A History of Racism 1 There is a long history of discrimination1 and violence2 against black Americans. Some people think that racism3 is in the past. Unfortunately, the reality is different. Black people and other minority groups 4 are still not treated equally5. Because of their skin color, black people face many 5 challenges6 in school, work, healthcare, and the justice system7. In fact, their lives are in danger. On May 25, a black man named George Floyd was killed by a white police officer. It was caught on video, which was seen around the world. People of all ages and backgrounds8 marched9 in the streets to express10 their anger 10 and sadness. They demanded justice11 for George and many other black men and women. People everywhere are saying, “enough is enough 12!” Standing Together Against Racism 13 | Impress 3 by Rachel Beilsmith
Vocabulary Summary A Worldwide Movement 12 George Floyd’s story sparked anger13 around the world, and that anger sparked action. There have been protest14 marches in over 4,000 cities worldwide, including in the U.K., Brazil, Australia, Korea, and Japan. People of 15 all ages and skin colors are speaking out15 against racism16, discrimination1, and police violence17. The protests aim to spread awareness18 of systemic19 racism3 against black people. The key message is “Black Lives Matter”, and that all people should be treated equally5, no matter20 the color of their skin. Racism3 is not only an American problem. These problems exist 21 in every 20 country. People are coming together22 to protect23 each other and make the world a better and safer place for everyone. Coronavirus Vocabulary Remember! People are all connected in a social web. If we get sick, we can get many other people sick, too. This creates a cluster of sick people and can start a pandemic. Many people don’t have any symptoms19 of sickness. And it can take up to two weeks for them to appear. When we practice social distancing26, we help other people be safe. Stay Safe! Changing Lives As a student, English was my favorite subject. I don’t remember exactly why but I think it was because analyzing words and sentences was easier for me than studying numbers or remembering dates. Back then, I would have never imagined that I would be an English teacher. I came to Japan eight years ago. I chose the Gunma area because I prefer to be close to nature. Not to mention, most of the people I know in Japan live in the same area. “Millions of people At first, I had a different line of work in mind.
