President’s Message By David Abarr, Portland Section President Hello Portland members! It is almost spring and that means coming out of hibernation and car season will soon be here! We have another great line up of events. We start the year off with the LeMay at Maryhill visit in the Tacoma, Washington area. This is the other portion of the LeMay car collection that isn’t at the main museum in Taco- ma. We follow that up with a spring drive through the Willamette Valley, ending with a visit to Mercedes-Benz of Salem. I look forward to seeing members this year at events. My 190e project although very slow going has been progressing. I had the euro dog leg transmission rebuilt and that is back. I located a m103 3.2 AMG straight 6 engine in Canada and that is in progress of being re- built. After that it would be getting the car back together after quite a few years of being inoperable. I look forward to having this car running and bringing it to events. Happy motoring, Dave The statement above was written prior to the U.S. outbreak of COVID-19. In light of current events, club gatherings have been cancelled through at least April. We will attempt to reschedule events later in the year depending on how things progress. We hope your family is safe and healthy. We look forward to getting back to club events as soon as we can. In the mean time, be safe and keep practicing social distancing. Holiday Lunch Recap By Matt Nenninger, Portland Section Vice President On December 8th, 2019, members enjoyed a delicious late lunch at Hudson's Bar and Grill, inside the Heath- man Lodge in Vancouver, WA. We had a nice turnout of about 18 people. The atmosphere was very festive with the lodge decorated for the holidays, and there was lots of good conversation around our big, private table. Many thanks to Paul and Stephanie for hosting, and for the holiday goodies! See more photos here: https:// pdxmbca.smugmug.com/Holiday-Lunch- Dec-8-2019/ Southern Oregon Holiday Reception Recap By James Hendershot, Portland Section Director at Large MBCA members in Southern Oregon enjoyed a Christmas reception on December 13th at Jim and Kirsten Hender- shot’s house in Grants Pass, Oregon. A dozen folks showed up, and enjoyed an informal time of food and an assortment of local wines, along with warm friendship (to make up for the cold evening) and car talk, lasting late into the evening. Members brought cars ranging from classics to the late model sedans and SUV’s, and everyone had a great time! Page 3 NORTHWESTERN STAR Winter 2020 Edition
Recap: Annual General Meeting By Matt Nenninger, Portland Section Vice President Our Annual General Meeting took place after the Holiday sea- son this year, on February 12th at Stanford's Restaurant and Bar on Hayden Island. Several members received anniversary pins, including Walter Tabrum who received his 25 year pin. George Larson was awarded the Member of the year award for his work with club membership. The new editor of the Star Magazine, Jeff Zurschmeide, was in attendance, as was Jeff Stites from Keith Martin's Sports Car Market. Blue Nelson was there too, arriving at the meeting after driving nearly 24 hours straight, from the MB Classic Center in California! The food was delicious, the service was outstanding, and the conversation lively. Our thanks to Russ Erdman for organizing this fun event! George Larson receives the Member of the Year Award. Stacy Rollins tells members about the upcoming March drive to visit the LeMay Collections at Marymount. See page 8 for details. Cover Story: Mercedes-Benz Auto Racing By George Larson, Portland Section Membership Co-Chair Human nature has supported competition in nearly every possible endeavor throughout history. Once two cars were fabricated and in the same vicinity, contests inevitably began. The earliest races were before 1900. There are some excellent books (reasonably priced as used) that detail the early history of racing and the Daimler/Mercedes-Benz predecessor companies up to the end of the millennia. Prices are estimated. Cover Story, continued... Mercedes-Benz participated in motorsports rac- ing until a crash at Le Mans in 1955 where two competing cars collided, the 1955 Mercedes SLR hit the pit wall and scatter its drivetrain into the pits and crowd causing 84 deaths including the 2 drivers. Mercedes-Benz withdrew from factor sponsorship of racing competition resulting in a long Mercedes-Benz absence in motor- sports. The company focused on building safer vehicles. Upon returning to motorsports in the mid-1980s (roughly 30 years later), the first outings were in the Deutche Tourenwagon Masters (DTM) series that were held in Germany. 1988 was the first factory-sponsored racing team year. The series used small (C-class), light-weight 4-door cars that were simply tuned production cars (for cost savings). 1986-1988 Mercedes-Benz AMG C-class CLK DTM (W201) 190E 2.3-16 I4 (M102), DOHC 4-valve/cylinder, dry sump, 240/260/300 hp @ 7,000 rpm 260/260/270 lb-ft (year over year increases), 6-speed Xtrac sequen- tial transmission, carbon brakes (1988 first year with MB Team sponsored cars). Engines were jointly built by AMG and Mercedes. 1989-1990 Mercedes-Benz AMG C-class CLK DTM (W201) 190E 2.5-16 Evo 1 I4 (M102\111), DOHC 4- valve/cylinder, dry sump, 315 hp @ 7,000 rpm 285 lb-ft 1991-1993 Mercedes-Benz AMG C-class CLK DTM (W201) 190E 2.5-16 Evo 2 I4 (M102), DOHC 4-valve/ cylinder, dry sump, 333/340/373 hp @ 7,200 rpm 290/300/300 lb-ft (year over year) 1994-2000 Mercedes-Benz AMG C-class DTM (W202) 2.5L 90° V6 (M106) DOHC 4-valves per cylinder, fuel injected, naturally aspirated, dry sump, transaxle 6-speed sequential (paddle operated from 1995), ABS, steel chassis, carbon fiber panels, 400/440/500 hp @ 11,500 rpm 221 lb-ft, #2,161 Starting in 1999 engines were built by HWA Team, also known as HWA RACELAB, that is the motor racing team of HWA AG based in Affalterbach. HWA also develops and builds vehicles and components for Mer- cedes-AMG. HWA was responsible for managing the AMG Mercedes factory team in the DTM. HWA AG was founded in 1999, and takes its name from Hans-Werner Aufrecht, who cofounded AMG with Erhart Melcher in 1967. Winter 2020 Edition NORTHWESTERN STAR Page 6

With 11 Driver’s Championships, 7 Manufacturers’ Championships, 14 Team Championships, and 190 first-place finishes, Mercedes-AMG is the most successful brand in the histo- ry of DTM. Mercedes-AMG Customer Racing can also look back on a very successful season in 2018, as customer teams participated in more than 1,100 races and were able to capture numerous victories and ti- tles. This series of cars provided development testing and production of many of the current high- performance engines in today’s cars. The retirement from DTM is to participate in the Formula E racing se- ries starting in 2020. Look for articles in the future about Formula 1, GT3, GT4, and Formula E. Coming Events LeMay Collections at Marymount– 3/28 On Saturday March 28 the Portland section will drive to visit the LeMay car museum in south Tacoma (Spanaway) WA. This is the LeMay Museum at Marymount – home to hundreds of cars on display. Most car enthusiasts have heard of America’s Car Museum in Downtown Tacoma, next to I-5 and the Taco- ma dome. It has also been referred to as the LeMay museum because many of the cars it houses were owned by Harold LeMay - but not all. Many of the remainder are located in Marymount. That’s where we’re going because it’s different and out of the ordinary. Harold LeMay loved cars, or maybe just loved buying cars because he ended up owning nearly 2,000 of them after four decades of collecting. Reportedly he had cars stored all over the Tacoma area. In the 1980’s he purchased from the Sisters of Saint Dominic, a school the sisters owned but had to close for financial rea- sons. LeMay moved much his car collection to the former school’s grounds. When the America’s Car Muse- um was created about 500 of the LeMay cars were transferred to it. Most of the remaining cars are on dis- play at Marymount. Eventually the LeMay family established a museum at Marymount where the public can view the collection. The Seattle Section MBCA has been to Marymount and highly recommends it as more interesting than the museum downtown. Museum website link: https://www.lemaymarymount.org/ The Drive Plan: Meet at the Gee Creek Rest Stop on I-5 north of Vancouver WA (exit 11). We’ll leave for Marymount at 8:30am and arrive about 10:45 – 11:00am. The tour lasts about 3 hours and views the Main building and the Vintage car garage. After visiting the museum some may wish to go visit the Griot’s Garage Store and HQ in Tacoma. It’s about 20 minutes’ drive from the Marymount museum. Sumary: What: Visit LeMay car museum at Marymount When: Saturday, March 28th at 11:00am (or 8:30am at the Gee Creek Rest Stop) Where: 325 152nd St E, Tacoma, WA 98445 RSVP: Stacy Rollins, 503-645-0675. stacy@stacyrollins.com Winter 2020 Edition NORTHWESTERN STAR Page 8
