‘Ad Vitam Paramus’ ‘We are Preparing for Life’. Independence Follow us on Twitter @westcravenhigh Friday 29 January 2021 We can be followed @WestCravenHighSchool “The sky is full of stars and there's room for them all to shine.” Key Messages I hope that this E-bulletin finds you and your family well. Wednesday was National Holocaust Memorial Day. Students in all year groups were involved in activities to mark this day of remembrance; from designing memorial flames, to writing their thoughts on this year’s theme ‘be the light in the darkness’, to reading children's survivor stories. Callum in Year 11 has written a summary of the experiences of Ivor Perl BEM who was just 12 when he was taken to Auschwitz. You can see his work and others featured later in this E-bulletin. As a reading academy, our current challenge for both students and staff, is to send in a photograph capturing them extreme reading. Can anyone beat our Director of Science, Miss Grant, who is reading “Sapiens: A brief history of humankind” while zooming through the woods on her mountain bike! Send in your entries to claim a prize, but - with safety in mind - please ensure that your child seeks permission for their activity first! As part of a new feature called ‘We Love Books’, students will be writing book reviews, hoping to inspire others to pick up a book. First up is Harry from Year 7 with his review of “The Golden Compass” by Philip Pullman, featured later in this E-bulletin. Many thanks for your positive feedback from our virtual “Meet your Form Tutor” evening on Wednesday. We have made sure that lockdown has not undermined our ability to meet with you and have a dialogue about your child’s learning. I hope that you found the virtual on-line system easy to use, and enjoyed the opportunity to see your child’s form tutor. Please get in touch if we can help or support in any way. Students continue to engage well this week with our move to more live lessons through MS Teams. If you have any technical difficulties with MS Teams or ClassCharts, or if your child needs a password reset, please drop us an email at help@westcraven.co.uk Our core value theme of the week is ‘independence’. A huge “well done!” goes to all our Star of the Week winners for gaining the most independence ASPIRE points. Next week, we will focus on student well-being as part of National Children’s Mental Health week. There will be a range of support and activities available, including a screen free afteroon where we will be suggesting your child engages in exercise or other well-being activities. Please stay safe and follow all Government guidance. I truly hope that it will be safe for us to reopen on Monday 8 March, as is the Government’s latest ambition. Mrs Tracy Foy Principal

There were 10 winning schools selected and we are proud to announce that West Craven High School was chosen. Staff have won some treats including hot chocolate, marshmallows and a travel mug which have been very well received. Holocaust Memorial Day Wednesday 27 January As part of our Holocaust Memorial Day learning, Ava has produced this beautiful candle design, Joshua has written down his thoughts on what it means to be the light in the darkness and Mrs Price and her tutor group have produced this word cloud expressing their views on the Holocaust.
English In English, students have been looking at language from the Holocaust. Aadam, Emily Florence, Laura, Lexie and Amelia have been designing their own memorial flames using language from the Holocaust. In addition to designing memorial flames, students have been reading survivor stories from children of the Holocaust. Callum in Year 11 has written a summary of the experiences of Ivor Perl BEM. Ivor was just 12 years old when he was taken to Auschwitz. He survived with the help of his older brother, but the rest of his family were murdered in the Holocaust. Here is a link to Ivor's story with an accompanying video. https://www.hmd.org.uk/resource/ivor-perl/ Ivor Perl: A Survivor’s Story. Holocaust Memorial Day. Ivor was just 12 years old when he was taken to Auschwitz. He survived with the help of his older brother, but the rest of his family were murdered. Ivor Perl was born Yitzchak Perlmutter on 4 February 1932 He had eight siblings. He had rocks thrown at him and believed it was quite normal, as was being called ‘dirty Jew’’. Most of the war they were safe from the Nazis. In March 1944, Nazi occupation began in Hungary. New legislation meant contact between Jews and non-Jews was banned and Jews were forced to wear a yellow star. Ivor remembers having to put boards in front of their windows to prevent them from being smashed. His father was taken away for forced labour along with his eldest brother. He never saw them again. The family was soon deported to a bigger ghetto for two days, where they were told they would be sent east on a transport to work on farms. Ivor, who was 12, was forced onto a train with his family. After days of suffering in the cramped and dirty train carriage with people dying around them, they arrived at Auschwitz-Birkenau. Ivor wanted to join the line that his mother, sisters and younger brothers were told to stand in, but his mother stopped him - a decision that saved his life. Ivor was put into a barrack in Auschwitz I. He was given a number – 112021. Ivor ended up hiding in the children’s barrack after an air raid siren sounded, and then the following morning the whole children’s block was sent to the gas chamber.
Ivor and Alec were sent by train to the Allach Concentration Camp in Germany. They marched the prisoners for seven days to Dachau in the spring of 1945. The general refused to kill the prisoners because the enemy was approaching. It was overcrowded so some managed to escape, including Ivor and Alec. After a few days hiding in the forest, the American army liberated the camp. The rest of their family had died, they were informed by the red cross. In November 1945 Ivor and Alec managed to get on a transport to England, where they finally settled in London. I think Ivor will be very upset with the whole story and it has been very traumatic and so he would be scarred for life. Callum Whiteley Year 11. Mrs Woodward has found it quite emotional teaching this week, and would like to thank her Year 7 students who have shared some extremely moving poems with us. Just A Lonely Boy I am just a lonely boy I was forced out of my country Nothing to do It was now a place of violence, Not even a toy A land of war A city destroyed Confused and alone Working with aching bones My city was shattered, There was no safety living there. No hair on my head Walls of terror were enclosed on the town No cosy warm bed Protection seemed to be extinct I miss my home and family But I knew somewhere in this world And playing in the park so happily There would be a place where the peace They are leading us to the shower block Was the glue holding the country together. All I can see are faces of shock Zara Syers But where is my shoe? Zara’s great grandma is a Holocaust survivor and I have no clue! has written a book about her experiences. I am just a lonely Jewish boy Auschwitz took away my joy We found a single shoe, Harry Middleton Belonging to a child age 1 or 2 What could have happened? To this poor child abandoned It will have been horrific Just another holocaust statistic To witnesses of the crimes This was the most terrible of times Imagine the people queuing in their lines Heading for the gas chambers Not knowing upcoming dangers All those innocent people, who lost their lives due to such unspeakable evil. Amelia Pearson

It is clear, that in some year groups we have work to do! The pastoral team are regularly making contact with those students who are not logging in. We are, however, incredibly grateful for the support of our parents in helping many of our young people engage with their online lessons. If you do have any concerns in regard to your child and their access to their lessons, please do not hesitate to contact the school office. help@westcraven.co.uk DFE Guidelines state: the remote education provided should be equivalent in length to the core teaching pupils would receive in school and will include both recorded or live direct teaching time, and time for pupils to complete tasks and assignments independently. The amount of remote education provided should be, as a minimum: Key Stages 3 and 4 to receive 5 hours each school day. If parents feel their children’s school is not providing remote education of a suitable quantity and quality, they are encouraged to in the first instance raise their concerns with the teacher or headteacher. In developing their remote education, we expect schools to: Have systems for checking, daily, whether pupils are engaging with their work, and work with families to rapidly identify effective solutions where engagement is a concern. Student wellbeing We are becoming increasingly conscious of the amount of time our young people spend in front of a computer screen and the ongoing effects this lockdown is having on the wellbeing of our students. As a result, our PHSE coordinator Mrs Pilling has put together a student passport for those students in Years 7, 8 and 9. This passport contains several different challenges and activities, that we hope will be enjoyable and fun, but won't mean more time in front of a computer. Details of these tasks and introduction video have been set on classcharts. We are pleased to say there will be prizes given to the students who produce the most creative responses to these tasks.

Children’s fiction writer, Kate DiCamillo, states that 'reading First up we with The Golden Compass/Northern Lights, we have should not be presented to children as a chore, a duty.
