IKEA Launches INDUSTRIELL with Dutch Designer Piet Hein Eek A Collection that Celebrates Unique Products on a Big Scale April 2018
Human Feel in Large Scale Production (Hong Kong • 10 April 2018) Following collaborations with renowned designers HAY and Tom Dixon, IKEA has partnered with Dutch designer Piet Hein Eek to turn mass-produced uniformity on its head and create the new beautifully imperfect collection – INDUSTRIELL, which features a range of furniture, tableware, and lighting, enabling public to own good design with a human quality at an affordable price. INDUSTRIELL is set to launch on 13 April in Hong Kong. “It turned out that IKEA and I had thought about the same thing for ages,” Piet says. “To make objects feel more human and more personal while still having an industrial production process.” Piet Hein Eek said. Upholding the concept of respecting materials, IKEA and Piet Hein Eek rethought the ways to work with wood, glass, ceramics and textiles which added personal touch to each product even they are mass-produced, making each product a unique piece. The Sustainable INDUSTRIELL Led by Materials When working with various natural materials, IKEA and Piet Hein Eek tried to keep the original condition of the materials and throw away as little as possible. During the production process, however, the team encountered one of the biggest challenges. When producing INDUSTRIELL, the factory and the team had opposite focus and needs. The factory focuses on shaping white unblemished pine furniture perfectly, while the team strives to maximise the use of each tree to protect the environment as much as possible. IKEA strives to take better care of the environment. IKEA always sources wood with very strict standards in order to minimize the harmful impact to the environment. By 2020, all the wood IKEA sources will be from more sustainable sources – the wood will either be recycled wood or Forest Stewardship Council* (FSC) certified. *Forest Stewardship Council is an independent, non-profit organization that sets standards under which forests and companies are certified, so as to ensure that products come from responsibly managed forests that provide environmental, social and economic benefits. INDUSTRIELL Shelving unit $899
THE NATURAL IMPERFECTIONS PH150039 OF PINE When creating the chair from pine, they kept all the knots and changes in the grain and colour of the pine that form the natural imperfections. Ultimately, each chair looked slightly different from each other and became a unique handcrafted item of furniture. INDUSTRIELL Chair $990
DRAWN BY HAND, WOVEN BY MACHINE INDUSTRIELL tea towels are the clearest example of the “hand made, mass produced” theme of the collection. Piet hand-drew the pattern of the tea towels, so that they would be less than perfectly geometrical. But how can tea towels look like a handmade textile when sewn by machine? “The checks give the impression that someone with an inferior handloom has really done their best to weave a lovely design. The pattern looks very handmade but is actually produced in large quantities on a superior weaving machine.” Piet said. INDUSTRIELL Tea towel $59.9/2 pcs
INDUSTRIELL Glass $7.9 MISMATCHED GLASSES Glass production uses large-scale machines to ensure standardised flawless quality. After rounds of trial and error, the INDUSTRIELL glass was eventually made from a hand-drawn sketch. The sketch was converted into a digital drawing and produced on two different machines, which creates an interesting little mismatch when you combine them.
RETHINK CERAMICS VASES INDUSTRIELL vases were produced with different shapes of molds, making each of them looks slightly different from another. INDUSTRIELL Vase $199.9
