Assessment Assessors Part One: Equitation Date Pass Comments 1. Mount and Dismounting and Preparation for Riding Lead the horse out correctly from the bridle Check girth and stirrups before mounting. Mount correctly from either a leg up or a mounting block. Dismount correctly and safely. Demonstrate how to run up stirrups and loosen girth once dismounted. Demonstrate shortening and lengthening the reins. 2. Riding Demonstrate use of the correct Aids to make transitions to walk, trot and halt Maintain good position and correct balance in walk and both rising and sitting trot. Demonstrate turning left and right showing good coordination throughout. 3. Understand the Highway Code Explain the importance of High Visibility Clothing when riding on the road Describe how to recognize potential hazards on the road Demonstrate how to ride turns including appropriate observation and signalling whilst maintaining position and control of pony Demonstrate signalling, Stop, Slow Down and Thank you whilst maintaining position and control of pony.

Assessment Assessors Part 2: Theory and Practical Date Pass Comments 1.Grooming: Explain the reasons for Grooming and regularly picking out feet Describe when to groom and how to care for the horse after exercise Correctly Identify and explain the function of • Dandy Brush • Water Brush • Body Brush • Metal, rubber and plastic Curry Combs Grooming Equipment • Mane comb Theory • Sponges • Hoof Pick Describe practical and safe clothing to wear on the yard and when handling horses Approach the horse or pony and put on a head collar. Show how to lead him and tie him up safely using a quick release knot. Demonstrate correct grooming Grooming Equipment procedure including the correct use of Practical bushes in the appropriate sequence. Part One: Equitation Assessment Assessors Pass Date Comments 1. Riding Check and adjust Girth and Stirrups before and after mounting. Ride the horse in walk trot and canter showing a correct and balanced position in all 3 paces Show correct aids for transitions to and from halt, walk, trot, canter Ride changes of rein through trot and demonstrate correct use of trotting diagonals throughout. Explain using the correct trotting diagonal is important. Show canter on both reins with the correct canter lead Describe the aids for canter and how to recognise that the horse is on the correct canter lead. Explain the importance of the correct canter lead. Work over ground poles in walk and trot showing good balance in a light seat throughout. Ride correct turns and lines to poles Explain how the horses behaviour may change during ridden work outside the arena Describe best practice when riding in a group on the road.

The Grass Kept Horse and Pasture Management Explain how pasture might need to be managed differently in different seasons List poisonous plants List the daily checks that should be made on a field grazed by horses Theory List the features of a field suitable for grazing horses with reference to water supply, shelter, drainage, soil type and acreage Explain the importance of turnout to the horses physical and mental wellbeing
Describe behaviour you might expect to see from a group of horses at grass List the features you might expect to see in a horse sick field Show how you would safely bring in and turn Practical out a horse to and from the field. Assessment Assessors Part 2: Theory and Practical Date Pass Comments 3. Colours, Markings and Points of the Horse Point to the key points of the horse including points of the foot Describe the colours of a variety of horses List and describe forms of face Markings List and define Leg Markings Describe the features of a whorl, a wall eye and an ermine mark 4. Indications of Horses in Good Health List the vital signs of a horse which you would use to monitor good health. Include TPR Why is it important to know the normal behaviour of the horse in the stable? Show how you would hold the horse up for inspection Explain any changes in these Vital signs which would indicate a horse was unwell or off colour Describe the natural lifestyle of the horse as opposed to horses which are stabled or have their turnout, grazing and feed managed. 5. Feeding, Watering and Daily Routine
Explain the importance of Routine to the horses physical and mental well being Describe the Daily Routine at Horse Rangers Why is water important in the horses Diet Recognize some examples of a variety of feedstuffs including pasture mix, chaff, oats, Pony nuts, Alfa A, Sugar beet Assessment Assessors Part 2: Theory and Practical Date Pass Comments 6. Shoeing Explain what constitutes good hoof care and why this is so important List the signs which would show a horse needed shoeing List the points to look for in a newly shod foot 7. Tack and Protective Boots Fit a variety of boots including tendon, fetlock, brushing and over reach boots. Describe the purpose of these boots Practical Describe how you might use different saddles for different disciplines. Put on a variety of bridles to include those with martingales, breastplates, a flash nose band and a drop noseband. 8. Haynets
Fill and tie and Hay net at the appropriate height using a quick release knot. Practical Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using a hay net 9. Fire Describe the fire Precautions in place around the yard at HRA Describe the Fire Evacuation Plan 10. Part One: Equitation Assessment Assessors Pass Date Comments 1. Riding Before mounting check the condition and fit of the tack. Show a correct and balanced position in all 3 paces, with the horse maintaining good rhythm and balance throughout Rider shows the ability to ride the horse forwards. Show the ability to work in harmony with the horse . Demonstrate 20 metre circles using the correct aids and ride 20 m circles in all 3 paces Explain the School Rules and work as part of a group in open order. Show work using indirect transitions Halt, walk and Trot Rider to work without stirrups in walk, trot and canter, and to maintain good independent balance throughout Ride an accurate 3 loop serpentine keeping and even speed and rhythm with equal loops.
Jump a small fence of 2 ft. • Show good rhythm and impulsion to the canter. • Show a balanced turn and straight approach to the fence. • Fold with good and secure balance over the fence. • Show a straight get away. Grooming and Clipping Explain the difference between a full groom, strapping, quartering and brushing off Explain how to care for a hot sweaty horse after exercise Give the Reasons for clipping and explain when you wouldn’t clip a horse Describe the different styles of clip and what purposes they serve Describe how to maintain clipping equipment 2. Mucking out Talk about the advantage and disadvantages of Theory dip littering Describe a variety of bedding materials and their advantages and disadvantages including straw, shavings, rubber matting, paper and pellets 3. Shoeing Identify the following shoes. Plain Stamped, hunter, feather edged, grass tips, egg bar, heart bar, wedges, natural balance, aluminium and pads. Explain their uses Describe the function of studs 4. Lameness and Wounds
Describe how you would identify the following wounds: Galls, bruises, Lacerations, Incisions and puncture wounds List some possible caused for the above wounds and describe how you would treat them. Describe how and when you would cold hose List the signs that would indicate a horse was lame Explain how you would go about identifying an obvious cause – e.g. a foot abscess Explain how you would decide on an appropriate course of action to deal with lameness including when to call the vet. 7.
