Inaugural Virtual Summit on LGBTQ+ Health Equity FREE two-day event open to healthcare providers of all disciplines, researchers, academics, advocates, and anyone who wishes to expand their understanding of the unique experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual (LGBTQ+) individuals and discuss issues affecting the health of this community. April 7 & 8, 2022 4 Dynamic Keynote Speakers 7 Breakout Sessions with 14 Different Workshop Options Diversity and Inclusion credits are available for MUSC attendees. Credit hours are determined by attendance at individual sessions. 12.75 total credit hours possible.

Johnson, PhD; Kenyon College & Ivy Hill; Campaign for Southern Equality In this session, presenters will share findings from the Campaign for Southern Equality’s Southern LGBTQ Health Survey, which will give attendees a snapshot of the healthcare experiences of LGBTQ individuals in the South and the barriers they often face accessing care. LGBTQ+ Primary Care Marty Player, MD & Amanda Jones, PA-C; Medical University of South Carolina This session will feature information about the primary healthcare needs of LGBTQ+ individuals and considerations when creating an LGBTQ-inclusive clinical practice. April 7, 2022 - 11:15 AM-12:15 PM The Impact of Identity: How it Affects Mental Health, What It Means to be Minoritized, and How We Can Help Chase T. M. Anderson, MD; University of California San Francisco This talk is about how different aspects of the identities of minoritized individuals affect their mental health. Through information about minority stress, intersectionality, statistics about mental health outcomes in minoritized individuals, and stories from residency training, we will examine not only the negative aspects that occur from discrimination but also, more importantly, how we can help such individuals heal. Understanding Gender and Sexuality Colt St. Amand, PhD, MD; Mayo Clinic, Rochester Moving beyond gender 101, Dr. Colt will take learners through the basics and build on even an advanced learner’s knowledge of what healthcare providers need to know about gender and sexuality when working with LGBTQ+ patients. Breakout Session Descriptions (cont’d) April 7, 2022 - 1:00-2:00 PM Supporting the Families of LGBTQ+ Youth Panel Discussion with Parents of LGBTQ Youth Moderated by Chandler Massengale, MSW; We Are Family Parents and other family members of LGBTQ+ youth face specific needs for resources and peer support as their youth explore their gender and sexual identities. This group of caring family members will describe their personal experiences and needs as their youth have grown and learned more about themselves. Transgender Medicine: Not All Pink and Blue, Call for All Hands on Deck Harsha Karanchi, MD; Medical University of South Carolina We will review the evaluation, management, and monitoring of adult transgender patients. In addition, we will discuss interpretation and counseling of risks associated with gender affirming hormone therapy. April 7, 2022 - 2:15-3:15 PM Catalyzing Inclusive and Equitable Sexual and Reproductive Care for Transgender and Gender Expansive People: Using Tools We Have to Expand the Care We Provide Juno Obedin-Maliver, MD; Stanford University Supporting Transgender and Gender Diverse Youth Jack Turban, MD; Stanford University This session will review the latest research regarding how to support the mental health of transgender and gender diverse youth. Attendees will learn about prepubertal gender exploration and social transition, pubertal suppression for adolescents, and gender-affirming hormones. They will also learn about the latest public policies impacting transgender and gender diverse youth and the relevant research regarding these policies.
Breakout Session Descriptions (cont’d) April 8, 2022 - 10:00-11:00 AM Breast Cancer Care Delays, Race, and Sexual Orientation: Findings from The Access Project Tonia Poteat, PhD; University of North Carolina Chapel Hill This presentation will review results from a community-engaged, mixed methods study that explored experiences of breast cancer care delays by race and sexual orientation. Qualitative data describe the particular experiences of Black sexual minority women with breast cancer. Quantitative data examine correlates of breast cancer care delays and participant endorsed reasons for delay. Gender Diversity: Pediatric Endocrinology Deborah Bowlby, MD; Medical University of South Carolina This session will discuss pediatric endocrinology management options for pediatric transgender patients, and delineate medical and community support. April 8, 2022 - 11:15 AM-12:15 PM Legal Landscape for the LGBTQIA Community Colleen Condon, Esq. & Lauren Edwards, Esq.; Condon Family Law Firm This session will provide a snapshot of the current South Carolina Family Court landscape for the LGBTQIA com- munity. We will address issues specific to our community, including name changes and gender confirmations, divorce, custody, and adoption as they relate to the LGBTQIA community and what we see on the horizon. First Do Harm? We Need to Talk about Intersex Pidgeon Pagonis This session will provide an overview of what intersex is (and what it’s not), how intersex people have been treated (read: pathologized) throughout time, and ways intersex people have been, and currently still are, fighting to put an end to the “care” which the United Nations has labeled “torture”. After the 30-minute slide presentation, Pagonis’ short film “A Normal Girl” will be screened and followed up with a Q&A.

Lopez, PhD; Medical University of South Carolina This session aims to provide the foundations for research with the LGBTQ+ population. Topics covered include the history and perspective of collecting sexual orientation and gender identity and creating population-inclusive protocols; the experiences of a diverse array of professionals; review of resources for incorporating LGBTQ+ individuals in future research endeavors; and open dialogue addressing the inclusion of LGBTQ+ concerns in research. Transgender Health: Forging a Path of Compassionate Care in the American South Shayne Sebold Taylor, MD; Vanderbilt University In this session, Dr. Taylor will discuss her journey as an ally physician serving the transgender community, Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s model for their Clinic for Transgender Health, and her role as Director of the clinic that provides care to transgender and gender diverse patients.
