In 1988, Pope St. John Paul II Regina sine labe originali concepta established the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter Queen conceived without original sin (Fraternitas Sacerdotalis Sancti Petri) as a Clerical Society of Apostolic Life of Pontifical Right, and approved its constitutions. The Fraternity was founded in response to the Holy Father’s call to ecclesial unity and the new evangelization, hence the name denotes a filial love and loyalty to the Supreme Pontiff. The primary patron of the Fraternity from its inception was Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, then Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, who later became Pope Benedict XVI. o n a
A Pastor’s Note by Father Geddes “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us. Whom when He saw, He said: Go, show yourselves to the priests. And it came to pass, as they went, they were made clean.” Luke 17:14 Pope Pius XI, in Casti Conubii says: “Let it be repeated as an immutable and inviolable fundamental doctrine that matrimony was not instituted or restored by man but by God; not by man were the laws made to strengthen and confirm and elevate it but by God, the Author of nature, and by Christ Our Lord by Whom nature was redeemed, and hence these laws cannot be subject to any human decrees or to any contrary pact even of the spouses themselves. He explains that the free will of the man and woman enter into matrimony in that they chose someone and they choose to hand over and accept the rights proper to the state of marriage to that person. By virtue of this act, they have now made a solemn vow to God. He says, “This freedom, however, regards only the question whether the contracting parties really wish to enter upon matrimony or to marry this particular person; but the nature of matrimony is entirely independent of the free will of man, so that if one has once contracted matrimony he is thereby subject to its divinely made laws and its essential properties. He will sum it all up now when he says, “Therefore the sacred partnership of true marriage is constituted both by the will of God and the will of man. From God comes the very institution of marriage, the ends for which it was instituted, the laws that govern it, the blessings that flow from it.” The teachings of the Church regarding marriage have to be strictly practiced by the couple who place themselves under the laws of matrimony which is protected by the Church. By virtue of exchanging the vows on their wedding day, the couple have bound their wills and are no longer free to use marriage beyond which the Church has set down in stone. “And whosoever shall fall on this stone, shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it shall grind him to powder,” Matthew 21:44 It is for this reason that the Church expresses very clearly what parameters husband and wife are to abide by when it regards conjugal relations. This is what the Holy Father is referring to when he says, “hence these laws cannot be subject to any human decrees or to any contrary pact even of the spouses themselves”. Husband and wife have to learn what these parameters are and cannot choose to act outside of these parameters, even if mutually agreed upon. To do so, in most cases, will be an abomination calling down the wrath of God and will eventually disfigure the sacred union. The primary and most essential parameter that every human person must abide by is the unitive can never be separated from the procreative. Outside the confines of matrimony, the most common sin divorced from the unitive and procreative is called a solitary sin. This is always mortal even when it does not reach completion. What are some of these parameters regarding marital intimacy for husband and wife? Husband and wife cannot will to separate the unitive (physical union of husband and wife) from the procreative end in martial intimacy no matter the age of the persons or whether one is barren. The unitive and procreative always have to be one singular act. Husband and wife cannot be physical with one another in a manner which sparks those passions connected with intimacy in one or both spouse for the sake of it alone - it must be proximate to marital intimacy. Nor can one intentionally think of one’s spouse in a manner which causes the same result otherwise mortal sin is committed. Husband and wife cannot begin with the unitive and then choose to not fully follow through with the procreative - this is the mortal sin Onan fell into (Genesis 38:8) and God struck him dead. Husband and wife cannot deny their spouse marital intimacy (when reasonably asked) without a serious reason otherwise it would be a mortal sin. This particular matter touches upon the vow that man and wife solemnly made to God. I explain to couples that whatever would excuse you from coming to Mass on Sundays would be a sufficient reason to deny your spouse - migraine, just gave birth, sick etc. If you have questions about this, please talk to one of the Fathers. I will continue discussing the dignity and sacredness of matrimony next week.
