DECEMBER 2020 IN THE LOOP Happy December everyone! In November we had a few wins with our re-start on some of our programs. The exercise classes and clubs were doing great with everyone using precautions. The flu clinic days were very successful and a welcome service to the many who attended. Sadly, this came to a halt with our new health orders. We hope that everyone is staying safe and healthy as we approach the Christmas Season. Our Meals to Go program is offering some special holiday meals for Christmas and New Years. Be sure to check it out on page 5 & 6. All of the staff and Board Members would like to wish you a very Merry Christmas and may 2021 bring us close to our old normal once again. Flu Clinic Merry Christmas SUCCESS! We were able to Everyone! provide flu vaccines for over 130 people! Thank-you to Save-on-Foods Pharmacy for Your support Langley Senior Resources Society 20605 51B Ave., Langley BC V3A 9H1 604-530-3020 LSRS.ca 1
Message to Members We continue to have the majority of our programs be on hold under the recent Provincial Health Officer’s restrictions for the Fraser Health Region. Currently these restrictions go until December 7, however we will not look to restart any fitness classes or clubs until January at the earliest. The Adult Day Program just reopened on November 16 with up to 15 clients per day and is going well so far. Discussions are continuing about gradually ramping up the numbers over time. For those who can’t make it into the program, the Day Program staff are continuing online and over the phone connecting with families and clients. Our Outreach department continues in full force offering support to isolated seniors and those seniors in need. Our phone lines are open and we are available to provide Information, referrals and assistance with meal delivery and grocery shopping. We have had three movies filmed at the Centre over the last two months and two more are planned for December. These film shoots will bring in a needed $120,000 in revenue to replace lost recreation, membership, catering and donation revenues. It will also help fund some building projects, including a $50,000 roof replacement, gutters replacement and construction of a retaining wall on the back patio. The October community shredding event was very successful and raised $4,000 for the Centre. We have planned an Xmas tree chipping fundraiser event for Saturday January 9, 2021 from 10 am to 2 pm. Please come by to dispose of your Christmas tree. Tree chipping is by donation. I wish everyone to keep safe during the holiday season, wear masks when appropriate, and let’s all look forward to a new year that sees our pandemic fade away. Sincerely, Paul Goldberg Merry Christmas to all! 2
BOARD CHAIR Message December 2020 We are all social creatures and at our core is our basic human need to connect with one another. The COVID-19 virus is smart and it may think it can prevent our ability to enjoy life and connect with one another - but it cannot! We seniors are stronger, smarter, more creative, more determined, and more resilient than this virus and we will continue to find ways to stay safe, and enjoy, connect and support each other - even though our lives have been turned upside down! I am inspired by the many wonderful stories I have heard from our members about how you are looking after yourselves, your friends and your families. You are an impressive membership and I want to thank you for your thoughtful and caring support of each other and our staff during this time. We have remained safe because of your cooperation! The Board of Directors and the staff miss seeing you in the Centre but we will continue to keep connected with you through phone calls, email, Zoom and our Newsletter. The best Christmas present all of us can give to ourselves, our friends and our families this year is to ensure we don’t infect each other! As we enter the holiday season let’s continue to reflect on our behaviour so we can all stay safe. Happy holidays! Loretta Solomon Chair, Board of Directors 3

MEALS TO GO PROGRAM Merry Christmas We want your Feedback! From the Kitchen Team Have you tried our meals to go? We have been pro- ducing meals to go from our café since April 2020, when the pandemic forced us to close our Centre and café. Monthly menus are posted on our website and Face- book page. Click here to see our newest Menus! We have received lots of excellent feedback from members of the Centre and individuals throughout our community about the quality and availability of the meals we produce. We offer specialty meals: We had a Holiday Thanksgiving dinner package, and are now offering a Christmas dinner package and New Years specialty meal. We’d like to know how we are doing, what you would want to see that’s different, or simply compliment us by email or on Facebook about our service and quality. Thank you for buying our meals and supporting the Langley Seniors Centre! 6
Join our Executive Director, Paul Goldberg and our Board Chair, Loretta Solomon for a zoom visit! This is your opportunity to ask questions, share comments & suggestions, or just come for a chat. You will need to zoom into the meeting via your computer! Send your email request to Board@lsrs.ca and we will send you the date & time and meeting links. Keeping you In the Loop What’s happening inside the Centre you ask? You will see a great deal of activity happening on the site in the very near future. This work is a result of the revenue the Centre has received from filming! New gutters will be installed around the entire building on November 25th and 26th. In mid to late Decem- ber, our new roof is expected to be completed (weather permitting). Also during this time (December 21) a new 139 foot retaining wall in the back patio area will be completed (also weather permitting). In addition, a large amount of soil will be brought in and spread in the back patio garden area. Pruners and landscapers have been busy in readiness for the next phase of the work to be done. We hope to have a beautiful area ready for members to renew friendships and visit one another in the Spring! Inside the building, repairs have been done to areas of the stage and Main Hall! Things are looking great! Watch for the big white trucks from the film crew to be filling the parking lot! Lots of December filming to come! 2021 Membership Update Great news! If you have purchased your 2020 Membership with us, we have extended the expiry date to December 31, 2021. If you need a membership for 2021, please call the front desk at 604-530-3020 to register over the phone. 7
Staying Connected Janice McTaggart Since I retired in March (just before pandemic restrictions) I have been busy and fulfilled by other work in the community. I am now on the executive team for Langley Seniors in Action, a member of 4 teams at my church, and I adopted a wee kitten who has brightened up my life enormously. The team I am most excited about at my church is Social Justice. (You can subscribe to our YouTube channel “Social Justice Langley” or on our website www.ucol.ca to see what we are up to. Both challenging and rewarding work. Two visits to visit my grandkids in New Brunswick have now had to be cancelled. I keep in touch daily with Eva, almost 4, and Marley, almost 2, on Facetime. What a gift this technology is. We had a virtual tea party the other day and played frozen tag on another occasion. I am enjoying “snail mail” too and send something at least monthly. I have been writing stories for them which include photos from their activities. The most recent “The Roy Sisters Go To Shediak”. You’ve Got a Telephone Trees for Support Friend in Me “Telephone Trees are networks of people organized in We want to take a moment to a way to promote the sharing of information amongst recognize one of our long-standing each other” members, Barb Vollet. Thank you to Barb Keep those telephone trees going, pass on and everyone else who has been reaching out to those who Information, pass on a greeting & pass on a virtual hug need someone to talk to. We appreciate all you do. to those who need it. The Friendship Garden We have long envisioned the back patio area as a serene and relaxing environment to have a coffee and connect with friends and fellow members. We have heard you and the Langley Seniors Centre recogniz- es your need for an outdoor space to connect with one another and when Spring arrives you will have that space - the “Friendship Garden”. Landscapers have done significant pruning and weeding of the area. The pergola has been rebuilt and the brick patio has been redone. On Dec 21 a beautiful 130 foot wall is being built and will wind its way along the pathway at the lower part of the garden. It will be constructed so that members can sit down on it if they want to just enjoy the quiet space. 15 yards of soil will be spread immediately after the retaining wall is completed, raising the flower beds to be visible from the patio and making it easier for the gardeners to work in. Improvements will be made to the patio seating areas and a tent is planned to ensure members are comfortable while connecting with friends. Think about what additional elements could be incorporated as part of a Friendship Garden - water fountain, wind chimes, a butterfly garden, scented flowers - and let us know how you envision your Friendship Garden. It belongs to you. 8
