Curriculum / study schedule / module guide
The structure of the master program allows students the freedom to choose courses from a cata-
logue of subjects. This gives students the opportunity to individualize thier study program to best
fit their interests. However, all students are required to pass three mandatory modules and three
project works. It is advisable to do one project work per semester and start with the literature
research. The project work topics are assigned from professors based on their areas of interest
and expertise. The best way to apply for a project work is to contact a professor and discuss your
interests to determine if he/she can offer you a suitable topic. Both lab project works cannot be
supervised by the same professor.

Any further information about your studies can be found in the study schedule and in the module
manual:

Credit Points
abbreviated CP. The credit point system, introduced by the Bologna Reform, makes studies com-
parable throughout Europe. The CPs represent the amount of time that a student needs to spend
in order to achieve a module‘s learning outcome. In other words, it is a measurement of the stu-
dent‘s „Workload“. The Workload is calculated based on lecture and seminar time, as well as pre-
sentations and self-study phases. One CP is equal to a Workload of 30 hours. An academic year (2
semesters) is equivalant to a workload of 60 CPs.

Electives
Students have the freedom to choose from a broad variety of different modules during their mas-
ter studies. Each module is worth 3 CPs or 6 CPs. In order to complete the master program, stu-
dents are required to earn at least 54 CP. Therefore, students must choose enough modules in
order to complete this requirement.

Qualifications for the master thesis
Once a student has passed all module exams (with the exception of one module exam) and suc-
cessfully finished all three project works he/she is qualified to register for a master thesis.

Registration for the Master thesis:
https://en.fh-muenster.de/ciw/studierende/2-formularechemie.php

Lecture notes
A copy of a module‘s „Skriptum‘‘ („lecture notes‘‘) may be provided to students to use as a lear-
ning tool. A „Skriptum‘‘ is a summary of a professor‘s lecture material which can be used to assist
with notetaking. Most scripts are issued from the professors and can be downloaded from the
website.

Generally, the professors will provide students during the first days of lectures with a general
overview of topics which will be covered as well as important dates and contact information.

Registration for lab courses and experiments
The registration process for lab courses and experiments varies based on the subject, the lecturer
and the executive laboratory staff. In some lectures, a registration list will be available during the
first hours of lecture. In other cases, a list will be posted outside of the specific laboratory or it
is necessary to speak with the executive laboratory staff and register in their office. It is strongly
advised to attend the first lecture of a subject in order to obtain all the information necessary in
order to register for a lab course or experiments.
Searching for a room in Münster and Steinfurt
Münster is a popular student city that has been called the “World’s Most Liveable City” since 2004.
One in five of Münster’s 305.000 inhabitants is a student. Every year, thousands of new students
come to Münster and Steinfurt looking for accommodation at the start of the semester. For this
reason, the International Office has been named. Strongly recommends to start looking for a
room as early as possible. Ideally, housing should be arranged before arriving in Münster. It is ex-
tremely difficult to find an accommodation at short notice upon arrival.

Housing options for students in Münster and Steinfurt:

1. Student Support Services Münster (Studierendenwerk)

The student accommodation situation in Münster is becoming increasingly critical, especially for
the academic year 2020, and it is strongly advised to promptly submit an online application for
a dormitory! Please do NOT wait for an acceptance letter, as it is always possible to withdraw an
application without costs. Although the Studierendenwerk is not directly associated with the FH
Münster, a close cooperation exists. Therefore it is necessary to apply independently directly and
online at the Studierendenwerk website under the following link.

https://www.stw-muenster.de/en/studentisches-wohnen-en/bewerbung/online-bewerbung/

Once you apply for the accommodation, you will receive an email from the Studierendenwerk with
an offer. It is VERY important to respond to this email immediately and before the stated dead-
line. If the offer is not accepted, the application will be cancelled. It is important to also check the
spam mail folder regularly to assure that no Studierendenwerk emails have been delivered there.
For more information regarding students dorms, visit the website of Studierendenwerk.

2. Church-run and private halls of residence

There are also a few church operated and private residance halls available in Münster, which offer
a very small amount of rooms. The application requirements vary. The cost of rent is between 200
and 300 euros per month:

http://www.muenster.org/wohnheime

Please contact the individual residence halls directly to find out more information about availab-
le rooms and application requirements. Please note that some of the church operated residence
halls do not allow visitors to stay overnight.

3. Private housing market

Offers for private rooms and flats can be found at the links below:
• Na dann… Wochenschau für Münster: http://www.nadann.de
• AStA Wohnbörse: http://www.asta.ms/angebote/wohnen/wohnboerse
• Westfälische Nachrichten (real estate segment of the local newspaper)
  http://www.wn-immo.de
• WG-gesucht: http://www.wg-gesucht.de/
• Ebay Kleinanzeigen: https://www.ebay-kleinanzeigen.de/
Experiments and lab courses
The experiments and lab courses are mandatory and provide students the opportunity to gain
valuable skills, such as scientific working. The laboratory experiements allow students to imple-
ment theoretical knowldge in a practical laboratory setting.

Depending on the subject, students will learn how to program, construct and conduct a scientific
experiment. It is possible that the time spent conducting the experiment is less than the time re-
quired for data analysis and evaluation.

It is important to show up to the lab courses sufficiently prepared and informed about the neces-
sary theory, safety aspects and risks associated with the experiments. Failure to do so may result
in exclusion from the experiment and removal from the laboratory. It would then be necessary to
carry out the experiment at a later date. There are stated deadlines for the submission of reports
and revisions. Please make sure to allow adequete time for the potential corrections.
