Continuous assessment over the 2 years The programme puts an emphasis on forms of achievement and excellence, which the established Leaving Certificate has not recognised in the past. Students can progress to third level after the LC though PLC courses.
Leaving Cert Applied Leaving Cert Work Experience one LCVP work experience LCA versus day a week. 4 placements in 2 yrs. one week in 5th year only Traditional LC Practical/ project work Academic/points orientated Continuous assessment (Tasks/Key assignments) LC exam counts for majority of marks Small class sizes more one to one tuition Generally bigger classes Irish/French completed Irish compulsory for 2 in 1 year (Irish years exemption still retained)
The Leaving Certificate Applied is intended to meet the needs of those students who are not adequately catered for by other Leaving Certificate programmes or who choose not to opt for such programmes. ➢ Students who would take all ordinary level subjects at Leaving Cert. aspiring to a grade O6 (grade D under the old system). Who would benefit from ➢ Students who find difficulty with learning by rote rather than learning by doing. the LCA Programme? ➢ Students who have difficulty with essay type answers. ➢ Students with poor attention span and retention skills.
Learning in Leaving Certificate Applied involves students in new and different learning experiences in school including: Group work/Discussion Group and individual assignments Oral Presentations Visitors to the classroom Project work Questionnaires/Surveys/Displays/Exhibitions Work experience
It is a practical and vocational Leaving Certificate programme – particular focus on preparing students for the world of work and adult life. Work experience is a large component of LCA- (Four different work experience opportunities over two years). The learning experiences are active and practical –learn by doing. Opportunities to improve students self-esteem and self- confidence. Develop a wide range of skills- communication, research and IT for example. (Preparing them better for Further Education). The content, approach and assessment differs somewhat from the traditional Leaving Cert and this might suit your son/daughter best.
It’s still a normal school day with a normal school timetable. You’ll still do Irish, English and Maths and a lot of the option subjects are similar to other 5th yr classes. You learn with a lot more of a hands on approach such as making things, researching online, class discussions etc. You will most likely have smaller numbers in your class which allow teachers have more time with you. There is less exam pressure in June of 6th yr as smaller assignments are due throughout the school year. Students must have a 90% attendance record to pass modules
English & Communication Irish - 5th Year Applied (yr 1 only) Mathematical Application French – 6th Year Applied (yr 2 only) Social Education 7 Exam Specialism 1 (see next slide) Subjects Specialism 2 (see next slide) Exams in all of the above
Potential Specialism's: ❖ Technology ❖ Engineering ❖ Agriculture / Horticulture ❖ Childcare / Community care ❖ Hotel Catering & Tourism ❖ Graphics & Construction Studies. ❖ Office Administration & Customer Care ❖ Information and Communications Technology ❖ Hair & Beauty
Other weekly Modules- Vocational Preparation & Guidance (work experience and future employment, CVs, Career investigations & interview skills) Arts Education(Drama, Art or Music) Leisure and Recreation –(PE) Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Elective Modules - e.g. Religion, Science etc.

A very important aspect of the programme is the work experience modules. Students complete four work experience placements Each student attends work experience one day every Work week which gives students the knowledge and experience of the working world Experience Also provides them with an understanding of what they need to achieve throughout their course to excel to their chosen career.
In 5th year, LCA students partake in work experience one day each week. In 6th year, LCA students partake in work experience one day each week. Work Parents/Guardians assistance Experience Students are encouraged to pick work placements that they have an interest in or areas of work they are thinking of pursuing in the future.

How many subjects do I study for Leaving Cert? Students study 7 subjects, unless they have an Irish exemption – in this circumstance students study 6 subjects. ( If students do LCVP this can be treated as an extra subject) You count your top 6 subjects for CAO points. Frequently What is a core subject? A core subjects are Irish, English and Maths. A core is a Asked subject you must study. The exception is Irish where Questions students have an Irish exemption. How many core subject do I study? Three. Irish, English and Maths.
What is an optional subject? An optional subject is a subject students can choose to study for Leaving Cert based on their like of the subject and/or their college requirements. The optional subjects are listed on the slides above and on the information Ms Cumiskey gave to students. Frequently Asked How many optional subjects do I study? Questions Students select and study four optional subjects
If I have an Irish Exemption can I study another optional subject in school? No. A student is, in most cases, given an Irish exemption to allow students get additional supports. It is not possible for the school to provide an alternative subject at that time. Frequently Can I study an optional subject outside of school? Yes you can but be mindful that many LC subjects now Asked have project requirements that need to be signed off by Questions a teacher in the school and the principal. If you are doing project work outside of school then the school can not stand over it.
If I study an extra subject outside of school can I drop a subject in school? No. Students must follow the school timetable. How many subjects are counted for college points? When students complete their LC their best 6 subjects are Frequently counted for college points. Asked Questions Why study 7 subjects if only 6 are required? It gives students better options to work on subjects they are really good at. It also gives students a chance to study more subjects at higher level.
If I didn’t do a subject for Junior Cycle can I do it for Leaving Cert? That depends on the subject. Subjects such as Geography, History and Business can be taken up at LC with out a huge challenge. Other subjects such as French, Music, DCG etc are much more challenging to commence in Fifth Year and it is not recommended that students consider this. If you have queries contact Ms Cumiskey. Frequently What is the benefit of LCVP? Asked LCVP can be used as an additional subject and can help students if they have a bad day in the exam Questions How do I know if I can do LCVP? Students need to qualify based on their subject combinations. This will be available on the website with this presentation.
How do I select my subjects? A VSware link will be sent to parents to select their subjects online. Do I have to select 6 subjects? Yes. Frequently Why do I have to select 6 subjects even though only 4 is needed? Asked To allow us meet student preferences and ensure students get the subjects they prefer students must enter Questions six subjects. Am I guaranteed to get my preferred first 4 subjects? No.
Frequently Asked Questions Why can I not be guaranteed my four preferred subjects? • The school may not have enough resources to provide every student with their preferred subjects. This is because the numbers in some classes are capped at 24 students while other subjects may need a minimum of 10 students to run. • For example, Music has a cap of 24 students but if 29 students opt for Music in their first four preferences then 5 students will not get offered Music. If a student has put Music as preference Number 4 then they will get offered their 5th or 6th preference. • Similarly if only 6 students opt for a subject then that subject may not be viable to put on the curriculum. In this case the students will be offered preference 5 or 6
If I can’t get my four preferred subjects what happens? • Then you will be offered choice 5 or 6 Frequently What happens if I don’t enter Asked 6 subjects? Questions • Then you may only get three choices when the system completed the selection process. You may then have to take what ever subject is on offer even if you haven’t studied this subject before.
I’m not sure what subjects I want to do, Speak with Ms Cumiskey what should I do? Can I change my subject Only if there is place choice in September? available in another class Frequently I didn’t submit any Asked subject preferences, You will have to take whatever subjects are on offer what happens? Questions When will I know if I get Students should know by my preferred subjects? mid-May
