LATEST IN THE STUDIO! The below shot is how the studio looks at 5am when I get off to an early start! The roller door is half up (I often leave it this way when I’m ducking in and out) and to me it has this magical quality at this time of day. Usually I see this sight when I’ve set myself up for my first painting session of the day and am returning from the kitchen with a steaming cup of coffee, ready to get started. To the left are the works that were in progress and being completed back in October - November. You can see My Holiday Heart there on the table and The Speaker on the easel in the background. jordanharcourthughes.com jordanharcourthughes.com

LOCAL BEAUTY Flowers never cease to bring me joy. They are such a source of nourishment and sense-based pleasure I can’t help but celebrate them! I have walked past these particular roses on the front gate of a beautiful private home on Tinakori Road in Wellington several times. They stun and fascinate me every time and so of course I had to take a few photo studies along the way. Thank you for the delightful treat, dear home owner and rose grower! I have also learnt the name of this particular rose - the Pierre de Ronsard. It’s name sake is a male French poet from the 16th century. I planned to share some of his biography and then felt sad for all of the female French poets throughout history who didn’t have roses named after them! So instead, perhaps I will make mention of Madeleine de l’Aubespine (1546 Villeroy, Burgundy – 1596) - who was a French aristocrat, lady in waiting to Catherine de Medicis, poet, and literary patron. That’s who I’d prefer to celebrate! She was one of the only female poets praised by “the prince of poets,” (de Ronsard) and she was one of the earliest image: courtesy wikipedia: Portrait of a woman, said to be Madeleine de L’Aubespine, Dame de Villeroy female erotic poets. jordanharcourthughes.com jordanharcourthughes.com
thinking in circles what forms of intelligence are loaded in spheres and circles? In the studio that our bodies come into contact with that contain Throughout my caree as a painter, I’ve painted intelligence from other places; other realms and other circles. For the longest time, I never saw anything intelligent species. I just don’t think that we, as humans, remarkable in it. Circles are just there, somehow. have figured out how to decode and access these particles. But in recent years I’ve been connecting the dots I think that the frequency that your body, your energy (also round!) in regards to the different ideas I’m ecosystem, resonates on, influences the spheres and interested in as an artist. And one of the things I’m circles of data that you attract – the kind of circles most interested in is sound. I’m interested in how the body receives and interprets information, and in particular I’m interested in what sounds are in our environment that we can’t necessarily detect Sound - particles vibrating with our ears, but may be still interacting with on some level. Silent sound. Sound particles in motion The image to the top right of vibrating particles shows the effect of sound. See those tiny little particles, only visible on a molecular level? I often think that the circles I draw in my paintings, which often hover near to a figure’s head or in the atmosphere around it, are exactly there particles vibrating in the air, created larger than life. See my artwork The Speaker (left) for an example of this. Particles could contain intelligence from othe realms and frequencies I have a theory that there are other particles The Speaker - original artwork on canvas jordanharcourthughes.com jordanharcourthughes.com
that enter your ecosystem and nudge up against your subconscious; the beginning of an exchange between different states of consciousness. The barrier of human consciousness I think our own state of logical, rational consciousness inhibits us from being able to access and interpret the alien data that floats around us. We haven’t worked out how to allow it in. But what if, through dreaming, mindfulness, art; anything that lets us access the freer states of abstract thinking; what if we could tap into these rich spheres of intelligence and use our human bodies to start opening up to recieve that data? When circles start leaking... The first circles I painted, in 2004, were light blue on a dark blue background, about eight or ten of them on a big canvas with a figure in front and around them. They were tight, closed orbs. Then they became rougher, looser circles. Rings that intertwined and overcrossed. To me, this showed a change – the circles loosening, the intelligence enclosed inside of them becoming ready to release. You know when your vision blurs, and then duplicates in front of you? This is what these circles look like. As though they are shaking themselves up, to loosen their insides. Then, my circles began to drip. I see this as the data inside of them releasing, coming out of the vessel that it was transported in, becoming apparent to my senses. The beginning of the opening up to intelligence beyond our own. The Speaker speaks, through art, to this process. jordanharcourthughes.com jordanharcourthughes.com
