter trend,’’ said Ndamase. He said he understood that some people might not like Zuma.
"Just to be clear to you and some of those people who reached out to me asking to instruct Msholozi not to use my design shirt, I will not do that.” He said all his clients, including Nxamalala, current or former heads of states are his fashion brand's flag bearers. “I will never guide them about when, where and how to wear any of the garments that I have designed for them." Besides dressing Mandela and almost all Africa’s former heads of states in post-1994 South Africa, Ndamase has also dressed dozens of international sports and entertainment stars. Shack dwellers unleash terror in Port Elizabeth Mkhuseli Sizani Two passenger buses belonging to the Algoa Bus Company, a Toyota quantum, a car and a bakkie all burned to ashes when shack dwellers in Port Elizabeth took to the streets this week. Sipho Ntsondwa, the leader of the Nelson Mandela Bay Informal Settlements Forum and the Westville informal settlement, led the violent protest on Monday morning. In December, Ntsondwa, who is known for leading aggressive protests, surprised his followers when he told them to stop toyi-toying and to educate each other about the dangers of Covid-19. But his change of heart resulted in a rampage down Old Uitenhage and Missionvale roads in Westville Port Elizabeth. Last month MMC for Electricity and Energy Luxolo Namatte switched on electricity for 1,000 shacks in the area but did not finish the remaining 250 by this month as promised.
Ntsondwa told Scrolla.Africa they held a peaceful protest and observed all the Covid regulations. “Because Covid is still a killer,” he said. But police provoked the residents. “We were about 400 people. We were carrying placards. But the police arrived and shot at us without speaking to us or asking for community leaders,” he said. “Then the protest turned violent because we were provoked. Four of us were injured. The residents will protest until the municipality comes and addresses them.” Captain Andre Beetge said: “According to the two bus drivers, they were alone in their buses and on their way to collect passengers when an unknown number of persons blocked the vehicles in the street and told the drivers to get out. The buses were set on fire and the drivers allowed to leave. The attackers also fled the scene leaving police to find the burning buses.” Municipal spokesperson Mthubanzi Mniki said: “The remaining 250 (shacks) have not been completed due to unavailability of
Ready Boards and a Service Distribution Box from Supply Chain stores.” Family demands justice for boy killed by dogs Lungani Zungu It was supposed to be a simple walk to the shop to buy cooking oil, but it turned into a tragedy when nine-year-old Thabiso Zulu was mauled and killed by four dogs. His father, Dayalan Kanniappen from Verulam in Durban told Scrolla.Africa that Thabiso was attacked by two Rottweilers, a German Shepherd and an unknown breed on Thursday. “The dogs would not let go of my son’s flesh despite his screams. He fought, but the dogs just kept ripping him apart,” said the emotional father. “My son couldn’t move. He was sobbing uncontrollably. That sight of my son is haunting me. Even talking about it is painful.”
The neighbours rushed to Thabiso’s rescue and fought the dogs, but the attack continued until a passerby allegedly shot and killed all four dogs. Bleeding heavily from an open stomach wound and a ripped arm Thabiso was transported to a local hospital where he later died. Dayalan said he wanted the owner of the dogs, who is said to have fled the area with his family, to be arrested. “He was reckless with the dogs, and now my son is dead. I want him to pay for this. He must be punished.” Thabiso's mother Nomusa was not ready to talk about her son's gruesome death. The Animal Matters Amendment Act says that any person whose negligence with an animal caused injury to another person is guilty of an offence and liable on conviction to a fine or to imprisonment of up to two years. The SAPS Reaction Unit confirmed the incident.
Provincial police spokesperson Captain Thembeka Mbele confirmed the incident, saying police were investigating a case of murder. No arrests have been made. Picture source: @davidcherr Malawi police issue warrant of arrest for fugitive Prophet Bushiri Shepherd Bushiri’s family were stopped from leaving Malawi for Kenya earlier on Monday, because the controversial prophet’s daughter reportedly required urgent medical treatment. Bushiri’s daughter and mother-in-law were prevented from boarding a flight at the Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe, which was flying to Kenya. The Malawi police have also issued a warrant of arrest for the fugitive, who is a self-proclaimed prophet.
Bushiri’s spokesperson Ephraim Nyondo confirmed in a statement that the Malawi police have issued a warrant of arrest for a man known as “Major 1”. "I can confirm that on Friday, 19 February, Prophet Shepherd Bushiri’s daughter was blocked from flying to Nairobi, Kenya, to seek medical attention. She was accompanied by three guardians. Prophet Bushiri and Prophetess Bushiri were not part of the delegation. “The daughter, eight, was duly referred by competent Malawi medical professionals to seek further medical treatment and all required immigration details were in place to facilitate her travel through a chartered air ambulance. “Up to date, my office hasn’t been supplied with any information as to why the child was denied the right to lawfully access medical attention after being duly referred by a competent medical practitioner. “The child’s condition remains critical at the same medical facility which referred her to seek further medical attention in Kenya,” said Ephraim.
Ephraim added that it was not the first time that the child, due to her medical condition, was referred to Kenya for medical attention. “The child has been flying there several times and I am shocked with this isolated blocking.” He said he was shocked that only a few hours after the child was denied her right to good health and right to life, Malawi police issued a warrant of arrest for Prophet Bushiri and Prophetess Mary Bushiri. “I still don’t have the grounds for the warrant and, according to the media, even the police haven’t explained the warrant.” He said on Sunday, Malawi police stormed one of Prophet Bushiri’s premises to issue the warrant of arrest - a move which his lawyers challenged through a court injunction. Major 1 and his wife fled from South Africa to Malawi in November after being granted bail. They're facing charges of theft, money laundering and fraud in connection with an alleged R100-million investment scheme. Picture source: @PsBushiri
“Twins” conceived three weeks apart Arthur Greene The newborn “twins” of UK couple Rebecca Roberts and Rhys Weaver were in fact conceived on separate occasions three weeks apart. This extremely rare occurrence is known as superfetation, and has only been documented on a handful of occasions. In March last year, the couple were delighted to discover that Rebecca had fallen pregnant. However, when Rebecca turned up to her 12-week appointment, she was shocked to find out that she was carrying two children, not just one. She was even more surprised to be told that one of the foetuses was at a significantly earlier stage of its development than the other.
Because superfetation occurs so seldomly, Rebecca’s doctors didn’t immediately recognise it so they ran a series of tests to find out why one twin was so much smaller than the other. But neither twin showed any sign of having a developmental issue. Eventually, specialist twin doctors were brought in, and they concluded that the two infants were conceived on different dates. Usually, pregnancy suppresses ovulation, which is why cases of superfetation are extremely rare. Rebecca and Rhys’s twins developed into a healthy boy, and a three-week younger but nonetheless healthy girl. They were warned, however, that the children’s birth would introduce a new complication: when the boy was ready to be born, the girl would still be in a premature stage. The twins were born on 17 September last year, the boy at 2,09kg and the girl at 1,10kg, three minutes apart, creating a social media storm. The baby boy, Noah, spent 24 days in the NICU, while the little girl, Rosalie, remained in hospital for 95 days.
Rosalie was abnormally tiny in her first few days. “The smallest nappies were ridiculously huge on her and the dummy she had was no bigger than the top part of your thumb,” her mother said. After four months however, Noah and Rosalie have both grown into healthy young infants. Picture source: Instagram @roberts.supertwins Stevie Wonder plans to move to the ‘Motherland’ Sizwe Sibiya Stevie Wonder who has spent almost his entire life on stage, has hinted that he might spend the rest of his remaining years in the “Motherland,” Ghana. Stevie, real name Stevland Morris, told Oprah Winfrey on The Oprah Conversations interview that he had plans to release a
song that will make America smile one more time. Then he said: “I leave to travel to Ghana, because I am going to do that.” “I don’t want to see my children’s, children’s children have to say ‘oh, please like me, please respect me, please know that I am important, please value me.’ What is that?” asked Stevie Wonder. It is not the first time Stevie had expressed how he feels about the state of governance in America, police brutality and Black Lives Matter. He Tweeted on 13 February: “Tomorrow is Valentine’s Day. A day of love. Sadly I don’t believe there is enough love for this nation among some senators,” ending the post with “The Universe is watching us.” Whether Stevie, the 22 times Grammy winner will leave America or not - but rumour has it that it is not the first time Stevie has mentioned moving to Africa and yet he is still in America. According to Africa.BusinessInsider, Stevie told the International Association of African American Music that he had fallen in love with Ghana.
"There's a greater sense of community there," said Stevie in 1994 after he had visited Ghana. Picture source: @ItzStevieWonder Video source: @MobilePunch Emmly aiming for the top - one match at a time Joseph Chirume Mkhululi George watched helplessly as his business empire crumbled. Worse than that, he couldn’t stand the image of his daughter, 10-year-old Emmly, and other kids her age, scrambling for food in the streets of Nkulumane, a township in Bulawayo where they live.
“My businesses collapsed under the harsh economic conditions. I started doing part time jobs and renting out my business equipment,” said Mkhululi. But Mkhululi, a sports trainer and a man who does not easily take to defeat, decided to nurture Emmly’s athletic talent to prepare her for life as a sports star and to give him a job. “Emmly gave us work. I played tennis at an early age after which I became a high performance certified coach.” Mkhululi and Emmly travel to tennis tournaments while his wife,Tariro looks after Emmly’s five-year-old sister. Emmly’s love for sport became clear when she played soccer as a three year old. “She also loved swimming but the love for tennis emerged when she was six years old,” said Mkhululi. “We decided to give her homeschooling so she could develop her skills.” In a short time Emmly has amassed a number of medals. Most of her opponents are always a year or two older than her.
“A bright future awaits Emmly. Her skills are progressing in the right direction all the time,” said Mkhululi. During a recent tour of South Africa, Emmly came away with a bronze medal in the Under-12 category in a tournament in East London, beating the favourite, Tamera Steward in straight sets. She lost in the semi-finals to Milan Swanepoel. Emmly said she is inspired by young tennis sensation, Coco Gauff. “I want to go all the way. I want to become a champion. I enjoy improving with every game I play,” she said. Picture source: Crowdfunder.co.za
Castro warns Kaizer Chiefs teammates Menzi Magubane It’s tough out there. This is the warning from Kaizer Chiefs forward Leonardo Castro who told his teammates that playing in the CAF Champions League group stages is not child's play. On Tuesday Amakhosi will kick off their Champions League Group C campaign hosting Guinean outfit Horoya at FNB Stadium in Soweto at 6pm. The Columbian knows the competition after winning it with Mamelodi Sundowns in 2016. "You have to take your chances,” said Castro, who said the away games are the most difficult. “At least we’re starting at home which we must use to our advantage." He said conditions in other African countries are so tough that getting single points away is vital.
“Coming home with a point is always a big achievement. “We will have to minimise mistakes and try to score first to win the match and come away with maximum points," he said. This is Chiefs’ first match in the competition's group stages. Amakhosi were scheduled to play Moroccan team Wydad Casablanca in their opening Group C match two weeks ago. Amid the logistical chaos the fixture has been postponed three times. Belouizdad were scheduled to play Sundowns on Saturday but that match was cancelled due to Covid-19 restrictions in Algeria. Both Wydad and Algerian team CR Belouizdad were handed deadlines to confirm their new agreed venues and dates as per the CAF Covid-19 regulations. The Tanzania Football Federation have confirmed they will host Belouizdad against Downs this Sunday at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam.
On the same day Wydad will host Amakhosi in Burkina Faso at the August 4 Stadium in Ouagadougou. Picture source: @mpolokengmohafa Arrows flying high after award Menzi Magubane Coach Mandla Ncikazi will be looking for nothing less than maximum points from his Golden Arrows team to go with the good news that was delivered to them on Monday. In their last seven matches Arrows collected 16 points with five victories, one draw and only one defeat. Abafana Bes'thende were confirmed by the Premier Soccer League as the DStv Premiership Q-innovation quarter two winners. They walked away with R1,5 million, which will certainly motivate the Durban-based team to continue to do well this season.
On Tuesday they will host bottom of the table Black Leopards at Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium in Clermont at 5pm. Arrows will be relying on their top scorer Velemseni Ndwandwe for goals - the lanky striker having netted five goals after 15 matches. A win for Abafana Bes'thende will see them tied in second place with SuperSport United. Their long break will come in handy as matches are coming thick and fast. In their last match just over a week ago they were 3-1 victors over Stellenbosch. On Saturday Lidoda Duvha lost to Baroka in the Limpopo derby, Kostadin Papic's first match as Leopards’ new coach. The Serbian, who has coached several South African teams was announced last Thursday as the new Leopards mentor. Fresh from a derby defeat, Papic will face a mammoth task to try and rescue Leopards from relegation.
Picture source: @GoldenArrows Atletico plays Chelsea - while Barca counts the money Menzi Magubane When Atletico Madrid host Chelsea in the Champions League last 16 first leg, Barcelona will be watching with interest. Luis Suarez left Barca to join Atletico at the end of last season but the deal included a clause which means Barca will receive an additional fee if Madrid get through to the Champions League quarter-finals for the next two seasons. According to Spanish Daily Sport, Atletico have already paid R120 million for hitman Suarez – with just over R80 million for the initial fee and around R34 million after the Uruguayan played 20 games for them. The next possible windfall is the Champions League clause. Barca will be hoping that Atletico beat Chelsea in both legs and
make it to the Champions League quarter-final. That would see a cheque of R68 million coming to Barcelona. With Suarez in fine form, Chelsea should be wary of the South American. So far he is the La Liga leading goal scorer with 16 matches, one ahead of his friend Lionel Messi. Atletico, who are La Liga leaders, are going to this match having suffered a shocking 2-0 defeat by Levant at home on Sunday. Chelsea, who are in fifth place in the English Premier League, drew their last match with Southampton on Saturday. Meanwhile in Italy, Lazio will play host to the competition’s defending champions Bayern Munich. This first leg will be held at Stadio Olimpico at 10pm on Saturday. Picture source: @brfootball
Controversial King Diko of the AmaBhaca has died Zukile Majova The Diko Royal House has confirmed the death of self-proclaimed King Thandisizwe Madzikane II Diko of the AmaBhaca tribe in Mount Frere in the Eastern Cape. Diko, who is also the husband of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s spokesperson Khusela Diko, died at an East London Hospital after a short illness yesterday. Elders in the family left the royal house in eNcunteni village this morning enroute to East London while Khusela Diko was due to fly from Pretoria to East London to be with the family. “Ingonyama Madzikane II Diko passed away in the afternoon of Sunday 21 February 2021 in East London following a short illness,” said family spokesperson Lumko Mtimde. “Isizwe samaBhaca and the Royal family are still coming to terms with the loss of our beloved father, son and husband.”
Mtimde said they will make further announcements once the kingdom has finalised the arrangements for the burial. The controversial king was still embroiled in a R140 million tender to supply personal protective equipment (PPE) in 2020. His wife and presidential spokesperson has been placed on leave while the Hawks investigate the tender. The controversial tender also implicated former Gauteng Health MEC Bandile Masuku and his wife Loyiso Masuku who have since lost their jobs. While Diko claimed his involvement in business tenders would benefit the AmaBhaca people, a group known as the grandchildren of King Madzikane, the founding father of the AmaBhaca tribe said the tenders were for self-enrichment. The Eastern Cape Department of Traditional Affairs rejected his claim that he was a king saying the AmaBhaca people were just a tribe and never a kingdom and therefore do not have a king. Historically the AmaBhaca people are a breakaway group from the Zulu Kingdom who left the area of Stanger led by Inkosi Madzikane and settled in Mount Frere in the Eastern Cape.
