Senior Cycle Programmes

 Irish schools offer two main programmes for students progressing to
Senior Cycle (Fifth & Sixth Year)
1. Leaving Certificate (Established)
2. Leaving Certificate Applied (LCA)

 A third Senior Cycle Programme called the Leaving Cert Vocational
Programme (LCVP) runs alongside the traditional Leaving Cert –
students qualify based on their subjects and the LCVP has a work
  experience component

What is  The Leaving Certificate Applied is a distinct, self-

achievement and excellence, which the established
Leaving Certificate has not recognised in the past.

 Students can progress to third level after the LC though
                PLC courses.

 It is a practical and vocational Leaving Certificate
programme – particular focus on preparing students for the
world of work and adult life.

 Work experience is a large component of LCA- (Four
different work experience opportunities over two years).

 The learning experiences are active and practical –learn by
  doing.

 Opportunities to improve students self-esteem and self-
confidence. Develop a wide range of skills-
communication, research and IT for example. (Preparing
  them better for Further Education).

 The content, approach and assessment differs somewhat
from the traditional Leaving Cert and this might suit your
  son/daughter best.

Profile: Jamie Rice, Bush Post Primary School,
Success Stories Dundalk.
Jamie Rice achieved LCA with Distinction. Jamie’s
ambition was to go on to a sports related course
in college. He is now in his second year studying
for his diploma in Sports Science in Newry College
of Further Education. 3 universities in England
have accepted Jamie’s application to complete his
honours degree in Sports Science (Teesside
                  University in Middlesbrough, Manchester
                  Metropolitan University and John Moores
University in Liverpool). He found the LCA course
very practical and very hands on. He also liked the
continuous use of I.T which has helped him in his
current studies e.g. typing up essays, projects etc.

Questions  Why study 7 subjects if only 6 are required?
It gives students better options to work on subjects they
are really good at. It also gives students a chance to

 If I didn’t do a subject for Junior Cycle can I do it for
               Leaving Cert?

are much more challenging to commence in Fifth Year and it

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can I not be guaranteed my four preferred
subjects?
 • The school may not have enough resources to provide every
student with their preferred subjects. This is because the numbers in
some classes are capped at 24 students while other subjects may
need a minimum of 10 students to run.

 • For example, Music has a cap of 24 students but if 29 students opt
for Music in their first four preferences then 5 students will not get
offered Music. If a student has put Music as preference Number 4
then they will get offered their 5th or 6th preference.

 • Similarly if only 6 students opt for a subject then that subject may
not be viable to put on the curriculum. In this case the students will
be offered preference 5 or 6
If I can’t get my four preferred
