PRINCIPAL’S REPORT We’re not just a school I am sure many of us were enthralled watching the final of the U S Tennis Open Championships recently. It was amazing to watch the progress of Emma Raducanu through the competition and become the eventual winner. Whilst she has enjoyed tennis from an early age and is clearly very talented, what stands out is her positive mental attitude to her game and determination not to give up or think she can’t achieve so much more. I would encourage all our students to take part in extra- curricular clubs as we all know engaging in physical activity and sports really does help with fitness levels and positive mental health. Having a go and learning to be resilient are very important life skills we have as part of the Mounts Bay Way. We do this through our world class curriculum, High Performance Learning programme, Project Weeks and extra-curricular activities and trips. Every week in the newsletter we celebrate what our students do and this week is no exception. It is great that more activities are starting up after school and we would encourage all students to have a go and be determined and courageous. We will be publishing further details of what is currently available soon. We have been reading in the news recently that the Government has now confirmed the Covid-19 Immunisation programme for children between the ages of 12 and 15. We are waiting on further details from Public Health England and the Public Health Team at Cornwall Council on what the arrangements and involvement of schools will be, but understand it will work in the same way as other school-based immunisations. The School Age Immunisation Service (SAIS) will be contractually responsible for the delivery of the vaccination programme. From next week we are inviting people to visit the Academy to tour our facilities in a safe and socially distanced way for one of our Open Events. We were able to do this last year in place of our usual events and due to current Covid-19 levels in the community we are continuing with this format of personalised tours of the campus. If you know someone who would like to visit, they can arrange a tour here: http://mountsbay.org/open-events-2021/ It is always a great pleasure for us to show guests around and I look forward to meeting many of you over the coming weeks. Best wishes Les Hall Academy Principal

A WORD FROM MR ROYLE Back in the Swing Well that’s the first full week done for all of us now. Well done for getting through. Brilliant resilience was shown this week in terms of our getting back to systems that help us get through the day: new routes, new timings, new food, new bus routes, new teachers, new subjects and so on. Our Heads of School, Mr Yeates, Mr Payne and myself will be putting information in next week’s newsletter confirming the ways in which we communicate with families when things go well or when there are not such positive things that you need to know about. Our Edulink parental app is your means of keeping track of the many many achievement points that are awarded by the Faculty staff each week, as well as our informing you that things have not gone well and behaviour points have had to be issued. Often these are followed up with a phone call and please remember that the form tutor is the first port of call for all enquiries. Quite often we get frustrated when there are challenges faced by students or families that we do not know anything about. There is a well used phrase: We do not know what we do not know! Best wishes to Year 7 as they go on camp next week. It is a fantastic opportunity to embed those relationships between tutor group members and tutors, relationships that we want to be positive for five years and beyond! Some quick bus business: All bus passes for the MBA50/51 and 52 as well as the five school minibus routes will be issued next week. It has been a difficult week on some bus routes due to the poor behaviour of a very small number of passengers. We will be working with the bus companies using their CCTV in order to identify these individuals and take the necessary action. Enjoy your weekend, get some rest and we can get right into the work on Monday morning. This year, I am teaching on Monday mornings and I find it a great way to start the week. Best wishes, Mr S Royle Vice Principal
BE INSPIRED Hands on Science This week in science we have had over 50 practicals and a few practical demonstrations taking place. From making circuits to rates of reactions a wide area of science has been covered. It has been great to get back into the routine of practical work being carried out. Different year groups have been learning about different things. Year 7 have been learning how to use a Bunsen burner safely and about the variables involved in Science work. Other Year groups have had an array of all three sciences being taught. Corresponding practicals have included: Microscopes to looking at onion cell slides they made under a microscope, displacement of metals using sulfate solutions, looking at parallel and series circuits in electricity, discovering metals and the reactivity series, neutralisation reactions using acids and alkalis, finding out how our hands work by making prosthetics, refining copper using copper carbonate and carbon, exploring alkanes and alleles, using catalysts and performing gas tests. GCSE practicals have included: Making a salt from sulfuric acid and copper (II) oxide, exploring how temperature affects the rate of reaction and discovering how molar (strength) affects the rate of reaction. BE INSPIRED St Just Ordinalia Theatre Visit On Thursday, the Year 10 Dance and Drama groups visited St Just to watch the second Ordinalia play - ‘The Passion’. The plays, although similar to the mystery plays performed in the North of England, are unique to Cornwall and are an important part of its heritage. They are the oldest surviving trilogy of theatrical plays in Britain. St Just's Plen an Gwari is the oldest working open air theatre space in Britain. ‘Passio Christi’ (The Passion of Christ) is the second play in the trilogy and covers the period of Christ’s life from his 40 days in the wilderness to his crucifixion and death. After his temptation by Satan, Jesus meets with his disciples and travels with them to Jerusalem for the Passover. Jesus expels from the temple there the merchants and consumers, accusing them of turning it into "a den of thieves”. The high priest Caiaphas sees this occur, and organises a plot to kill Jesus. Report by: Miss Dowrick
BE INSPIRED St Just Ordinalia Theatre Visit After the cleansing of the Temple, the plot follows the stories of Simon the Leper, Mary Magdalene and the annointing of the feet, the thirty pieces of silver, the Last Supper, Peter and the swords, and the betrayal by Judas. The play reaches its climax with Christ on the Cross, and the torturers tormenting and mocking Christ before his death. Throughout these latter scenes is the figure of Pilate, responsible for the order to execute Christ and a precursor to the next play, the Resurrection - which opens with Pilate’s regret for his decision. ‘The Passion’ lives up to its name, and the poignant last scene of Nicodemus taking and embalming the body of Christ is both dramatic and memorable. BE CURIOUS Land Based Studies This year at MBA we have two Year 10 option groups who will be studying their GCSE level courses at Camborne College - Land Based Studies and Construction. On Tuesday the Land Based Studies group started their first day induction at the Rosewarne Duchy College campus. The course is in three units, horticulture, animal care and land management. The first day was mostly a tour of the facilities and our students had a great time walking around the greenhouses, poly tunnels, and animal care areas. We got to see the exotic birds, snakes, spiders, small mammals, donkeys, and long haired pigs which will all be included in the animal care unit starting next week. The course looks really exciting and all the students came away looking forward to next week. Report by: Mr New
BE CURIOUS Grow Your Own This week in the MBA garden the focus has been on harvesting! The poly tunnel is an abundance of fresh tomatoes, melons, cucumbers and basil. The students from iCollege have had a great time deciding which fruit they are happy to taste. The melons from the tunnel went down especially well, with the raspberries out in the allotment a very close second. I was also very surprised at how many students really enjoyed picking fresh tomatoes as well. Our Crystal Lemon globe cucumbers have been prolific growers, supplying so many fruit that even the staff are struggling to eat them as quickly as they are ready. The variety of tomatoes has been a real joy, trying all the different flavours, colours and sizes has given us a clear idea of what to plan for growing next year. Over the next week we will be sowing all our winter greens ready to grow in the poly tunnel through the colder, darker months ahead. Report by: Mr New
BE ADVENTUROUS Cornwall College Experience Year 11s had the chance to experience college life when Cornwall College showcased a "Careers Fest" for upcoming Year 11 students, enabling our students to experience two courses of their choice and a little bit of independence as they navigated their way round the college. Cornwall College is under new management and has undergone some recent changes from a student led approach to a much improved development of their campus. We value the importance of giving our students taster opportunities to help them make their own informed choices Post 16. Cornwall College staff praised MBA students on their focus, engagement and maturity on the day, so thank you Year 11 for representing yourself and the Academy so well. Report by: Mrs Masters
BE ADVENTUROUS Cornwall College Experience “ "I enjoyed having the opportunity to learn something new in interactive ways. It allowed me to engage more fully with subjects that I previously knew nothing about." - Sasha "Everything and everyone was very welcoming. I had a lot during animal management. I thought it was fun looking at the different animals.” - Jenna "I learned about the different type of pipes used in Plumbing. ”- James "I enjoyed learning how to use the digital design programme used on the Game Design Course." - Holly ” "They have a good Film Department.” - Emily "I enjoyed the college vibe.” - Rosy Report by: Mrs Masters

Qube Records Qube Records is a full functional, world-renowned record label and music project which lives here at Mounts Bay Academy. We release original music written, performed, recorded and produced by MBA students worldwide across all digital platforms including Spotify, Apple Music, TikTok and loads more! Since 2016 we have released 33 albums of original music which have sold in over 50 countries! Even more exciting, we’ve recently enjoyed a huge popularity spike in China meaning our total number of downloads and streams worldwide currently stands at a massive 684,592! The summer is traditionally one of the busiest times of year for Qube Records, and even though things were a bit different this year we still managed to cram loads in! It’s long been an ambition of ours to perform at one of the county’s more major music festivals, and this summer we managed to pop up at two! We started with sets on both the Saturday and Sunday of Rock Oyster Festival, as part of a bill including acts such as Sophie Ellis Bextor and Soul II Soul. We rehearsed two completely different sets with completely different young people so each day’s show was unique. The Saturday show was a showcase for songs from last year’s album Distance with brilliant performances from Ruby Rayson, Xenios Jenkins, Izzy Howard and Jade Thomas, ably assisted on guitar by Sid Lewis. Sunday’s set was a mix of new songs from Annie Rees and Sophie Payne, bookended by two of our more experienced performers in Oscar Brown and Georgia Coulson who closed the show with a two song set. They were again joined on stage by Sid Lewis and Marco Burke stepped in at late notice on drums. Both sets were awesome and really well received, and it was great to get to be at such a lovely festival after so long, and hear some great music (and eat great food!)
Qube Records Our next big gig of the summer was at Boardmasters! We’ve wanted to play at Boardies for a long time and after the year and a half we’ve all had it felt like a major moment in Qube Records history to be at the festival. We all really appreciated our artist passes when we skipped the enormous queues to get in and were whisked around to our backstage area, complete with luxury loos! The set was an absolute banger, with everyone really on top form. We had songs from Xenios, Izzy, Georgia and Ruby with the ever present Sid on guitar and Jack Jones back behind the drum kit. After we played we stuck around and caught a few bands on the main stage before travelling back. It was a truly epic day and hopefully the first of many years of big festival summers for us! All the students we took to both festivals were absolutely immaculate in the way they represented themselves and MBA and it was such a pleasure to have that experience with them all.
Qube Records Back at base we have begun work on the follow up to the Distance album, with songwriting and recording sessions happening across the holiday. No release date just yet but we’re hoping to get it out before the new year so watch this space! Remember, if you are writing an original song or fancy getting involved, drop me a line or come and see me in the music block and we can get you up and running. Qube Records is for everyone so if you want to be a part of all this cool stuff, jump onboard! For more info, photos and of course music don’t forget to follow Qube Records on Instagram and Twitter, and visit www.quberecords.org Music Lessons The sign up forms for all our instrumental and vocal music lessons have gone out this week on parent mail and we have had a record number of students booking in! If you haven’t yet signed up and would like to, get the forms in via ParentMail as soon as possible. Teachers will be getting in touch with everyone who has signed up now and timetabling them, ready to start lessons next week. So, if you would like lessons on guitar, drums, piano, brass, strings, woodwind or voice get the forms in ASAP. You can also drop me an email on: droberts@mountsbay.org
BE CREATIVE BE CREATIVE Year 9 Fast Track Hospitality and Catering One of the tasks set for the Year 9 Hospitality and Catering class during remote learning, was to go out and pick blackberries and, if they had or knew someone with an apple tree, apples. This gave them the chance to experience cooking from extremely fresh produce as well as allowing them to begin familiarising themselves with catering equipment. For their first lesson they made a crumble or a pie. I was thrilled with their enthusiasm and I hope you got to enjoy it at home, preferably with either custard or cream. Students are going to do as much cooking as possible during their Year 9 fast track course, so that they will get the opportunity to develop their skills and techniques as much as possible. This will enable them to feel more confident when taking their Unit 2 practical exam at Easter. Please let me know if I can help your child in any way, and thank you for your support. BE COMPETITIVE Beach Rugby Champions On the August bank holiday weekend seven Year 11 students entered the two day beach tag rugby competition at Lusty Glaze beach in Newquay. Fifty six teams in total entered the competition from all over the South West. Most of the teams consisted mainly of adult players. On the first day we played five matches the outcome of which determined which competition we played in on the Sunday. We didn’t start well, narrowly losing the first game by 1 try. However, we responded well, winning the four remaining matches. On the Sunday we were placed in the second tier out of four. It was a tough group but we managed to win all of our games and top the group. The semi final was a really tense match but we progressed to the final which was played on a bigger pitch under floodlights and in front of 400 spectators! In the final we started very well going 3-0 up quickly and didn’t look back with our pace and skill allowing us to score lots more tries. The final score was 14-5! It was a brilliant weekend. We would recommend it to everyone. Hopefully we’ll see you there next year when we defend our title. Mounts Bay Pirates 2021 Bowl Champions! Report by: Oscar, Kaea, Jago, Dom(c),

Deadline for Bronze payment: 22nd October. Deadline for Silver payment: 10th October. As we are unable to run Parents Evenings or assemblies I would urge all parents / carers and interested students to watch the following YouTube promotional films and also the link to the DofE website which you can follow in order to find out which activities you can / can’t do in each section. @ BE INFORMED Late Bus Information I am pleased to inform all families that the late buses are running from Monday 20th September. This is an offer made by the Academy that any student who attends an after school activity (not a detention!) will be entitled to transport home without charge. However, students can only travel if they have booked a seat. There are five routes available and they leave around 4:10 Monday - Friday. Unfortunately we cannot carry students who just turn up without booking a seat, but if one route is overbooked, the team of drivers change their routes slightly in order to get everyone home - however I must emphasise that this is only the students who have booked seats. In order to book seats, students must sign into Edulink and go to the section marked ‘clubs’. They will then see the five available routes for each night and the need to sign up for that service - it is very similar to signing up for an activity, but please remember that signing up for an after school activity does not automatically get you a seat on the late bus. Students must chose a night and a route. The five routes are as follows: • Late bus to Crowlas and stops along the A30 to Hayle • Late bus to Newlyn, Sy Buryan and Sennen • Late bus to Goldsithney, Perranuthnoe, Rosudgeon, Ashton, Breage and Porthleven • Late bus to St Ives and Carbis Bay • Late bus to St Just and Pendeen Any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask. Could we take this opportunity to remind all students that the no entry signs around site are to stop students from entering areas that are currently undergoing refurbishment. Please DO NOT enter these areas of the site. Thank you.
