The Jaguars are on a roll The Howells-Dodge Jaguars are on a roll with a 10-1 record and have no signs of stopping. On December 28 and 29, the Jags went to Centura High School in Cairo to play in the Blizzard Blowout Holiday Tournament. The Jags played the Centura Centurions first on the 28th. It was a slow-going o ensive game with the score at halftime being only 20-14. With some timely shooting and stout defense, the Jags held on and beat the Centurions 49-39. The Jags then played the Fort Calhoun Pioneers on the 29th in the championship game. Both teams came out in the first half shooting hot, but the Jags stayed on top with the score at the end of the first half being 41-23. The Pioneers came back in the second half hot, bringing the game to as close as 5 points, but the Jags shut the door late and defeated the Pioneers 70-60 winning the Blizzard Blowout Holiday Tournament. The Jags next game took place in Humphrey against the Humphrey St. Francis Flyers on Friday, January 7th. The Jags got out to a quick start in the first quarter by scoring 14 and only giving up 5. The Flyers fought their way back in the second quarter to make the score of the first half 25-20. The Jaguars came into the second half fired up and scored 26 in the third quarter and 18 in fourth to win the game 69-47. In this game R. J. Bayer scored his 1000th career point. Congratulations to R. J.! The Jags then played the GACC Bluejays in Dodge on Saturday, January 8th. The Jags came out firing on all cylinders and led the game at the end of the first half with a score of 34-22. The Jags kept it coming in the second half and with some great shooting and good defense all around the Jags beat the Bluejays 68-49. In this game, Gavin Nelson tied the school record for most three-pointers in a game (5). Blake Sindelar also recorded a triple double with 22 points, 13 rebounds, and 11 assists. Congratulations to the Jags on a great season, so far, and we hope to see more wins during the season. - Aden Lange
The Lady Jags take third in Centura’s Blizzard Blowout On December 28th, the Lady Jags competed at Cairo in the Centura Blizzard Blowout. They started off the tournament with a loss to Centura, 29-38, but they didn’t let it get them down. They came back with a 55-33 win against Sandy Creek, finishing third in the tournament. Senior Abigail Pieper has high hopes for the rest of the season, saying, “The beginning of the season gave us an insight into what we need to accomplish, we just have to push through and achieve the goal we have been working towards since the beginning of the season.” The Jags competed against Humphrey St. Francis on the 7th, losing 32-52. The following night, they lost to GACC 30-65. Coach Polacek commented, “We played a top-notch team on back-to-back nights. There’s no doubt that it wore on us physically, but the girls fought through it.” On Tuesday, January 11, the team played Lutheran High Northeast in Howells and won an exciting game 48-43. The Lady Jags will travel to Wisner-Pilger on the 14th, Mead on the 15th, and host Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family in Howells on the 18th as a make-up game. - Jordan Howell
Wrestlers keep on fighting As the season gets closer to the end, the wrestlers continue to work hard to improve on their technique. Entering into the second half of the season, they are practicing even harder to get a step ahead of their next opponent. On December 31st, the team traveled to Shelby Rising City and took second as a team with a score of 170, with every one of their wrestlers placing. Team results were: Isaac Koliha (106) 3rd, Dylan Brichacek (120) 1st, Gage Stutzman (126) 3rd, Lane Belina (145) 3rd, Austin Hegemann(152) 4th, Jacob Hegemann (160) 1st, Levi Belina (170) 1st, and Jestin Bayer (182) 1st. On January 8th the Howells-Dodge Wrestlers went to Wisner for a tournament. They placed 2nd as a team, losing only to Summerland by 1.5 points. Those placing were: Isaac Koliha (106) 3rd, Dylan Brichacek (120) 1st, Gage Stutzman (126) 4th, Lane Belina (145) 2nd, Austin Hegemann (152) 4th, Jacob Hegemann (160) 3rd, Levi Belina (170) 1st, and Jestin Bayer (182) 1st. The wrestling team will continue to fight as the season progresses. With only 7 more tournaments and one dual promised to them, they are all working to get one more tournament given to them and so they can show what they have earned at state. -Jacob Hegemann
Howells-Dodge Bowlers are defeated at the King-Pin Tournament. On Saturday, December 18th, Howells-Dodge hosted a King-Pin bowling tournament at Hilltop Lanes in Dodge. The team bowled against Boone Central twice, Fremont once, and Columbus Lakeview twice. The team, unfortunately, was only able to win one of their Columbus Lakeview games. Boone Central beat Howells-Dodge with a score of 2-6 in the first match and 1-3 in the second. Fremont beat Howells-Dodge 2-6. Howells-Dodge beat Columbus Lakeview 3-0 in the first match, and Columbus Lakeview beat Howells-Dodge 3-5 in the second. A few days later, on Monday, December 20th, Howells-Dodge faced off against Thurston-Cumming County and beat them 19-2. Good luck to the bowler as they continue their season at Wayne on Thursday, January 13. - Justin Young
The Howells-Dodge Speech Team looks forward to a great year The Speech Team is looking forward to beginning their season. With 14 members, there are many events to plan and discuss. Lots of meetings, practices, and discussions all lead up to the start of the season on Saturday, January 15 at Pierce. After that, the team does not stop competing, hosting the Jaguar Jabber on the 19th and competing at North Bend on the 22nd. Coach Traci Sindelar commented on the upcoming season, “The speech season has already proven to be exciting and energetic with only a week of practices completed. I am looking forward to the season which looks like it will be a crazy adventure!” - Jordan Howell
