Island Park Public Library May/June 2021 Annual Report to the Community It’s been a complicated year for all of us – to say the least! The Library closed on March 16, 2020. During the closure, we communicated with the public via social media, online chat, and telephone calls. Many of you registered for digital library cards and the usage of eBooks tripled. We reopened to the public for curbside pickup on June 22. In addition to books, audio books, DVDs, and CDs, we began circulating Backyard Games (see Page 5). As museums began to reopen, we reinstituted our Museum Pass program. We reopened our building to the public on July 23. We brought back public computers on Sept. 8 and study tables on Oct. 5. We’ve been running online programs since April 6, 2020. We have implemented Grab ‘n Go craft and cooking programs for adults and children which have proven to be quite popular. We began outdoor programming a few weeks ago and will continue with both outdoor and virtual programs until condi- tions enable us to begin indoor programming. We’re pleased to say that our Summer Reading Clubs will all be in-person, with online options for any who might prefer it. Now, we are totally open to the public for browsing, museum pass checkout, computer use, studying, and reading. Our hours have been expanding in response to changing conditions in the community (see back page for hours). We greatly appreciate your support of the Library this past year. Our attendance in the Library has doubled recently with the warmer weather and the improving conditions. See you at the Library! Book Group Recommendation Recursion by Blake Crouch The science-fiction thriller Recursion is a cautionary tale about a chair that allows its occupants to recreate memories. The moral and ethical issues around the idea of curating our memories led to rich conversations. Our Book Club found the two protagonists – Barry, a NYC cop and Elena, a well- intentioned neurologist - to be well-developed and relatable. We would suggest that readers pay close attention in order to keep track of the back-and-forth timelines. Recursion is an engaging and thought-provoking read. Recommended for all audiences – not just for science fiction fans.
