Alberobello may be Puglia’s most well-known town, thanks to its trulli. These conical-roofed stone dwellings are unique to the region, with the highest concentration found here in Alberobello. They look like something out of a Disney movie, but these bizarre limestone cottages were certainly not built for tourists. They became popular in the 15th century for residents who hoped to avoid paying taxes. Construction without mortar made them easy to demolish quickly in the event of a royal inspection, thereby avoiding the payment of housing taxes to the King of Naples. In 1797, Alberobello gained independence, with new trulli built with mortar becoming permanent fixtures. 9 | Issue 2

European RIVER Cruising In recent years, river cruises have become one of the hottest travel trends, eliminating all the time and effort it takes to plan a well thought out itinerary, while allowing you to enjoy a different view out your window every day. It’s one of the best ways to explore multiple destinations in Europe without having to hop on and off trains, get behind the wheel, or constantly pack and unpack. Unlike those huge cruise ships, these elegant vessels provide a more intimate experience with minimal capacity. Instead of numbering in the thousands, there are typically less than 200 passengers. You won’t be relegated to cruising only coastlines, with their sleek, smaller size feeling more like a large yacht, providing access to smaller ports. While European river cruises can bring you to major cities such as Vienna and Budapest, they also make stops at intriguing smaller towns.
THE DANUBE RIVER The Danube originates in Germany’s Black Forest, flowing southeast through nine other countries for 1,770 miles before eventually spilling into the Black Sea. Cruises are generally categorized by section, divided by Budapest with the classic Upper Danube one of the best- selling river cruises, providing access to destinations like Munich, Nuremberg, Regensburg, Passau, Linz, Melk, Durstein, Vienna, and Budapest. It showcases some of Europe’s finest scenery, passing magnificent castles and grand cathedrals. After dark, beautifully illuminated waterfronts are a highlight. Classic Upper Danube cruises typically departs from the Bavarian city of Munich, which can be reached via a direct, non-stop flight from Chicago if you’re coming from the U.S., as well as flights with just one connection from multiple international airports throughout North America. You’ll want to arrive early to spend some time exploring Munich, perhaps visiting 12th-century Peterskirche, the city’s oldest church, and relaxing with a pint and traditional German fare like pretzels and roasted pork knuckle in one of the authentic beer halls. Hofbräuhaus is one of the most popular, dating back to the 16th-century. Black Forest After your cruise gets underway, you’ll stop at Nuremberg. Austria Budapest While much of the city was destroyed during World War II, it was painstakingly restored using the original stone of nearly all the city’s main buildings, including the old churches and castle in the Altstadt. In Regensburg, you can choose to sail the Danube Gorge and sample beer from one of the world’s oldest monastic breweries. Day trips are possible to places like the medieval Czech city of Cesky Krumlov or Salzburg in Austria, the birthplace of Mozart. Vienna is on most itineraries, bringing opportunities to tour famous Schonbrunn Palace or explore its highly acclaimed wine region nearby. Ending in Budapest, the “Paris of the East,” you’ll return home from here, but don’t miss enjoying its many cultural attractions and a soak in one of the thermal baths first. THE RHINE RIVER The 820-mile-long Rhine River flows through six countries, The Netherlands, Lichtenstein, France, Germany, Austria, and Strasbourg Switzerland, often incorporating its major tributaries too, Moselle, Main and the Neckar rivers. Many begin in Amsterdam, with key stops including Cologne, Koblenz, Baden-Baden, and Strasbourg, typically concluding in Basel. Cruises on the Rhine highlight medieval castles and beautiful vineyards, along with charming villages and the historic grandeur of centuries-old cities. With numerous flights from international airports throughout North America to Amsterdam, the Dutch capital is easy to reach – you can catch a nonstop flight from New York City, Atlanta, Boston, Los Angeles, or Chicago. Upon your arrival, take time to beat the jet lag by doing a little exploring. This is a very bike-friendly city, with bicycles readily available to rent by the hour or the day, making Cologne Germany it easy to tour on two wheels, visiting classics like the Anne Frank Amsterdam House, Van Gough Museum, the canals, or even the tulip fields, if you’re embarking on a spring cruise. The highlights you can expect to enjoy include 2,000 years of history in Cologne, like Roman ruins and medieval churches, along with fascinating museums. Simply strolling the Old Town, capturing photos or sitting down for a drink in a cozy pub is enjoyable here. Baden-Baden is renowned as one of Europe’s most fashionable spa towns, located atop underground hot springs at the edge of the Black Forest, filled with original 19th-century French-influenced architecture, with ruins of Roman baths in the city center. Strasbourg’s Old Town is especially lovely with its half-timbered houses, and you may be able to take an excursion to Mittelbergheim in the Alsace to sample tasty wines. Ending in Basel brings the opportunity to enjoy its medieval Old Town that’s centered around the Marktplatz and taking in views from the 12th-century gothic cathedral which contains the tomb of Erasmus, the 16th-century Dutch scholar. THE RHONE RIVER For food and wine lovers, a river cruise on the Rhone is especially ideal. The only major French river to empty in the Mediterranean, it stretches for 505 miles, flowing through the gastronomic heart of France and two of its top wine-making regions. Witness the sun- drenched landscapes that inspired artists like Cezanne and Van Gogh, along with the world-famous vineyards of Burgundy and the French food capital, Lyon. You’ll pass breathtaking scenery, including lavender-filled fields and the wild Camargue region with its flamingos, bulls, and horses. Typical itineraries cover around a 150- mile stretch, starting in Tarascon northwest of Marseille, with stops like Avignon, Vienne, and Macon, concluding in Lyon. While there aren’t any direct, non-stop flights from North America, you’ll find many options to reach Marseille with just one connection from cities like New York, Miami, and Washington, D.C. If you want to combine your cruise with a visit to Paris, from there Marseille is easy to reach by train or an inexpensive flight followed by taking the train or bus to Tarascon. Tarascon Excursions in Vienne typically visit the 25 B.C. remains of a temple and amphitheater built in honor of the Roman Emperor Augustus Vineyards in Burgundy Lyon and his wife Livia. THE DOURO RIVER Cruises on the Douro River through the Douro Valley reveal one of Europe’s most renowned and oldest wine regions. They sail by ancient wine estates, passing sublimely scenic landscapes that are just as impressive as the area’s food and wine. Known as the “River of Gold,” the130-mile route begins in Porto, traveling to Vega de Terron along the border with Spain. As the river is no longer navigable after that point, the vessels turn back here, but you’ll have time to absorb the architectural splendour in Salamanca which has a history dating back to the Celtic era. The medieval city is known for its ornate sandstone architecture and is also a great place to attend a flamenco show and dine on authentic specialties like salt cod. Along the way, you’ll stop in the heart of port wine country at Regua to visit Lamego. Pinhao is another popular spot for port wine tastings. Oporto City Porto You’ll fly in and out of UNESCO-listed Porto, which can be reached Portugal from many cities in North America via connecting flights. Or catch a non-stop flight to Lisbon from Boston, New York, Miami and other cities, then take the train to Porto. Here you may have the option for an excursion on a traditional rabelo, the wooden watercrafts that once carried the city’s famous port wine. Filled with charm, Portugal’s “second city” is worth spending more time in too for those who can arrive early. Its historic streets are adorned with blue tiles and open up to reveal an incredibly scenic waterfront where one can cross the bridge to take in colorful sunsets, explore the architectural treasures or join a city tour led by a local. The Cais da Riberia riverside promenade is lined with restaurants and bars while just above is a kaleidoscope of vibrantly painted buildings ranging from tangerine to bright yellow. Of all the European river cruises, the Seine is arguably the easiest to access with many direct, non-stop flights to Paris from around the world, including North America, departing from international airports in cities like New York, Chicago, San Francisco, and Dallas. Nearly all Seine cruises include a day trip to Chateau de Versailles, one of the finest examples of royal residence over the 17th and 18th centuries. Slow Travel in JAPAN Although Japan is renowned for its futuristic technology and super-speed bullet trains, Japan is actually a great place to enjoy ‘slow travel’. Here’s why.
Think Japan: neon-drenched shopping streets, subway trains packed with exhausted commuters, arcade halls, technology plazas, and cosplay squads? It all sounds plenty of fun, and certainly is an authentic vision of Japan, but this is only one side of the story. Unlikely as it might sound, Japan absolutely is a slow travel destination. Move away from the cities and a different picture emerges: dense conifer forests, snow-capped mountains, ice blue rivers, cascading falls, ancient pilgrimage paths, and picture postcard villages straight out of samurai folklore. Nowhere is this truer than in the Japanese Alps. Set in the central heartland of main island Honshu, the Alps are comprised of three mountain groups: the Hida range to the north, Kiso in the centre, and Akaishi range to the south. Stretching for roughly 200km in total, the mountains are set equidistant between Japan’s two most famous cities, Tokyo and Kyoto, and as such are a very accessible addition to most itineraries. Like the rest of Japan, the best time to travel here is during the spring and autumn, when the weather is clear, dry, and temperate. Spring brings cherry blossom season, and with it the crowds. So our favourite time to visit is undoubtedly the autumn months of October Autumn, Alps, Kamikochi and November, which bring a slower pace of travel, and a dramatic change in the Alpine colour palette from deep pine greens to an Tsumago village, Nakasendo explosion of reds and oranges. A typical itinerary would take in the charming small cities of Matsumoto – gateway to the Alps, and famed for its striking ‘Black Crow’ Castle- and Takayama, with its well-preserved geisha and samurai quarters, lined with wooden shophouses and sake breweries. It is also possible to venture across to Nagano – host of the 1998 Winter Olympics – and neighbouring Yudanaka Onsen, home of the famous onsen-loving snow monkeys. What you’re really coming for though are the villages and their breathtakingly-beautiful rural backdrops. The Kiso Valley holds a string of impossibly picturesque ancient postal stations - Narai, Kiso, Tsumago, Magome, Nagiso – all of which make up the best-preserved section of Japan’s legendary Nakasendo Highway. The Nakasendo was once the primary route between Edo (now Tokyo) and Kyoto. At the height of the Edo period between the 15th and 17th centuries, these villages served as key rest points for merchants, pilgrims, and samurai making their way between the two great cities. They remain largely, and delightfully, untouched to this day. 59 | Issue 2
