MIFA Celebrates Volunteers In April, MIFA staff celebrated the many volunteers whose support helps 10+ years our programs serve the neighbors who need us most. For three days during CONGREGATE MEALS National Volunteer Week, the Meals on Wheels team led celebrations in the Eddie Blackwell parking lot with music and cheers and distributed gift bags to meal delivery Tracie Crockett volunteers. Our other programs recognized volunteers with thank-you cards, Gwendolyn Calhoun videos, and Zoom calls. Emma Debose Doris Logan We are especially grateful to the volunteers who have served for years or even decades. We have attempted to recognize all our longtime volunteers in the Ophelia Malone listing below; however, our records may be incomplete, especially for volun- Mary Marise teers who serve as part of a group or congregation. Vaccine Accessibility for MIFA Meals on Wheels Clients As the COVID vaccine became more widely available in early 2021, MIFA and other local partners began to look for ways to get the vaccine to our senior neighbors, especially those for whom leaving home is difficult or impossible. We sent a survey to 1,100 home-delivered meal recipients; of the 400 who responded, about 25% had already received the vaccine, but half said they needed help getting to a vaccination site or could not leave their homes at all. That’s where Meritan came in. They had already begun a successful campaign to vaccinate homebound residents of Shelby, Fayette, Tipton, and Lauderdale counties at no cost to the recipients (although health insurance can cover some administration fees). They graciously—and without hesitation—agreed to provide vaccines to our clients in their homes as well. We began referring clients in late March and have since connected 54 clients to Meritan for in-home shots. We are so grateful to Meritan and its Executive Director Melanie Keller for their dedication to helping our senior neighbors access the vaccine. To learn more about Meritan and their vaccine program, visit meritan.org. Jennifer Mohundro, RN, leaving the Meritan office with the travel fridge used to transport the vaccines. 8 Spring 2021 mifa.org • (901) 527-0208 OUR VISION: Uniting the community through service.
