ESTATE NEWS SILVER LAKES SPRING FESTIVAL “It is spring again. The earth is like a child that knows poems by heart.” -Rainer Maria Rilke I don’t know about you, but I love the season of Spring. It follows the cold of winter, with lots of sunshine, new growth and flowers everywhere as well as renewed energy. The true equinox (when the sun crosses the equator for the day and night to be of equal lengths) to officially mark the arrival of Spring occurred on 23 September this year. However, the cold had been gone for a few weeks along with our days of hibernation, so it was appropriate that our Estate celebrated the arrival of the new season with a fun-filled family Spring Day on 14 September at the Silver Lakes Clubhouse. The perfect weather was worthy of a celebration and there was fun and entertainment for the whole family. The fit people amongst our residents enjoyed the safe outdoors that our Estate offers and took part in a cycle race and the first official Silver Lakes Time Trial where the 18 INTRA MUROS OCTOBER 2019

ESTATE NEWS time of each participant was recorded. You are also welcome to join the Silver Lakes Athletics Club every Tuesday at 17:30 from the Clubhouse to do the same Time Trial route and to keep track of your progress. Delicious food stalls and a beer tent provided everything for lunch. There were also various business and craft stalls to stroll through with delicious offerings and quaint things to buy. There was much entertainment for the little ones, from archery, a paintball tunnel, mechanical bull, cupcake decoration, bungee trampoline, rocket parachute, go- carts and pony rides. Our doggie competition attracted a big crowd at noon and the biggest, smallest, prettiest and ugliest dogs were crowned. Silver Lakes’ Got Talent was a big surprise this year as some really talented people and beautiful voices took to the stage. The Bring and braai was a cosy and fun event and families could sit and enjoy the evening together until late. Thank you to all our Silver Lakes staff members, Henk, Daleen, Samarize, Koot, Geoffrey, Phineas, Bellican, Thobani, Vincent and Bernardo as well as the staff behind the scenes who worked hard to make this event a big success. Have a wonderful Spring and we hope to see you at our next event! Kind Regards, Nienke Moolman Marketing Manager

ESTATE NEWS NEWS FROM THE ENVIRONMENTAL TEAM L ooking back over the past six years that I have been the Environmental Director, I realised that I have written nearly 60 articles for Intra Muros. I had a look at some of the articles I wrote for the October issue; some were about early spring, others about drought, others about floods! This time of the year we are in the up and down part of the year where the new season starts but we still need to feed the game in the Game Reserve – especially when it is so dry. This year has been drier. One year we had to feed them nearly into December while other years we had floods… But mostly this month is about “newness”. New plants, regrowth, redesigning and we are all ready for the new season. We all are very fortunate to live in this amazing Estate and together we all need to look after it; we need to work towards keeping the a garden, big or small, the whole Estate elements, one after the other and the Estate special for us and our children and or your house garden, is like peeling the whole = the onion = the garden is grandchildren. We can do that through layers of an onion. One looks at different created. little things such as recycling. Or as you know, one of my favourite topics – is to have friendly, well-cared-for streetscapes. In that way we don’t only look after each other but the environment as well. Planting our gardens and street trees not only beautify the Estate but the plants use carbon dioxide in a process known as photosynthesis – therefore improving the quality of our environment. During photosynthesis, plants give off oxygen which we breathe. Line and form - the bridge leads your eye towards the palm trees Looking at the below the elements, by grouping plants of varying or similar design can be explained as the layers of forms or colour, together. Hard elements design: such as fountains can be added to become a 3rd dimension. Add a few climbers or 1. ESTATE NEWS Colour, line and texture is in abundance in this picture 2. Texture Texture is a material that can be felt. Looking at leaves, bark or thorns for example, a certain ‘feel’ is created in one’s mind. Thorns are prickly and in one’s mind they will be a deterrent for entering and area. Thin leaves are usually soft and ferns for example are seen as ‘friendly’, therefore they can be used in areas allocated for reading, reflection and children’s areas. The tactile surface of a plant’s ‘texture’ sends out messages and communicate the look-and-feel in your garden. The scale of the plants create a space in which the home behind nestles in comfort 4.Space and Scale The next few layers of our ‘design onion’ are ones designers use to create different ‘feels’ to gardens or sections of gardens. This means the size of one object 3. Colour compared to another. Firstly the buildings Last but not the least of the outer layers to the garden. For example one will not is colour and will be the overall theme in use large Ficus trees in a duplex garden, my garden. ESTATE NEWS 5. Focal point(s) A focal point is that very special feature that needs attention, which one wants to highlight a space, view or element. Fountains, sculptures, murals, strong shaped plants and even grouping of colourful flowers or plants can be focal points! These prominent features attract the attention and can be conversation points, be part of the main design elements and therefore is part of the backbone of your garden. They are not isolated from the rest of the garden, but stand out as PART of the garden’s look-and-feel. One usually has only a few, if not only one, focal point(s), but they can for example be used to hide eyesores. One of the first lessons we were taught by our lecturer, Ben Farrell, was to use a thick pencil and start ‘large’, and secondly find the negatives on-site to ‘hide’ them. Use focal points to draw the eye away from them or be bold and they become focal points! The side gate frames the focul point which is the front door Repetition is key to keep design elements together and to perpetuate the look and feel of the Estate 7. Repetition As you would have gathered from the above lots of ‘abstract’ elements determine if your design will work, but if all of those are in place and there is little or no repetition, all will be lost in a mish-mash of plants and hard elements. Repetition of shapes, lines, materials, all of those are necessary to create unity in your garden’s look-and-feel. Repetition not only binds together your whole design, but it also creates harmony in your design. Since you are re-using visual elements in design of the hard and soft architecture of your garden over and over again. Repetition will balance out the different elements. Even repeating architectural elements in the garden will bind garden and buildings together. Grouping of mass planting with singled-out features such as these create a very strong, but Look out for too little repetition which might become untidy and clutter a garden. The same tranquil setting goes for too much repetition, which may become monotonous and boring – especially in large gardens where there is no ‘surprise’ around the next corner. 6. Grouping Grouping plants together in a garden is a technique designers use to create space, Tidiness is one of the KEY ISSUES in any look-and-feel and many other aspects space to create an inviting and friendly of a garden’s design. A lot of the above atmosphere. If one has irrigation pipes elements are part of this layer. Grouping sticking out all over a garden it may for example ‘helps’ with the scale in a seem untidy since irrigation is a ‘behind garden by using smaller plants to the front the scenes’ element and should not be and gradually larger pants to the back in ‘seen’. Unless of course designed like the a garden – thus creating a deeper feel to Pompidou Centre in Paris where all the the garden. Grouping also creates texture services form part of the overall design? and can create colour splashes in gardens when working with different colour plants. But I think you will ‘get my drift’. Just as much as your house needs to be tidy It is therefore very important after one INSIDE, the outdoors need just as much has decided on the basics of shape, form, unity and certain details such as plant- and attention!
